Well its canned at the end of Season 10 AND we're probably getting a miniseries or TV movie to wrap things up after that. So its not all bad. And its been 10 seasons...couldn't ask for more. AND SG Atlantis is getting better and better.

10 seasons was a good run, I always thought it would be best to let it go and let SG Atlantis take over, too much of SG-1 series could have driven it to the ground. It would be nice to get a movie that finishes off the Ori invasion.

The good news is the maker of the Original film staring Kurt Russell had scripted it as a 3 part trilogy in the way StarWars is, and now wants to bring the final 2 movies to the big screen http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I kinda lost interest in the franchise when Til'k started growing hair and stuff and jack resigned. As for Atlantis, never got it, it just didn't have the same sense of humour.

I'm out of it for a few days putting my hard drive back together (thanks to Saitek's SST uninstall eating some unnamed yet vital Windows driver while it did its thing) and this is what happens!?!

I'm still catching up with the past seasons with Netflix's help (halfway through season 7 now.) Do you think Ben Browder is going to start getting a complex as a sci-fi series killer? (kidding... I like him in SG-1.) I too hope they do something to wrap things up, either via a miniseries (a la Farscape, a series I never got into) or through Atlantis.

I preferred Don Davis to Beau Bridges, and Richard Dean Anderson to Ben Browder (though Richard's getting a little long in the tooth for the action lead role, judging from his recent guest shots), but the cast was still very entertaining. Bummer to hear the plug's getting pulled, but I thank them for ten great seasons (an eternity in "TV years".)

wow that sux. im a huge stargate fan but i dont hang in the fansites ect so this is freash news for me. seems horribly stupid for them to just leave it as is. a couple of epies to actualy end the storyline would have been nice. why the heck was it droped like that? i thought the current story was good what with the ori and lots of tie ins with SG-atlantis. i droped by the sci-fi stargate offical forum but after the response one poor sob got im noty going top waist time posting in there. there were like 10 post flaming the guy for asking when just awnsering his qwustion would have been far easier lol. any way i find it hard to beleave that SG-sg1 was so unwatched as to leading to a canning. yet we get such cool shows as "Eurika its another tremors" "Dr who-cares" and "ghost hunters who never catch any ghost" http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif and lets not forget those O so kool sci-fi TV-movies such as drogon fighter http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif. guys at sci-fi need to pull there heads outa there ......black holes.youd think after 10 frick'n seasons thay would at least get a 2 part final epie to wrap things up. this has just fubar'ed my whole night.

fordfan...they get till the end of the season to wrap things up somewhat. And SciFi hasn't pulled the plug completely. A miniseries or movie or something is still likely to occur. Apparently they are doing a great job by running the two shows and keeping the costs down by sharing between the two on resources (staff, some props, soundstages, etc.).

So it hasn't been canned midseason...they have not really cancelled at all. They have decided not to pick it up for another season. I love Stargate but I think 10 seasons is enough. And Atlantis is on...I like it just as much. I think it has a different flavour and I think its going to be great.

Is it actually canned? I heard around five months back that Sci-Fi channel weren't going to have S11, but the producers were still going to look for a new host.Apparently the ratings were huge, not small, so I was confused by Sci-Fi's decision.

But I suspected SG-1 was on the way out anyway: there was a new movie announced way back before Sci-Fi channel canned it that was going to "tie everything up over the last ten seasons" and launch a new series, so my guess was that they would show a counter-invasion of the Ori Galaxy and have Stargate Origin or something, then phase out SG-1.

I thought they should have ended it at 8, because that meant they didn't have to throw in a Jack replacement, and all the enemies were dealt with, so they could have switched to Atlantis with Tapping and Shanks and whoever else wanted to go, and just say that the SGC was winding down at the time because there wasn't much need for 22 teams just to explore and the Pegasus Galaxy warranted their full attention. Heck, it's even part of the storyline in S9.

I don't think it ever jumped the shark, I thought it was good from S1 through about 3, my favorites were the later seasons, after Apophis. I think the seasons with the replicators and Goa'uld, and especially Season 7 and 8, were pure gold. Nine I liked, but the sharp jump from Replicators, Jack and Goa'uld to Mitchell, Landry, Lam, and Ori really felt a little disjointed, it was just too much at once, and the writers were a little too set on making Mitchell into O'Neill: as his own character, good. As a Jack stand in? Sucked: Jack's gone, let it go, mates, let it go! I'm ranting so I'll summarise: S9 and S10 were good IMHO, not great, but they had a lot to live up to. I am happy to see it end on a high note if they tie it up nicely and avoid making 9 and 10 feel like desperate post scripts and attempts to milk it for all it's worth. Usually I think series should end after a few seasons, five maximum, but Stargate has been the exception, for me, but if 9 and 10 look like a postscript to a great series when it's all finished, I'll be a bit saddened.

I live in Australia, so I'm not sure - I thought S10 didn't start until this month in the USA? Do me a favour and if possible don't spoil when you answer, please; I only really had no idea what could happen in the last episodes of S8, having caught bits and pieces of the previous series without watching it, so I was keen to not have S9 and 10 spoiled.

i must be in the minority. i loved J.O but i thought bringing in Mitchell as well as Vala was great i like both charicters. And being a farscape fan does not hurt i supose. i also liked the Ori story line.thought it fit in well.

BiscuitKnight

Fordfan now that you mention it, I liked Vala too, although I did think maybe she should flirt with people other than Daniel a bit more to avoid the cliche of sexual tension between people who pretend not to like each other: she should be less focused on Daniel. (Spoiler for S9 here) I think maybe they should have had her sent to the Ori galaxy a few episodes later, because it was sort of like they used her while they didn't have Carter. (End spoiler) On the positives, she's a unique character in Stargate and not a cliche/template and adds something different.

Jack O'Neill I think is one of the greatest characters in any series, especially the episode Abyss where he insists he's not a good guy at all - favorite episode, if I had to make a choice, although the lack of action does make it more "intellectual" choice than entertainment level.

Mitchell I think is a good enough character on his own, he fits in awkwardly to some extent but shares something with Carter as an officer and Air Force personnel and maybe a bit of a bond with Daniel as more of an intellectual than Jack. He acts younger and as sort of the junior member of a team, which is good. I don't think he's any Jack O'Neill and when they try to make him into Jack it feels uncomfortable, but all the same, he's good when they don't try to force him through hoops.

I always wondered why SG got such a huge fanbase. It is a fun series and I watched quite a few episodes, but alas, I never could take it serious.

It always had a kinda plastic and too "lighthearted" approach to it, if that makes any sense.
Somebody care to explain the fascination? Serious question, no slandering. Seems series like SG, Farscape and Andromeda get all the hype.

I personally dig series like "Above and Beyond" or the new "Battlestar Galactica".

BiscuitKnight
10-10-2006, 09:00 AM
Bewolf:

On the Season 9 disks they talk to the producer, and a big part is on the fact that the SG-1 series doesn't take itself seriously. Apparently the producer felt that if he made it too serious it'd be farcical and viewers wouldn't like it. Episodes like Wormhole X-treme that take the piss out of the series are a laugh, and the idea is a Sci-Fi that doesn't take itself too seriously and be "heavy" or depressing or confusing or overdone. I do enjoy this, because Stargate is still mostly serious. I think the producer has a point, in that by being lighthearted it's not seen as such a "nerdy" series, or it makes it more accessible to new viewers somehow, or perhaps people who otherwise would be turned off by the series find it easier to enjoy because it's not a hardcore Sci-Fi. So if anything it makes it more popular, not less, though I do understand what you're saying.

Although I like Stargate as it is, I certainly agree that a more serious Sci-Fi would be good. I think also Stargate might have been more serious, but in the pilot (Children of the Gods P1&2) there was a full nudity scene. Parental groups protested (under the false impression that only kids watch Sci-Fi) and MGM actually deleted the scene from all but the box sets, and the SG-1 series was ordered to tone down the adult content to secure a PG rating. If that hadn't happened, it may have been more serious (including more violence, nudity, sex scenes, swearing, etc). It's worth noting that SG-1 was PG at first (Pilots were M), but now M, and the violence level has perhaps increased a little. If SG-1 had been like Battlestar Galactica (I heard, but I never watched it so I don't know, that there was swearing, a sex scene or scenes and MA15+ level violence?) in 1994 then it is quite possible would have only earned, at best, a cult following. Perhaps the popularity of Stargate SG-1 during the 1990s (during which time I think violence and sexual themes became more acceptable) opened the door for the recent Battlestar Galactica series?

I think both have their benefits, but the fact that Stargate is playful helps it survive the sometimes disjointed storylines and inconsistencies (Eg: Nyrtie is referred to as a male at first, but when she is seen in a later series, she is, obviously, a female. Eg: the Zat'nik'tels originally stunned with the first shot, killed on the second, disintegrated on the third, but after S2 or 3 this was completely phased out, with the episode Wormhole X-treme implying it was a stupid idea - despite the fact that it's a crucial element of the episode "1969") and to gain such a widespread fan base. I like Stargate a lot, but it may have been better as a serious show.
