View Full Version : My first experience with the Finnish

I was flying on a sever recently and having a successful and enjoyable time escorting bombers to and from their targets. Although we didn't meet any enemy aircraft I was shot down.

I had just flown two escort missions when I was returning to base when I spotted a "friendly" He111 flying off towards it's target. I decded to escort him as far as possible and with the alt and even if I ran out of fuel I could deadstick my 109 back to base. This, IMHO, would have made for the perfect flight.

As I cautiously approached the He111, being careful not to startle him, I could see it was a Finnish He111. I thought, "cool, first time I see this online". I was slowly moving in to get a closer look at the paint sceme when suddenly boom, boom, boom, squeaky engine and an oil covered windscreen. Before I could even think of where the enemy was I saw a message in the top left hand corner of my screen. Can't remember the exact message but it contained "sorry" and "wrong key". http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I laughed and told him it was no problem. I rolled away, smoking and dam near blinded and headed for any friendly base I could find. It's no wonder the Finns did so well in the war; nothing could get near them. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I figured this was ironic considering how good I felt about the mission upto the point of being shot down by a friendly. Then it was just funny as he11 to me. I did make it back to a base only to find rockets just missing my 6 and exploding in front of me on my final approach. I guess that long trail of smoke is anti-stealth. I ended with a nose over trying to avoid what ever red a/c was trying to kill me. I never even saw the enemy.

Anyways, the point of this post was to get others to post about memorable missions that started with a great sense of success and ended in a not so successful way.

Good story. Realistic http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif.
I remember that I have read in one book about one of the highest scoring Finnish ace who shot down Do-217 (or Ju-188?) because he did not see the markings. No question asked just fire. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Fortunately for German crew they managed to bail out (AFAIK).

So when they managed to $crew up in real life, no wonder that we can $crew up also.

I found the whole thing to be quite humorous. When I'm flying escort I am devoting my complete concentration, flying a zigzag above him while trying to watch him and looking for the enemy. It's the hardest work I've seen while flying. When I'm alone I'm somewhat lazy to look for enemy but when I fly escort I use a lot of effort.

After all that work of protecting 2 bombers and burning off nearly a full tank of fuel, then sacrificing my chance to return to base safely in order to protect another, and finally to be shot down by the guy I wanted to protect, is somewhat ironic. But I also feel it was probably somewhat historical. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

funny story ^_^ bomber pilots tend do funny thing sometime. here what happen when fly with friend online.

me and two friend fly at 10000 feet in ki-61-I-ko. All of sudden messages start appear on general ingame chat channel .

(red bomber pilot 2)lucky not seen any fighter yet
(red bomber pilot 1)yeah
(red bomber pilot 1)you jinx check direct above us 3 of them

at this point me and friend start wondering if those 3 fighters are us.

(red bomber pilot 2) let me use zoom view and check markings
(red bomber pilot 2)i see meat ball they have custom skin also

this point we realise it us ^_^ as we always fly why with custom skin when possible. friend then rolls over so fly upside down and change to public channel

Hahaha nice story kenji! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I am very fond of the Finnish. Those that go online are among the most well mannered and friendly, and are also great pilots.

Good flight that ended badly:

In my Spitfire Vb (fave variant), took off and went straight to enemy base. This is not FR by the way. Anyway, I shot down IIRC a La-7, 109G-2 or 6, and B-239, and still had cannon ammo left.
Anyway, I'm cruising back to base, and began to line up for what was looking to be my best landing. I wanted to check what someone had said, however instead of pressing Shift+Tab, I pressed Alt Tab. The black sequence from the game to desktop was the longest I've ever experienced! I jumped back in as soon as I could, however, it was too late. All that remained of my faithful 5 was a burning crater near the edge of the runway http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif

Hotel-B, I've done similar things also. I use the space bar for "look up". This turned out not to be such a good idea during TnB manuevers in a d-fight as my pinky finger tends to press the "windows" key. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Those 4 seconds of yelling "sh1t, sh1t, sh1t!!!" never seem to help. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Saw recently a P38 with Finnish markings on. Should've chased him all the way. Grr.

Ps. Finns - the people
Finnish - the language etc.

Hi, Friz! I think I was there, too! I took off right after you and followed you very close. You told LeOs.K_Leko1 (The He 111 below), that there was a spot under him (or near him). I flew right behind your right wing. You were descending on a loose curve trying to spot the enemy.

Suddenly I sighted the enemy. I had no time to write to you and it was a pity that we were not in radio contact.

I attacked the Russian and shot him down in a head-to-head situation diving steeply towards him. At that moment I noticed the crash of which you talked about. I thought the enemy crashed on the heinkel. I did not know it was on you.

I had to fly back to base because I was going to grocery store to get food and I was almost late, so I could not stay there and see the end of the mission.

However, there was a good feeling there in the combat. I wish we could talk in the radios next time we meet.

See you there!

What I wrote above, was related to this story. I really think, that it was not a friendly, but enemy aeroplane that damaged you. As I said, I thought that it was a Russian aeroplane, but I thought he destroyed the He 111. I cound not see, because I was combatting at that time.

Very hectic moment anyhow. COOL!

Hi Walstein,

Yes, I remember. You were lower than I. I did see and enemy plane and went looking for it. My biggest problem is I cannot see anything. If I lose sight for a split second I cannot find them again. To be honest I'm getting fed up with my equipment. After four years I still cannot get used to a hatswitch. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

My skill is gone and it seems it's not coming back. Maybe it's time to change games. Don't mind me, I'm just ranting.

Actually, this was about an hour before you had joined the server. It was also a different map. You joined after the map changed. But I think it was Leko flying the He111 that shot me. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

OK, here is a funny online story:

A few years ago, when I was quite new to online wars, I was flying VEF.

We were at the point in the war when we (Luftwaffe) first got FW-190's. Unfortunately, on this particular mission, I was not able to grab a 190 before all the slots filled up.

So, the mission starts, and off I go in my Bf109G-2. We were soon jumped by some Laggs that came in from no where, and I got cut off from my wingman.

After diving away, and hiding at cloud level for a few minutes, I thought it might be safe to extend, try and gain some alt, and come back to the spot we were jumped to acquire the enemy.

I came out of the cloud and checked below me... there was a dot in the distance!

I dove and hugged the terrain, being cautious to stay at the bandit's low six.

I popped up and fired a good long burst into the tail of the bandit at a pretty long distance.

The plane exploded into a million pieces, and I had claimed my first online war human kill!!!

But I noticed a message in the text that said "Friendly aircraft destroyed"!!!

Next thing I knew, the guy was yelling at me in the chat!

I was so embarrassed. I dove on the 190, and not seeing any radiators under the wings, immediately thought he was a bad guy!

I always wondered how friendly fire could happen in real life... That day I found out how. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Ha ha ha, Fehler, if we're ever in the same server I'll remember to fly something with visible radiators. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I was on a server once and a plane with French markings crossed my path. I had the 109g14, therefor I was on the blue side. I quickly turned and gave chase of the French plane. As I was coming up on his 6 I was wishing he'd turn but he just kept flying straight. Thinking he doesn't realize I'm there I fired a short burst over his head to startle him. He turned slightly to look at me an I blasted him with the 108. He was history.

Can't remember the messages exactly but it was something like this;

Buddy ; Fritz, what the he11 did you shoot me for?
Me; I didn't, I shot the enemy.
Buddy; You just killed me!
Me; No, I got a French plane
Buddy: it's only a skin, didn't you see the blue icons?
Me; Ooops, sorry.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Embarrassing but funny as he11 in hindsight. A 109 with French markings just doesn't look like a 109.

That also reminds me of the first time I flew red side online. I had already been flying for about a year but always blue. Once I got of the ground I totally forgot I had changed sides.

I couldn't understand why the reds were not fighting back. They we also easier than usual to shoot down. To make matters worse, I was on a Chinese server and couldn't read the messages from the other pilots. A little more embarrassing were the messages "Friendly Aircraft Destroyed". I was thinking, wow, a lot of stray bullets. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

I shot down 4 or 5 teammates before I realized what I was doing. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_redface.gif That's embarrassing.

Another time, some 2 years ago I was also flying occassionally on the red side. Then I found some jerk flying his fighter with the German markings. I flew behind him, chatted something ugly and - shot a short burst - just to remind him.

When back in airfield somebody told me to change my markings; I had flown with the german markings on... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I am quite unhappy that I can control a planeset in the DF DS, but not their markings.

With the usual crowd on my little server, we flexibly change sides to balance the teams.

Now this opens the door wide open for this:

xxx: which yak has german marks?!
(long pause)
yyy: uhmm... its me... forgot to change
xxx: ok, be more careful
(short pause)
zzz: sorry, i think i have red stars on my bf109
xxx: great, at least you two can fight

My only team kill so far happened with a wrongly marked, not communicating plane. D@mn, I knew that something was wrong, (the plane's shape was not right) but firing opportunity was very short, and the markings were clearly visible...

I was flying on a no-icon server once. I thought it would be fun to join the red side, take a Spit, and dress it up with a "captured" skin. There were two immidiate problems.

1) AI gunner 6th sense. Flying bomber escort was a bad idea.http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

2) most players had their skins turned off. Trying to form up with 4 109's was a bad idea. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Lessons learned. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

(The funny part being: 'fly back to base'. Why not just press 'Escape'? I love that kind of dedication!)

I recognize the friendly fire thing:
Joined a DF server. Took off in a Spit. Found where the action was. Got me into a nice position to fire at some enemy plane. No enemey threatening me. Looking good. Next thing I know: Another Spit opens up fire on me .... Boom. Chat showing: "Sorry, I just switched sides ..." http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
