I recently started a new job a few months ago and after I had moved into my office, my boss saw my WWII plane pictures on my wall and we started talking a little about WWII planes and flight sims.

Come to find out that he has the original IL-2, but always had some difficulty with getting it to run, as well as the difficulty factor of the game compared to the CFS series. I brought him up to date on the latest happenings for the game (FB, AEP, PF merged) and steered him to the patches and helped him with stick setup, installation and general settings to get the most out of the game on his top-end 32-bit system.

The other day in a meeting, he must have overheard me whining about how my X-45 was wearing out and that the rudder rocker spring had broken (which is a biatch with V4.01m when the rudder rails to one side, lol) and that certain buttons were wearing out, intermittent throttle...etc.

Today, I worked through lunch and was busy plunking away on my PC, when my boss walked into my office and placed a brand-new X-52 on my desk!!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I said, "Wow, you finally got yourself a HOTAS setup so you can really be an online ACE." http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif He says, "No, this is for you. Consider it a gift from the company."

Needless to say, this random act of kindness made me feel good for two reasons:

1. He must think I'm doing a good job. (I'm very happy to be here BTW).

2. He wanted to make sure I knew he thought I was doing a good job. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

A big THANK YOU to my boss and I'm looking forward to installing my new X-52 this weekend. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif I'm going to send the X-45 to Saitek for refurbishment and use it as a back-up when it returns.

I just wanted to share my good feelings about this gift and provide another example that there are still people left in this world that will go out of their way, just because. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

(BTW - Another Gent in the company has an autographed painting of early P-40s or are they Tomahawks?? signed by Pappy Boyington and has offered to let me view WWII Pilot training films that he has to locate in his attic.)

I'm thinking I'll start whining about my old T-Bred XP1700 @ XP2600 (333) and maybe a Barton XP3200 will find it's way onto my desk, lol. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

My other thought is that I'll see how the X-52 compares to my X-45 and if I'm sure I like the X-52, I've decided to give the X-45 to another person in need that I've come across lately. I'm even going to ship it to his house as an early X-mas present. I figure one good turn deserves another. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Awww, all that mushiness is gonna make my eyes drip like a leakyfaucet. Although, usually I do try to be a nice guy, giving respect when it's due, I just have this EvilMcNasty streak that dislikes cheats and liars and given what I've learned about cheating in this game, I feel it is my duty to ensure all know the truth.

I guess my mama raised me right. The funny thing is, I rarely start s*h*i*t, but I'm a great finisher and quite relentless once wound up. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Well, as an X-52 is going for only about $129.99 these days, I'm thinking he best be strolling into my office with a maxed out 64-bit system with all the bells and whistles, Track-IR, three monitor view, pedals, possibly a full-up pit before I'd think about the sex part....

The Twist rudder is the part about the stick I'm expecting to have to get used to again after the rudder rocker of an X-45.

I kind of like TwistedStick though. lol

SlickStick

Well, finally got time (and the nerve, as I haven't been in the mood lately for a learning curve) to remove my X-45 and install the X-52.

PROS:

- I love the two-step trigger. Great for assigning Weapon #1 to first step and Weapon #2 or #1 and #2 to second-step.

- Better centering control than X-45.

- I actually like the twist rudder. Excellent for last-second adjustments for passing deflection shots. I used to use a twist rudder for years until I got the X-45.

- Extra slider on the throttle unit for HOTAS trim assignment.

- Overall seems more stable and more rugged than the X-45.

CONS:

- Stick spring is much easier than the X-45 and feels "loose" to me compared to the X-45. I liked the stiff spring of the X-45 stick. I'm most likely going to use a pencil eraser or two to insert between coils and stiffen-up the X-52 spring a bit.

- Cannot assign all buttons in-game without the programming S/W installed. I never used the X-45 software, as I could assign everything I used in-flight to the stick, through the Controls section. Several buttons on the throttle unit are not seen by the game.

I still have everything I need assigned without the programming software, only using the KB for engine starting and bomb sight stuff. I realize with the programming software, I could use the Mode switch and have many more assignable buttons, but for me simpler is better. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Other than that, I love the stick! The learning curve was much shorter than I thought and I am experiencing the same success (slightly better in V4.01m as I had a broken rudder rocker spring on my X-45) as I was with my X-45. I'll be mailing the X-45 out this weekend to Saitek for refurb.

Just wanted to sum up the thread and give results from my initial use of the X-52 for any potential buyers. It's a keeper! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Hehe, probably so...but given the fact that I was only going to get another X-45 for myself, this X-52 was still a good surprise.

I'll have to start dropping hints about pedals being better than a twist stick.
