We were just drinking beer on the lobby and it occured to us in the chat that we'd like to see this great game on console very soon since the cooler on a PC is so loud. Any changes?

Yeah! Good question.

Oleg, please comment on this! That cooler is driving me crazy!

Since we're at it, please consider porting it to the new Nintendo DS.. Think of it, portable PF on a bluetooth network.. Yay! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Funny, I was playing it with my buddy last month on his 1980s Intellivision system. It was a simplified version of Forgotten Battles, to be sure ... you could only select the I-16 I think, and your plane was either only solid red or solid green. Also, there was no cockpit view and you could only view the plane from broadside. Other than that, almost exactly the same game. I crashed a lot because of the physics engine. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Edit: Look what I found! http://archive.gamespy.com/legacy/fargo/biplanes_a.shtm

Anybody remember "Combat" for the Atari 2600? Now that was some serious dogfighting action!

Or some water cooling system will do the trick.

And a note... the average console player is a little different from the average IL2-FB-AEP-PF player, IMO.

IL-2 FB requires : 1GHZ , 512 RAM Minimum
PS2 is about 350mghz , less than 20 mb RAM .....
+ no joystick compatible ....

You are right. I also think there's no way to put IL2 on PS2, although that is good idea. Lack of joystick, enormous amount of required keys, etc.. makes this 'mission impossible' IMO. But as always, Oleg has the last word. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Could we have that too? I mean corsair or something is not too complicated even my girlfriend could handle that, with PS2 I could like include her on this gaming instead of always sitting alone in front of the computer. Up to now we only play worms or some kung fu schei├če together...the more I think the better the idea sounds...NGage sounds also cool, although don't have one and PS2 is coming first during X-mas. Of course would need Jiri to make HL on console as well which could be hard, I mean chat with 8 buttons or something but I figure it could be done if we restricted ourselves to four word vocabulary or something. u r pwnd - it should work I think.

What about the CPU instructions for a program "rivaling government simulations" (Quote from Oleg)? When I was in the military, it took an entire floor of the complex that I worked in to have the computing power of my AMD64.

You have underestimated the power of a PC . . . and overestimated the power of gaming consoles.

Nice bit of trolling. You are very skilled at this. It was all I could do to keep from flaming you. As if some one could think that PF would run on a PS2. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Hee hee. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gifAssuming you could get it to run on PS2 or equivelant i would be for it as long as the game kept to it's "serious" roots and not pandered for the mass games market too much.
It would keep my computer clear, and not have to time share it LOL http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

What would be the pricetag on a PS2 that had a 3 GHZ processor, 2 gigs of RAM, a 256 MB GPU, a 128 MB sound card, and could still fit into a 4" tall, 12" long, 18" wide plastic case that wouldn't overheat and require liquid cooling? All that for 150 dollars? Sign me up! problem is, it doesn't exist to my knowledge at any price, not just 150 bucks. That console I listed would be about...2 grand...same as your PC...and you do use the PC for things besides playing PF, right? I did my resume on mine...

Then there's the graphics reproduction on the standard TV set. Not as good as a good PC monitor

I wish that a game console could do all those things, because I still have an orignal PlayStation. heck, I still have the original Pong game. But it's not gonna play PF, it doesn't have the guts

You can sort of. Just build a 600$ PC and turn the settings all the way down and play in 640*480. That's how it would be on a PS2 or Xbox, just in this case it would be better, because the game would have to be edited to allow for lower graphics settings if it were on an Xbox or PS2.

Bearcat:

PS2s have surprisingly powerful processors. They are a vector architecture, though, like old Fujitsu super computers and to get the best out of them you have to design your algorithms from the ground up to suit. If the algorithms can't be parallelised on a vector architecure they end up using just the scalar co processor, which is much less powerful. So basically whilst in theory a PS2 has a powerful processor porting IL2/FB/AEP/PF to unlock enough of that power to make it viable would be a nightmare. I've been on a Fujitsu course and I wouldn't want to try and program the things!

But even if you could unlock that processing power, there isn't enough memory on it for a IL2.

There was the old urban legend (may be true, who knows) that Saddam Hussein was trying to buy up PS2s to build a super computer. It's not necessarily a bad choice for vectorisable tasks that require little memory and low internode communication overheads. At least in terms of the processors. Maintaining 1000 PS2s or something in a machine room would be an absolute nightmare!
