Unfortunally most Soviet books from that time you get more propaganda than facts while you read.

During the battle of Kursk the official figures where for the three first days; 1539 tanks which of whom was 70 tiger tanks, 649 a/c and 20.000 men.
The true figures where 1/10 of the offical for tanks and a/c:s and 1/5 for men.

During the cold war the western scientist estimated the losses made by red army army during wwII. The got the official version from USSR, the war journals from the axis-forces.

The estimated that the axis-forces overrated the losses made by red army, but the axis figures where fairly correct on the western front.

During the period when russian archives where open for scientifical reasearch the researchers found out that the losses where three to four times higher than the offical soviet figures and eaven the axis had underestimated the losses made by red army.

As an example POW
The traditional version of the soviet soldier was that he was stubborn and determinated with good moral with a good vill to defend the socialist revolution and homeland.
When american english troops where attacking only one percent of the soldiers gave up, but during the red army offensive operation at Kursk 1943 10% of their losses where POW.

During offensive operations german losses because of soldiers gave up where % of %.

In Normandy where the majority of POW from the defenders units with non-german soldiers.

During the defence of France, Italy and Russia aprox 2% of the German losses where POW.

Most of the german units in Normandy where overaged and badly equipped.
Although whas the battle efficiency ten times bigger at german units.

1941 where 3.000.000 soviet soldiers Pow and during 1945 where 34500 soviet soldiers POW a remarkable figure for an victorious army.

Unfortunally todays russian officials is not so willing to give access to their archives. Its up to you to figure why it is that way today.
