I'm not sure whether burning oil would be good in a U-Boat simulation. There's the morality of it to consider. Real people with husbands, wives, parents, children, grandparents etc. (who love them very much) might fall in and get burned to death slowly. I think it would be morally wrong for us to be able to look at simulated burning oil and imagine people dying horribly in it, so it shouldn't be in the game. I worry about the fragility of our minds and whether we should to be allowed to see burning oil - we might just stare at it, gleefully drooling at the possibilities for untold human carnage and misery.

Just kidding. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

"There's the morality of it to consider"

Alert!!!! PC Police!!!!!!

why are you going to buy this sim??? really??? your good moral conscience should tell you it is wrong to sink ships, becasue you could imagine people drowning, or being burned to death in a compartment.....

so are you going to just sail around avoiding ships??? tell me please.....

I think Burning oil is another HISTORICALY ACURATE thing that would add to the sim....
especially if we stricken a ship with a Torp, but didnt witness it due to Depth Charge attack, then surface hours later to see it still burning on the surface....ala Das Boot

Throw a few dead bodies into the flames too. Watch them burn. Smoke a cig. Drink some schnapps.

Talking seriously.........

Burning and non burning oil slicks are accurate, plus big vertical smoke columns becoming horizontal when they arrive to a thermal layer in the air mass.........

All we are accustom to see it in SH2 thanks to vickers mod..........

I think so sinking behavior, and colateral effects must to be modeled well, if not the people will sense some thing is missing.........

I think i worded my topic wrong,it was a teribble way to perish in this typ of inferno but what i meant is that in SH2 with the vicks mode it did look realistic....and as some of you said it happend...i realy think they should go with Burning Oil...not all boats but some ie the Tankers..One more thing iv got the greatest Admaration for all who fought in the war..SEA..AIR..And Ground they were brave people.
But can we have Burning Oil?

Burning Oil would be okay for me. There are no people on board of SH3-merchant-ships anyway (or lifeboats). I have only seen crewmen on board of destroyers.

Sorry. It was a little joke at the expense of the Lifeboats poll thread.

I want burning oil! while on patrol on the north atlantic, near Iceland, I will sunk a tanker and then stop the sub behind the burning oil.
This way, I am going to avoid freezing my hands while on watch duty!!!!!!! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It creates a bright light on the horizon at night! Could look cool!

Another interesting feature with burning oil is that, when a tanker is hit, other ships in convoy have to make large turns to avoid the flames.

From all the SH-3 movies that I have seen so far it seems that smoke, in general, in underdone. What I mean is take a look at when a torpedo hits a ship in the game. Great effects! But......there is very little smoke after the blast. If there is smoke then it dissapates very quickly in the game. Now if they did this because smoke is a framerate killer then fine. If not then it needs work.

Smoke dissipates pretty quickly in real life too (depending on the strength of the wind). The smoke in the game looks pretty good to me - smoke from funnels is overdone if anything. As for burning ships, I don't see a problem with it, and smoke always plays havoc with frame rates, so I think it's best to be conservative.
