What was your most harrowing Ner-death in SHIII?

Mine just occurred a couple hours ago.

On my way home, no fish left, crew all rested up and about half a tank of fuel left.

I get a radio contact of TWO heavily defended convoys headed my way, and there's no way I can avoid them. Less than 10 mins. later, a warship is spotted racing down to pund my *** into the ground.

Being the forgetful moron that I become at times: I forgot to check the depth of the water before I called crash dive and ended up destroying my forward bow planes, sonar, and hydrophone. That took off about 15% of my hull integrity.

So there I am, ***-ended with my bow ouching botom at 74 meters below the surface and THREE destroyers (I think 2 of the Hunter III types and one V&W), with no way top tell where they're copming from and NOTHING I can do about it. I couldn't even move the sub without damaging the hull integrity.

Needless to say it was a close one and damn were alot of those DC dropped (I officially hate the hedgehogs) and I survived with about 30% integrity. I blew my ballast and raced home at about 15 knots.

So how about anyone elses experience?

Well, I had one yesterday...was off the coast of Canada/US heavy rain...fog. I get a convoy alert to the north...I proceed at standard speed, surfaced and I was TC at 128x and all of a sudden I here glass break and the hull scream...I had rammed a C3 cargo ship at 14-15 knots. Well his radio must have been working good cause after I dove to periscope depth. My sonar man yelled out warship, bearing 093 distance medium...fast and closing....arrrghhhh. Then agiain on the bearing of 135...and again on 200 of so.... I prepare all four fish in the bow for a salvo into the conoy....2 meeter depth in the high seas fast screws....impact pistol. I fire my spread and then try to stay near the C3 for protection while reloading. I spot a juicy C2 to the aft of me....about 400m or so....visiblity poor. I fire a tight spread from the aft tubes....I score hits on all but 1 torp....must have been a dud. I sank 3 ships. t2 tanker and 2 c2's...After I get 2 torps reloaded in the bow I gain distance to the protective C3 and fire at her...then I heard the roar of engines....yes plural. Two of the 3 escorts are bearing down on me.....CRASH DIVE!!!! Rudder 12 degrees to port. They drop there DC's as I race to the bottom....200m deep here. I slow and level at 90m....hull not in best shape...silent running....rudder full port...more explosions....CLOSE...set septh at 30m....ahead full....DC's EVERYWHERE.......I was bounced around as I made for the middle of the convoy....hull down to 40% stayed at 30m depth and crept away to the south...took a total of about 2-2.5 hours for the above to happen....I raced home as well....with one torp left....That is the close I have ever come....to death on this career....lol.

In early 1940 in my VIIB I came across a convoy escorted by one single corvette. Crept up on the flank, sent a T1 into the corvette, and now I have an unescorted convoy.

Sank the bigger enemy ships with my remaining torpedoes, and then entered the convoy and surfaced to pick off the coastal and small merchants with the 88. Did that with no problems until the very LAST one. That merchant must have been packed with ammo, because she blew very spectacularly and in the process killed my gun crew, trashed my radio antenna, caused major flooding and knocked me down to 20% hull integrity.

Made it home again, and made a mental note to not get so close next time!
