Can somebody put my mind at ease regarding the following:

1: I've seen a few people mention "Large Cargo" ships of around 12,000 tons. Are they modded into the game and where can I obtain them?

2: I've read some posts in which people refer to radio messages being sent to them by other vessels(Commerce Raiders?) and being kept more informed by HQ of enemy ship movements etc. How is this done? I've never had such msgs from HQ?

3: Why does BDU only ever tell you about Task Forces which are obviously too far away for you to reach?

4: In the career, my boat keeps the same number (eg. U-51) for the entire career regardless of my flotilla or boat type(very annoying). How do I rectify this?

5: Why are Passenger Liners so rare and where is the best place to come across them?

6: Why are the best convoys (lots of larger ships in them) only ever encountered at night and in **** weather?

7: Why is Lorient designed like the a dogs ****? You can't accelerate time getting out of the harbour(GRRRR...)!

8: Why is that when you try to get the range to target using the sonar ping, it ALWAYS says "no target selected"? How DO you select the target?

9: Why don't you get credited with the kill when you ram and sink a vessel(trawler etc.)?

10: Has anyone actually seen a Landing Ship(the first merchant in the recog. book) during the game? And when & where? And while we're here, what about Commerce Raiders? Or Aux. Cruisers at sea(not in Scapa etc.)?

Thanx in advance http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

If you want to get out of one of those slow harbours, you've a pretty easy way: create a route out of it, set speed about 2 knots or less, and set TC to 256 or more. Voila! You're out in no time!

I can help with some of those - you can probably find the answers to many others by checking the community FAQ - lots of good stuff in there.

1. Large cargo ships are modded in by several mods - RUB 1.44 appears to have them, as well as several others - check the "SH3 Downloads" section at the link below for a whole bunch of really cool mods:

http://u-boot.realsimulation.com/

2. Radio messages like this are modded in by several mods - I use something called "Funkmod" that has the messages in German - there are others that have them in English - I think that either the next RUB version or the next SH3 Commander version will include a German language radio message mod as well - see the link above for several radio-related mods.

3. The BdU TF sighting reports are sent out to all u-boats, in case any can get there. TFs are hard to intercept because of their high speed, so chances are you're not going to be able to get there for many of them. However, don't despair - I finally got a message from BdU about a TF that was headed my way and close enough to my track to actually intercept - it was a cool experience (saw my first carrier) although I was only able to wound something and never could find it again after the escorts forced me under and kept me down long enough to let the straggler escape http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

4. SH3 Commander and perhaps other mods allow you to alter your boat's number. It's also easy to do manually if you want - instructions for doing this manually are set forth below:

To change your boat number at the beginning of a career, you have to do it after coming back to base. Once your first patrol is over, exit the game and open the Patrols_0.cfg file (it's in the My Documents/SH3/data/cfg/careers folder in the folder with the same name as your commander). This is a simple text file, so you can open it with Wordpad or any program that will save it as-is (i.e. without changing the .cfg suffix). All you have to do is look at the 25th line of text. This is the U-Boat's number. Just change it to the number you want and save the file. Do the same with the Log_0.cfg and the Patrols.cfg files (the boat number is easy to spot). Each patrol will now recognise your new number, as will your in-game crew compartment screen and every patrol log.
For changing a U-Boat number half way through a career (e.g. if you transferred to a new boat), just alter the Patrols_0.cfg file (only the listing for the upcoming patrol) before you go on the first patrol in your new boat.

5. No idea - never seen one yet myself after 5 months - however, some folks have posted threads around here or at subsim.com forums about where to find them

6. I know it seems that way, but the first convoy I ever ran across was actually unescorted and in calm weather - I sank over 70,000 tons between torps and deck gun, and would have been more but for neutrals and dud torps. I haven't spotted that many convoys overall, and several have been while on my way home with few or no torps left, but I haven't seen any real correlation between convoys and weather.

7. There are mods available which allow you to set the time compression when near land to higher values so you can get out of places like Lorient and Bergen in less than 30 minutes real time - you can also make this change manually yourself - instructions follow:

Changing Time Compression settings: My Documents\SH3\data\cfg\main.cfg
[TIME COMPRESSION]
TimeStop=0
RealTime=1
LandProximity=32

That last number is set to "1" in stock game - change it to something higher (I use 32 as noted above) so you can use TC to get out of those ports - just be real carefull when plotting your waypoints cause you can now run aground without dropping out of TC with this setting changed.

8-10. I have no idea - never use active sonar, or ram ships, and have never seen any of those ships except occasionally in friendly ports when using some of the harbor traffic mods (see link above for some of those as well).

Good luck and good hunting!

My reply to #2:

A lot of what is referred to as radio contacts are the ship reports that show up on your map. The reports just show up on the map, we infer that they have been radioed to the sub, without them actually showing up in your radio log.

There are mods which offer more radio traffic, but I question them as they do not actually provide anything of real use in the game. You will get reports from other boats about convoy battles, messages from BdU and such, but they are all "fake." They do not correspond to events in the game. You might get a report about a sub involved with a convoy in such and such a grid. You think, "Wow, a convoy!" but it is not really there, you can't go and find it. In the end this is all just a big make believe, like when my daughter was three years old and she had her "friends" living in our dining room cabinet.

The other thing about these reports is that they come in so frequently that they knock your time compression down. If you are trying to TC your way across the Atlantic and you keep getting your TC reset every minute by these make-believe messages, it soon becomes annoying.

That being said, there are fans of these mods who don't mind these things. People who play the game at 1X appreciate the breaks in the monotony. Me, I don't care for any mod that does not actually add anything of meaning to the game.

Just my opinion.

OK, thanx, that clears up that question anyway http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I thought I was missing out on something big, but if they're fake, well http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I have seen Passenger Liners in a convoy that steams in a South-Southwesterly direction on the Southwest corner of Ireland in 1941. Other than that, no I haven't seen any at all.

As far as LST's are concerned, I have created my own mod that reflects the D-Day landings on June 6th, 1944 in the Campaign Game Mode. I€ve assembled a massive 600+ ship armada that sailed from various British ports and other points in-between. They all merged on the Normandy coast with LST's, Troop Transports, various support Merchants Cruisers and lots of Destroyers

This is easy to do if you know your way around the SH3 Mission Editor. I made the campanign.scr file so complex and so difficult that I can't even get through the initial Destroyer screen around the Northwest Coast of France, as it was back then. It still needs some work, but I€m just a beginner level mod creator, so this file is not available for download.

Since I know that you use RUb, and since the next version of RUb will include a version of the 'Funkmod' in both English and German, you'll be glad to know that this version only uses messages that are historically accurate; none of the messages refer to ships, task forces or convoys that aren't in the game; and there will only be a message every few days, so no continual interruptions of time compress.

Just thought you'd like to know, since I know you're an RUb aficionado. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks, Beeryus, good to know! Right now I'm play testing the new Improved U-boat mod, which has some radio traffic, but historical stuff. That I don't mind, as it is of historical interest. Sailing out on September 1, 1939 and in the days following there is a stream of messages telling the U-boats how to operate and what regulations to observe. I really do not mind those, just the "spam" ones.

Kaleun,

Agreed.

Beeryus,

Excellent news.
