i just read on gamespot that SH4 is well in the works! PTO this time. "hopefully thay will be some USA battle ships http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif " It has been said that only playble subs will be USA. gato being one type out of 4. it will use a modafide version of the SH3 engine with improved and stream lined crew mangment as well as a improved Dgen campaign with a more varity in mission objectives. hopefully thay will be smart enough to keep starforce out of the picture.

The SH4 rumors have been flying around for awhile - I won't hold my breath. SH3 is a great sim once well modded (and for me it got 100% better after a massive crew fatigue cfg. change) and do hope to see another edition added.

My father was on CHARR in WWII---I will definitely get it. The surface ship graphics, already pretty good in SH3, look a magnitude better for this item. The smoke and flash look positively amazing.

I bet we still have GPS navigation, we wont know water temperature or salinity or a myriad of other things.

Their full switch is missing a dozen switches at least. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

Full realism in SH3 with manual TDC is too easy, no challenge. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

I am a little dissapointed. I wish they would make Destroyer Command 2 before Silent Hunter 4. Although, In a way, SH4 will make DC2 easier to make because the maps, ships, planes, dynamic campaign will already be in place for both atlantic and pacific. All they need to do is switch from sub to surface ships. However, I will only get DC2 if it has playable cruisers and battleships. Now THAT would be great.

I personally feel it would greatly add to the campaign, being able to have a battleship escorted by cruisers and destroyers. Then the player could chose which ships he wants to control.

However, instead of "sail to patrol zone" like we have in SH3, For DC2 it would probably be better to just start near the objective. The kind of thing I have in mind for DC2 is a merge of Destroyer Command, Fighting Steel, and Silent Hunter 3/4.

I would never stop playing that game ...

Ahhh this looks great! I loved SH3, and I'm really looking forward to this sim! My first sub sim was Silent Hunter, and I couldn't get enough of it. It's also great that they are in the Pacific, although I was hoping that you could play both Japanese and US... but it doesn't matter to me. Maybe an add-on later would give us that extra option. Either way I'll get this when it comes out in 2007

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif kinda reminds me of another UBI sim that neglected finishing the first theater and jumped to the pacific http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif Wish they would've fixed all the **** missing from the Atlantic first.

WOW! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
I have to ask, is it really worth it? Although it is a period in history that I don't neccessarily have as much knowledge of, and that Jutland/Suriago strait is more of my forte.

The big thing I am after is either a dynimic campaign, or a random mission generator allowing me to specify map, ships, weather exc... Does this sim have that? Or are the missions entirely scripted like SH2/DC?

As long as there is that dynamic element to the gameplay, and I am talking campaign mode here, I will definitlely buy it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Get the demo. The missions are scripted, but there's an expansion that implements a dynamic campain. WWI releases are predicted "later" (2008?) by the dev team.

If SH4 doesn't include at least one playable Dutch submarine I won't buy it.

If you buy DISTANT GUNS, Scharnhorst 1943, you get a random scenario generator, but all you can choose are the size of the action, the duration of the action, and your side---you are not able to select ships, weather, sea state, etc. I rather like it this way because you may get bushwhacked. I have had it for a month but I have been too busy to do much with it. My only gripe is that you can't position yourself on the compass platform of a flagship and be confined to what you can see from there. For the big gun era, I would like nothing more than a simulator which allows you to be either captain or the gunnery officer in the main director---the only thing like that which we have now is DESTROYER COMMANDER. DISTANT GUNS appears to be excellent.

Sounds like I will end up getting it then. However, I really won't have much time to play it until later this year. But thanks for the site. Are the updates free add ons just like Oleg? Or are they payed downloads?

leitmotiv

Updates free---expansions like the forthcoming WWI version---pay. It is really well done and beats the heck out of anything else there is available for steel-gun-era ships now. SALVO! is another one I have to play---I have it. It is wooden ships from the Dutch Wars to the end of the Napoleonic Wars.

Er, dunno about SEAWOLVES. I bought SH3, played it a bit, and dropped it because I am not very interested in WWII German U-boats. I would be very interested in a WWI submarine sim. SH4 is my cup of tea.

Take it back if you can! Seawolves was basically pirate job. A developer took stuff people had made and released for free and stuck it in a box without thier permission.

SSI also released the later Close Combat series. Those games are still brilliant today, I wish I could play them, but I get an error that "BlitSurface is incomplete". Real drag.

GNB sort of ~can~ be run through DOSBOX but I guess it would take a 10Gz CPU to get a
decent framerate.

I have some old-old PC's but no good place to set up just to run GNB, I have 2 of the set.
I really did like the detail level and not needing to microcontrol at all but still being
able to see any part of what was happening. The damage status and control was impressive
for the time for example but I played more a simpler freebie naval sim just because of the
speed of battles and reduced head load. If I wanted to work, I had work that paid.
