From The Sacred Warriors page 65;

"A torpedo from the submarine Albacore had caused the loss of the great ship. What impressed Jo so much was the remarkable attack by a pilot from Taiho who had just taken off from the carrier when he saw the wake of the torpedo heading straight for the ship. Instantly he crash-dived into the torpedo."

He destroyed this first torpedo this way.

I doubt this would work, in game. Has anyone tested whether or not you can destroy a torpedo (by any method) once launched?

I don't know if you can stop an air-launched torpedo with an aircraft, but if if an enemy ditches near a task force the destroyers fire a slew of torpedos at your aircraft. None have ever hit in the games that I played but the AI seemed to think an aircraft was a valid target so who knows?

Was persuing a TBF that dropped a torp & tried to machine gun it before it reached our ship. Wasn't successful. Doesn't mean it can't be done tho. Interesting idea for some testing ?

I was unable to stop a torpedo by shooting at it,firing rockets at it or hitting it with my plane when all ordinance was gone.

But I may be a bad shot.

I suspect it is not modeled.

I dont think you can stop Torpedos with machingun fire. If you could, I dont see why battleships wouldent have machinguns placed facing toward the water.. In fact I never heard of anyone stopping a torpedo by cannon fire either.. I am not saying it couldent be done in real life, but never hear of it. I dont think that is because no one thought of it.. I think its because its inpractical, allmost impossible..

It is possible - I once was able to destroy one by MG/cannon fire - but only once.

I can't recall the depth settings used on actual air-dropped torpedoes, but I'm assuming somewhere between 12-20 feet. That's a lot of water, and even heavy machine gun bullets use up energy fast when striking water.

And the general opinion in Silent Hunterland is that warships probably wouldn't see the torpedo, and bullets fired from warships would bounce off the water.

What were the basic torpedo countermeasures of WWII?

I know currently we have a great system for our Navy and some NATO countries called the SLQ-25A. It consists of a winch, towed body arrays and an electronics console that work (in a way that cannot be exactly explained in publichttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) to attract the torpedos away from the ship.

I think the torpedo countermeasures were to shoot down the torpedo-bomber, and to drive out of the way of the torpedo, in the Second World War!

Torpedoees ('s sp. ?) in WW2 by and large were not guided. In some cases they were acousticaly guided and were quite effective. These torpedoes tended to home in on the rear (engines and propellers) of the target ship.

A British countermeasure that was effective (and exported to the USN [I believe] was literally placing a pneumatic hammer in a seel case and dragging it behind the ship to be switched on when under attack.

Ah OK, thanks Waldo. I knew I had read something about an acoustic bouy or similar device that was the pre-cursor to modern-day torpedo countermeasures.

It IS possible to stop a torpedo like that pilot in the initial story did it.

I've already done that, however you either need to be very precise when diving into the torpedo, or if you aren't that good, do it like I did it:

Fly in behind the torpedo, try to precisely match it's heading, overtake it and "crashland" your plane into the water in front of the torpedo. If you did well, the torpedo will hit your plane and explode.
IMPORTANT note: for this approach, you need a large plane that only sinks slowly - I did it with the AI B-29 in a self-created DF map. The funniest thing was that as the torpedo hit my B-29, it exploded but didn't do any damage to it!

Note: I did this long before I heard the intial story... I just figured that a torpedo in PF detonates when hitting a solid object (ships, sinkink ships, landmass, etc.).

And since a plane in the water is also still hitable, I guessed it still counts as a solid object.

Awww, don't put the Rufe down. Give the Rufe campaign a try, the plane is a hoot to fly. Warning, Rufe campaign may be in the DGEN beta.

Maybe that nice pontoon will detonate the torpedo ?

haven't had a chance to try it tho.

Oh & I like the Rufe Campaign too. Quite fun.

oh BTW I took out a B-25 with my main pontoon-it hit the wing. When I landed my Rufe slowly sank til the tail was a few feet under water.
