I used to play Silent Service in the 80's, it was fun.
What sub sim is the best for me to buy in 2005.
Thank You, Max.

I hardly call SH2 a good sim.. nothing but fancy graphics for its time and lousy AI.

how here's a good sim! The Hunt For Red October!
hehe, the fact is.. we haven't had any good sub sims since sh1 and aod... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

SH2 fully moded gets closer to CAOD or SH1 -that was a golden age, no doubt!

But, hey, last night I reengaged SH1! Is even better I used to remember! AI is hard to beat! Those japanese planes are outstandings foes!

For nuclear subs, maybe I should choose Sub Command.

Who's played MicroProse's Red Storm Rising?
I had it for both my C64 and Amiga back in the days of great MicroProse Sims. In fact I still have all the games (probably over 100) and both machines stored, but they're over a 1000 miles away from where I am now! Maybe by this summer I'll be able to travel back to retrieve them and set them back up.

I played the Hunt for the Red October, but it was an arcade game. How do you call that a subsim?
It was a game where you went with the sub through a 2 D sea full of rocks & obstacles, and you could shot torpedoes, missiles and strange depth charges in thousands. YOu attacked while doing so incountable hordes of helicopters, planes, ships, subs... And you got score for sunking them. THe whole screen was full of enemyes and torpedoes, and there was no or little history. Level after level, you went closer to US coast, your last goal.
Not very fun, I have to add.

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif ok I understand.

So, yes, it is very sad because even having mixed the good things of sh-2 and the good ones of AotD you could have had a great sim. (with some patches, of course, like better modding the engine systems).

Well, Sh-3 promises even more... a crew, more ships... more options (flak config.)... we'll see.

I HAVE ONLY ONE THING TO SAY AND THATS THAT THERE IS NO WAY ON EARTH THAT ACES OF THE DEEP(OR CAOD)IS BETTER THAN SH2.
Aces of the deep sucks and is far far to ropey to ever be enjoyable,I'm sorry folks but it had to be said sooner or later,

Whats the latest on the lifeboats?are we getting them or not?

I recently got SH1 working on Win XP and its far superior to SHII, haven played CAOD though.

Don't think much to Enigma Rising Tide.

SHIII will cause a week off of work when it arrives.

Silent Service II (amiga version) was probably the most enjoying WWII sib-sim I have ever played until present day http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hell! I still play it! lol
Using an amiga emulator of course http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Glad to be back on board Kapitan,

I eventually got my 1\72 type vii,I left it off until christmas to put it together, only about 5 minor glueing mistakes which is good for me.

I ended up choosing the early u552 to make, subs look a way better with the net cutters on the front.

SHI was far superior to SHII. The only really huge problems I remember from it was the DD AI around land.

SHII I didn't waste my time with once I knew there was no dynamic campaign. I wouldn't be buying SHIII either if they hadn't added the dynamic campaign.

I have rewarded ubisoft's decission to take the extra time and make a dynamic campaign with buying two copies with the recognition manual.

The only thing SH1 had over SH2 was lights and cool japanese ships and i didnt know i missed lights until i saw that there was lights in SH3.

I liked the ambition in SH2.

Far and away CAOD. The campaign was wonderfully long and the gameplay for the time was fantastic. My only complaint, if anything, was that the game was TOO long. I was never patient enough to keep playing after 1941 (I always started in 1939). Of course, I grew up on Silent Service II, so there's a decent amount of nostalgia for that game as well.

There is a game called ENIGMA Rising Tide (http://www.naval-combat.com//). It's full 3d, looks very very nice. Try it! You would not regret this !

By a longshot CAOD and SH1. Both had dynamic campaigns which gave the games longevity, the DD AI's were pretty good, except near land for SH1. Unfortunately CAOD's graphics are a bit hard to take in this day and age. SH2 had much improved graphics, but the game stank to high heaven out of the box. Only the dedicated modwork by numerous modfans helped save this game into something almost playable. Even then the savegame bug which lobotomised an already weak DD AI killed the game for me. (Plus the merchants for ever colliding with each other and the DD's, the list goes on.........). At last we have a game nearing release that promises to be a worthy successor to CAOD and SH1.
