the TiE thing looks more manouverable & deadly

but those cannon on the X-wing look like total A-Kickers

I bet the X-wing fighters laser guns are like the Spitfire guns in FB/AEP/PF . http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

X-wing, why because it has shields and a Tie fighter doesn't.

In light of the recent StarWars release, I have to side with the Dark Side and vote for the TIE fighter choice...afterall they win this one.

I voted X wing, because of the shields. The 4 cannons offer more than enough firepower, the shields provide additional security when outnumbered 4:1 and at any time you could disengage and hyperspace. Plus, the proton torpedoes are worth every ounce they weigh http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Could have voted TIE Fighter but the lack of shields, lack of anti capital ship weaponry, lack of range... Not counting the horrible stability in athmospheric flight and the horrendous view to left and right.

You should have added the Twi'lek Ugly - the so called Deathseed - a TIE fighter pilot ball with X-wing S-foils. Shielded and hyperspace capable, the lack of proton torpedoes is compensated by the perfect visibility.

I chose the TIE (Forgot the lack of shields. However, doesn't the TIE Advanced have them - trying to remember from my Xwing vs TIE days)Whenever I fly the 190, I tend to find myself thinking " Yeah. Darth Vader would definitely choose this as his ride." Using the Force is all well and good but wicked speed, snappy roll-rate and a fistful of cannons doesn't hurt, either. Darth always had some hard-hittin' firepower to back him up if skill, the Force, and coolness failed him.

Hmmm... I naturally favor the good guys, so I would prefer the rebels. But then again, I have a wife and kids with a mortgage now, so I would have to weigh the Empires steadier income, benefits, and pension vs. the shiftier rebels.

I`ve always been an Empire fan and I`ve always enjoyed wiping out the rebels. Ever since I was a kid I`d have all the Empire stuff (biker scouts were my favourite troop) and waste my best m8`s poxy rebel scum... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

Kinda strange really, considering I don`t touch Luftwaffe planes at all in IL2....

p.s.
BTW If I was commanding that group of Biker Scouts in Return of the Jedi they`d never have blown that chase scene against Luke and Leia...

And as for those Ewoks... Let`s just say the empire would have been feasting on juicy little bears if I`d had my way!

Are the vehicles in START WARS similar to the ones in STAR WARS? They seem to have the same names.

TIE Interceptor all the way. It's like an angry bee. Tiny, flies circles around most ships and 4 guns! (or at least in the games it does..).

A-Wings are as fast and maneuverable as a TiE Interceptor, plus they have defensive shields...and just look at those huge twin Event Horizon engines!!!!

Tie Defender is way too uber, with tractor beam it is all too easy...

I will stay on a X-Wing. T-A is a even better choice, but I like X-Wing. In the game 4-guns are easier to shoot with, due to the low firing rate and convengence, so anything with 4 guns enjoy a considerable edge.

Given that the Empire seem to be based on the British, I have to side with them.

I mean really, in real life how would a bunch of rebels beat the discpline of the Empire?

A bunch of Rebel Scum managed to pull that one off starting around 1778 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gifThat's when a major world power (France) first recognised the United States and entered into a treaty with them

One day while being chased in my venerable P-47, Rust Bucket, I was rolling at the top of a loop, spiraling down and back up, and it struck me that it was just like that scene when the Millennium Falcon was being chased through the asteroids by TIE fighters, fire streaking by the canopy.

Since Rust Bucket already looked beat up and rusty, putting Han Solo in the pit was a natural fit. Flew in those colors and face until I joined the 56th. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

Millennium Falcon or X-Wing all the way. The Empire is doomed.... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/784.gif

Personally I would rather 'B-Wing', from Return Of The Jedi.

Almost as fast as an X-Wing, more manouverable than a Y-wing, better shields than anything else in space, huge torpedo loadout, 3 ion cannons, 3 laser cannons, gyroscopically stabilised cockpit (great for those deflection shots) and it just looks cool.

So you too noticed the similarities between the Y-wing & the P-38? It's funny that Lucas put so many WWII "things" into his films: The sound of the Ties = Stuka siren, the design & grey colours of the Emperial fleet is very Lufwaffish, the Emperial uniforms look German, the weapons look German (mg42, Lüger, mp40 & mp44). The rebels use RAF callsigns (red leader etc.) & the Death Star missions reminds me of the combined strikes in Operation Overlord. I'm sure others can think of many more analogies. As for the choice of weapon I'd pick a Tie because of the superior roll rate http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The Stormtrooper rifle is just a Bren with a few extra bits added, and the Desert trooper Machine Gun is a WW1 vintage Lewis Gun, again with just a few bits and bobs added. Same for Han Solo's blaster, its an old 'Broom Handled' Luger.

The cockpit on the TIE Fighter was inspired by the glazing on the nose of the B-29. Also, all the 'gunnery' scenes when Han and Luke are fighting off TIE Fighters after they escape the Death Star are taken from WW2 guncamera and cine films. Lucas got his hands on about 50 hours of WW2 gun footage, edited the lot up the way he wanted it and then sent it to ILM so that they would have some visual reference for how he wanted the X-Wings and TIEs to move.

So basically, the Death Star aerial sequence is really a homage to WW2 fighter pilots.

I Disagree that the empire is based entirely on the british. The empire seems to be based more on imperial japan ( the fast and agile TIEs that cant withstand much damage reminds you of anything? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ), the Star destroyers remind a bit the japanese battleships ( the japanese-fortress like structure in their back is obvious ). Apart from those they seem to be based also a bit on the british, and ( of course ) in the nazis ( since obviously the empirials are fascists and racists - they have only humans in their ranks )

Obviously George Lucas based much of his fantasy world to the real world as it was in the time of ww2 ( he admits after all, that the starfighter dogfight sequences are based on real ww2 footage )

Monson74

I think the Tie cockpit looks more like the nose section of a Ju88 or Do17.

Btw - IMHO the "Empirial March"-theme is definitely a "Nazi-song".

Assuming the kind of physics we see in modern space sims:
The tie series. Why? Simple, they are faster, so they can run. The are more maneuverable so they can turn inside of ANYTHING. Since there is no gravity, there is no need to worry about energy retention, etc... The lack of hyper drives on the intercepter and basic tie are problematic but they are on the defender and advanced. Shields are really a worry when you can easilly shake anything just by turning inside him, but they are on the defender and advanced anyways.

Assuming something with a little more reality:
Neither, both would suck.

Proton Torpedoes on the X-Wing are overmodelled. I mean, one shot and it takes out a whole Death Star. It is a totally uber, noobie fighter.

The Empire stands for order and discipline, none of that liberal anarchistic pinko BS.

I always thought the stormtroopers' weapon was a jazzed up Sterling SMG with the folding stock clipped up under the barrel.

All the Rebel pilots were raised on doughnuts though, bunch of lardies the lot of them.

Not that I am a SW-geek, but...

X-wing allways beats Tie FIghter.. speed is life. Also in space. Planes with Shields allways can transfer their energy from shields to engines, so X-wing is faster than Tie FIghter http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif (about par with Tie Interceptor though )

Offcourse, nothing beats Tie Advanced, and über Tie Defender. Fortunalety for the rebels, they were not there in numbers http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Rebels all the way.

A-Wing for BnZ

X-Wing - the P38 of the stars

B-Wing & Y-Wing for groundpounding
(the Y-wings Ion-Cannons work just like the trusty 50s against a FW190. A hit in the tanks and it's dead in space.)

Yes, then you can proceed, and dock with the disabled FW-190 and perhaps capture it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Even a modified CORT can't stand a chance to a TIE Defender. Well, if you had the days of xwing vs tie or xwing alliance online (doing a sum of kills, I had more than 6000 human kills, so I know what I'm talking about http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif), you'd know that an xwing hardly has any chance vs a TIE Interceptor, or even an Awing due to his poor manouverability, low firepower and marginal speed advantage but much less acceleration. The only slight advantage rebel ships have it's on a head on but their size or lack of punch almost cancels it, then they are dead meat.
The TIE Advanced (shield hyperdrive, a good load of concussion stuff) already outclasses any rebel ship by heaps for it's speed, size and manouverability, let alone a Defender which is Uber in all respects.

X-Wings always!
Dont you knnow guys there is an interview where Wedge Antilles explain that as soon as after hoth battle was having his x-wing overboosted?

"yeah, my crewman overboosted my x-wing so I could outrun easily any tie-series fighter. Only the tie defender could stand any chance against me (laughs)"
Wedge Antilles, 50th 2nd death star destruction aniversary.

I have the original interview somewhere, as soon as I find it I will post along with the original document from Rogue Squadron maintenance services about overboosting the x-wings.

G. Walker Bush would take a Tie figter.

This **** terrorists (calling themself Alliance) are going to celeb a party after they kills thousends of civilists at the Death Star which was still under construction.
Computerspecialist, construction workers, tilers, painters... All are killed.

What stand the alliance for? Did you ever heard a political statement? This movies are pure propaganda!
Do they fight for democraty? NO, the Jedi are an closed circle, aristrocatic- if the force are not strong in you, they will tell you what to do, and what is right... no need for them to do this through TV and newspapers, just a motion with the hand and you are their puppet!

Aprox. lost for the Death Star - Did the Jedis ever gave a number of the people that died there??

Death Star Specifications:

* Size: 160 kilometers in diameter
* Crew: 152,276 gunners, 485,560 general crew members. 1,295,950 troops, 127,570 stormtroopers, 75,860 starship support staff, 334,432 starship pilots and crew.

485560 general crew members,... so even more civilans were on board to complete it!!

15000 workers build the ships of the olympic class, and as a military hospital ship the Britannic was able to spend room for 3000 wounded soldiers plus crew so lets say..4500 people. We see three times more workers than compleate crew on board.

So a very optimistic assessment: just the general crew of the deathstar and just x2 to calculate the civilist workers.

The Alliance killed one million civilists in just a few minutes... is this the meaning of collateral damdage?

George W. would of flown one these-the Force is strong with this one.

I always thought of the Imperial Forces as some sort of space nazis trying to enslave and control whoever they could, I mean just look at Darth Vaders helmet. The Emperor--whoaa theres some ugly dictator for ya, even uglier than Manuel Noriega or Kim Jong Il.

Talking of the celluoid monstrosity itself, here's a good review of it in one of our more liberal rags:
