Gib, did you know that the J model P-38 explodes the way the P-30 used to in a high speed dive? Circa 810-850 kph.
Please test; I think this may be in error.
Thanks.

I always loose a wing at 810 before I can dive any faster.

That's why the P-38L has dive brakes. You're not supposed to go that fast. Lots of planes break up at that speed.

Hey Le Chuck, thx for the editing tip, I'll remember that. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
back to the topic: it's 810 KILOMETERS per hour, I'm thinking that's about 500 MILES per hour, and that <<sounds>> a little too slow for a plane like the P-38 to come apart.
And Buzz (I know you aleady know this) J model doesn't have the brakes http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif
If that's whta it really was, sobeit. There's alot of planes in FB that weren't built as tough as the 38, that hold up better, IIRC.

If any of you can find me proof that the structure would survive past 810KPH, that would go a lot better with Oleg then "I think".... I know Oleg very well, and if we can find proof, it will be changed by the next patch. I myself never noticed this. Does it happen on the L?

I'm not sure Gib, I usually fly the J because...................the L is so damn deadly I feel like I'm cheating. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I'll bet the Chimpster has some references for a (VnE?) ("speed fall down go boom")

Not proof, but after only a few minutes of searching. This from Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_P-38

"Late production P-38Js also finally overcame the compressibility problem, through the introduction of minor aerodynamic changes, most particularly the addition of a set of small dive flaps just outboard of the engines, on the bottom centerline of the wings. With these improvements, a USAAF pilot dived one to a terminal velocity of almost 970 km/h (600 mi/h) and recovered in one piece".

Maybe if a couple of Lightning buffs wanna invest some well spent time for more sources, you can get with Oleg. What kinds of sources do you feel would be the most compelling?
