I have released a new alternative version of my moon mod. This new one reduce the moon size to half of the original game size moon. This make the moon a bit lees impressive, but a moore real one.
Also with this version the problem with the odd outline that is seen in certain phases when no look trought binoculars and when is no full moon (I think this is a problem related with mipmaping in the original one) is fixed.

You will found it botton of the original mod in
www.ailantd.com/SHIIIMODS (http://www.ailantd.com/SHIIIMODS)

Also I have change the location of the files of all my mods, so you now sholdâ´not have any problem downloading them.

... but what I don't get is, the moon files go into

Data -> Textures -> TNormal -> tex ->

But by default, there's no moon files in there. In fact, there's no file in the SHIII directory with moon in the title at all.

So how does it work? o_O

Thanks very much - great mods!

Are you intending to do the stars as well?

Thanks

WoW! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Fantastic job with the Moon! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif

I was looking at the moon the other nite and that line on the "Darkside" was really bothering me. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Is there a way to uninstall this mod if ever needed?

I'm just assuming you remove the Moon Mod file?

Thanks for the great work! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

And mirrored: http://www.squick.org/~frederf/listed/temp/SHIIIa/ail%20small%20moon%20mod.rar

Yeah, if you want to uninstall it. Take it out of the tnormal directory and the game will use the default texture from the lowres library instead.

There are 4 different moon mods floating around now.
I'll stick with the hi-res FULL size moon mod, thank you!
A lot more detail can be seen.

Why not a quarter size one? How about an 8th size? NOT !

This is by far the best moon mod available. As an amateur astronomer I'm always a bit surprised to see the moon modelled in games as if it was much bigger than it actually is. This mod makes the moon much closer to its actual size, and it's fixed that graphical glitch that gave the moon one straight edge. Brilliant!

I also love the wake mod that Ailantd made. This guy is a top class mod-maker.

If the moon was as big as the game's full size moon, I might agree with you, but it's not. Go outside on a night when you can see the moon. Hold your thumb over it at arm's length, and you'll see how small it really is. Remember the size that it was, then go to your computer, run the game, and open the Gibraltar mission. Time compress until it's night time, then look at the moon. Hold your thumb up to the screen, again at arm's length. Notice the difference.

Then come back here and tell us how wrong you are.

Besides, Ailantd is offering this mod for free. No one is forcing you to use it. If you want a moon that's three times bigger than reality, go right ahead. There's no reason for the negative tone of your message, and there's no excuse for it.

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif What a joke ! ! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Comparing a 'screen' size and 'real' life size. OMG!

I've seen the moon so large I could put a semi-trailer 15 feet away and not cover it.

Your right finally. No one is forcing me or anyone into using anything. But if it's wrong, it's wrong.

Does the game model "atmosheric lens"? That's why sunsets are red, the sky is blue, the moon and sun are bigger on the horizon (also there's a mind trick helping that effect, it looks smaller all alone)

Yeah, right. I saw Joe versus the Volcano too, but unlike you, I recognise that it's a movie, and not real. The moon simply CANNOT grow to be that size unless something REALLY bad happens that pulls it out of its orbit.

As the resident forum troll, I'm beginning to think you have outlived your comic usefulness. It used to be kinda funny, but now it's just lame.

What the h*ll are you talking about? Who's said anything about a movie, other than you?

Try going out once in awhile to get some fresh air. Your thought process has become muddled.

It's a simple matter of relativity - relativity to the perceived sense of scale in game (on screen) and relativity to your mindset.

If you like big then use the big one.

If you like small then use that.

Relative to the scale of other graphic objects in the rendered screen (not what I see outside) I prefer the small one - I hope Ailantd does a star fix too.

That sounds... REALLY scary.

Speaking of which, imagine people living on like Titan or wherever. You look out in the sky and there's big **** off planet Jupiter in the sky, that'd scare the **** out of me... Jupiter scares me <_<

actually with a note on moon size (the real one)

IT looks bigger and small based on several factors,

firstly how high in the sky is? the extra atmosphere refracts the light makign look bigger when near the horizon than when it's over your head.

Also what latitude are you observing it from? you need to remember that the ear rotates on a tilt so seasonal observations can make the moon appear bigger to one person at a given lattitude than another as your actually further away.

Thirdly you altitude has a small effect too, especially when combined with factor 1!

I have been in many places where the moon 'appeared' bigger than at home! of course it isn't but it looked it!

Hmmm I'm still getting that white line on the Darkside of the moon, visible only w/o binos.

Was this fixed in a later series of this mod???

Looking forward to it, Ailantd. Your high-res small moon is a subtle and elegant mod, one that makes me smile every time I look through the binoculars at night.

Cheers,
