View Full Version : FW 190 frontward view solution?

I like to fly the FW190, but like others did not like the frontward view. I had read somewere that a fighter ace had used a piece of gum for his gunsite. This got me thinking about the FW190 with the limited view you have and what can be done to over come it.

I liked flying the FW190 with the gunsite turned off to see better ahead, so I thought about using a clear piece of tape over my gun site and marking it with a cross hair, inverted V, dot, or whatever I thought would work for a gunsite. Then I turned off the gunsite, this opens up the frontward view a lot and you have a gunsite to go by. Don't laugh, because it works quit well. I have shot down several planes like this.

Personally, I havenāĀ“t "gotten into" the Fw190 yet, but the idea sounds pretty good.

The problem with this is that the gunsight line is very low, hence though the view is better you still have rather limited lead before the target disappears under the nose.
If the partially visible reticule in this default view was at the same vertical position as the reticule (relative to the sight glass) in the 'sight on' view I'm sure your solution would be used by a lot of 190 jockies.

Sight problem? What sight problem?

The 190A5 is pretty much all I fly (just cuz I like it)...

You get used to it very quickly.

I agree that the lead is pretty short, but you get a feel for the rate of change between you and the other ac, and you don't have to see it to know you hit it.. Its like several of the car racing tracks I run. On some corners you have to begin the turn before you can even see the corner.. Just takes practice.
Often I take a shot when the enemy goes below my sight line, and I just bob the nose down after the shot to see if I got a hit..

The FW 190 gunsight is fudged, I know this because I've sat in a 190 cockpit but it seems egos are more important than the truth so I learned to deal with it.

The best way to get fighters with FW-190 in FB is to swoop down and lead them. This will put them out view because your instruments will be in the way. Once you learn how to do this, the only way for enemy to survive is to jink at the last momement. If they stay on course they will have to deal with a hail ol 20mm.

With straight flying aircraft like bombers the gunsight works great. Straight flying fighters are good too, but its hard to find a AI fighter that doesnt have eyes in the back of his head.

I wasn't talking about the gunsite itself being limited.

I was talking about the frontward field of view being obstructed by the wide canopy posts. When you turn off the gunsite, it is like it pushes the seat back and you have a wider field of vision dead ahead. I use a make shift gunsite and it works for me. But like all things use at your own risk or don't use it at all. LOL /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

The Fw190 has such a fast roll rate. Just roll inverted when a target goes below you.

I like doing what buzz suggested, but i also come up from below my targets alot-That way if its a bomber those crazy AI snipers cant get you.

And morsmotirs, the Cockpit is correct. I've sat in a cockpit, and its fine. Ofcourse, it cant be moddled perfectly, because everyone is a different hight, and therefore will see through it differntly, but Oleg has the schematics and pictures, and its modeled correctly. Besides, its been beaten to death, and although i'd love for it to be changed, Oleg says he has no plan of it. Oh well.
