Looking through my extensive aircraft library (while sitting on the loo of course), I have been struck by the number of aircraft which have in some versions sported propeller sleeves at the lower end of the blades near the spinner/hub. I can't think of any aerodynamic reason for this. Could the purpose be to catch oil from the hub to stop it spraying the windscreen? Anyone know? Just curious.

Are you refering to the Hub? That is what the prop blades rotate in in VP props..

Hope you had a good sit down lol

I think the proper term is 'cuffs'. I believe that they were used to assist in cooling the radial engines, or simply make the tapered portions of the prop blade more efficient (as in the P-51). I've noted that as the physics of the propellor became better understood, that base portion of the prop blade has become wider and more 'bladelike'.

cheers
