What is it about this plane that causes such a riot over? This is the only plane on the forums where I see great praise for it or people trying to discredit it as much as possible. Heck, I see multi page threads just joking about it, or about why they don't like it, or on how to better fly the plane.

So, what is the appeal or displeasures that constantly bring this plane up more than any other plane we've talked about on the forum?

Probably because its American, its iconic, its driven by a British engine, and its the plane that is most credited with "winning the war" as funny as that particular phrase is. History Channel loves the P-51 Mustang. I guess something can also be said for how many of them are on the WWII warbird airshow circuit as well.

In the game its a mix between those who love and those who hate and those who love it but hate it at the same time. Its probably the most controversial aircraft next to the Spitfire and the 109.

Part of that has to do with the numbers still flying as opposed to other WWII a/c still flying. But basically what you said.

As I understand it...that has alot to do with how many were built during the war, how many were kept in storage after the war, and the numbers that were privately bought or built from scratch years later. It was also a fairly cheap fighter to build compared to the more complicated P-47 and P-38.

An absolutely outstanding aircraft which truly did destroy the Luftwaffe by ranging all over Europe shooting German aircraft on their bases and disrupting training of new aircrew. It takes nothing from its luster to note than the AAF credited the P-47 with breaking the German fighter arm during the winter of 1944 when the P-51 was coming into widespread use, but was not yet dominant. Love 'em both.

It was a strategic masterpiece. People that complain about it here or don't think it was a really good "fighter" fail to consider it from the big picture point of view. The fact that it gave the Allies the ability to impose fighter cover over most of Germany from bases in England is far more important than whether or not it was the best figher in a tactical sense. You don't need to destroy enemy fighters attacking bombers to disrupt their plans and drastically lower bomber losses. Just the fact that the Germans had to worry about fighters attacking them made the P-51 an worthwhile plane. Just diving down on the German planes and scaring them off was good enough. If the German fighters were busy dodging Mustangs they couldn't attack the bombers whether or not they were shot down. The other advantage of the huge range of the 51 was that the Germans were no longer safe at their bases. You don't need a fancy nimble fighter to shoot up planes on the ground just something that can reach the target.

Its the plane which is most misunderstood.

Maybe you could have added this point in one of the 2 other P51 threads? Now we have 3.

Maybe because NA - Europe user numbers on this forum are about even.

Although that Americans tend to say the P51 was the best fighter plane ever produced whereas few Brits/Germans rarely say the same thing about the Spitfire/109.

In the end,it is just the masses of stupid people that make legends.

Go ahead and make a poll on why did the Pearl Harbour attack eventualy stop. You`d be amazed how many ppl say it was Ben Affleck`s P40.

You'd really like to believe it's that simple, wouldn't you? In the end, you're simply not intelligent enough to think deeper into the matter.

It must've been Josh Hartnett's plane then. I always knew he was a better pilot then Ben Affleck.
