Hello everyone, I am quite new to this Genre. But I picked up 1946 and i'm loving it! I'm not the greatest pilot, and I have to play with the keyboard because I have no joystick. So my plane really jerks around. For those reasons I have chosen to only play offline, im sure the game really shines online but im content with flying agiast AI atm http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The AI is tough though! They tend to ALWAYS fly faster then me unless i'm using a jet fighter or they are a bomber.
I was just wondering if anyone knew the best prop plane vs AI? It would be nice to get the edge on them sometimes :P

Hello Flyer,

Good aircraft vs AI: putting it this way will make it hard for you to get some answers, for it largely depends on the tactical situation. You can train vs AI with any aircraft in the game: if you have a slower aircaft, just start the fight with some altitude advantage (look at the advantage parameters in the Quick Mission Builder (aka QMB). AI skills will also make the fight a little different (for instance, ace AI is well known to be able to get the maximum performance out of the aircraft).

All in all you will soon find that AI are nothing special to defeat once you know its tricks, the most important for you now is to get a joystick as soon as possible (try to get a hotas like X52, CH prod,). You won't be able to appreciate this great sim with keyboard only (although it is very courageous http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif to start the game without a joystick, with a keyboard only, i think it will slow you down in the "very long" learning process).

To sum up try to fight with the faster aircraft or with altitude advantage (or both) then with practice, any AC will do. But the most important for you, is to get a joystick so that you can fly and aim smoothly.

Welcome to the forums, always nice to see new guys joining the community http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif , you will have lots of fun with this sim! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

PS if you really want to have an answer just tell us what aircraft you are fighting against.

depends on what u fly. honestly, get a jostick and join a sqd. the game will be 100 times better. get TS3 and hyperlobby also.

p40 vs a zero would be a good place to start IMO. if your in the p40 just fly straight, if your in the zero, get used to looking over your shoulder and learn to turn into the opponent.

You should definitely get a joystick and some sort of rudder device if you want to get any real enjoyment out of the game. You can get a cheap Logitech stick with a twist rudder for like $20, it's not a great stick but it's 10,000 times better than using a keyboard.

As for good prop planes, it really depends on what you're flying against. A lot of the fastest planes are not that maneuverable or are so fast that you'll fly right past slow opponents without getting a good shot on them, or they either have poor low altitude or high altitude performance. But when you're flying against the AI the main thing that gives you an advantage is being faster, so get something like Hardball's Aircraft Viewer or Il2Compare which lets you compare the max speeds of any two planes, very useful for matching up against the AI.

These are some very fast planes which are still very maneuverable and don't tend to "flip over" when you pull back hard on the stick:

La-7
La-5FN
I-185
J2M5

If you own a console such as an Xbox or Playstation, atleast plug in one of those controllers, they won't be as good as a proper joystick but far far better than trying to line up aircraft with a keyboard.

Vs several Ai banging them with attack planes, bombers, biplanes or peashooters might be a challenge http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif .

In any case.
There is no best plane because that depends on your opposition.
But I'll give ya some hints what would I do if I'm in your position.
1941 A6M2 rules the sky maneuverable and quite fast.
1942 you are in for Germans, namely Bf-109G2 it will outpace, outrun, outclimb, chew out & spit out anything you throw on it. If not available simply select Bf-109F4 which is even more agile but is slower.
1943 and we are in the year of Soviets and Germans, LA-5FNs and FW-190A6s. Seriously, those are ridiculously good planes in game. Vs Ai I would probably pick LA-5FN (but saying again, that seriously depends on oppos their number, type, situation etc.).
1944 many, many great planes. Can't really pick one but I will try. Use TA-152H that just might be the best prop plane vs Ai... it's tough accelerates fast, great guns and easy gunnery.

PS. throw Spit 25 lbs somewhere in that mix, that clownwagon works also, but hate its guns which doesn't seem to suit my style at all, love the cannons but hate their combo with .303cal LMGs http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif .

Here are some TRACKS for ya:

First track is classic that works in ANY scenario. Hug the ground and take your chances. But don't think it's easy, it is not http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif . You need to keep steady and calm otherwise you might end up doing some cr@p shooting like I did on that track exhausted & bored of all that maneuvering http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif . Planes, Bf-109G6AS and Ai Spitfire Mk.IX 25lbs (toughest late war Ai IMHO).

Second track is featuring Pony P-51D versus some late war Japanese fighters, Franks and Zekes.
I did a good job on them although some slipped away due to my lack of concentration and more due to my crappy PC http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif .

If you happen to like tracks, you can find rest of them here:

In any case... welcome and enjoy the obsession!

Thank you for the replies everyone! I had no idea everyone would be so welcoming.

I know I need to get a joystick, but my current money situation wont allow it. That's ok with me though, i'm really enjoying this sim even though I have to use the keyboard :]

Most planes tend to stay ahead of me no matter what. I did a soviet campaign and I just could not catch those Bf's! I also remember having a speed battle with a zero for well over 15 mins. I was a hellcat and I didn't even get the kill, a friendly AI zoomed past me and shot him into the next world.

I am improving though! I am learning to use the rudder, and not jerk my plane around so much. I also started using tactics instead of rushing planes hoping to get a kill.

Again, thanks for your help guys http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

You must be pretty adept already - I mean dogfighting a Zero in a Hellcat is dangerous enough already, now doing it with a keyboard and not dieing in first 20 seconds... whoah!

Anyways, yeah, Bf's are fast. Fast as hell. They keep outdistancing/outclimbing you and coming back down on you from favourable position. Just keep in mind that AI cheats a lot - it doesn't overheat, is always perfectly trimmed and uses an all-round radar so it's impossible to sneak up on one from a totally blind spot - he'll see you anyways and start evading. Considering this, you might want to pick up a somewhat better airplane to make up for this. Like La-5FN verusus non-alcoholic Bf 109s (basically all 109s up to G-6 - which even isn't unhistorical). If an AI Bf 109 G-6 (not the AS version!) still manages to outpace/outclimb you in your La-5FN (at altitudes up to 6km), then you must be doing something wrong.

You're at a speed disadvantage anyway using only keyboard. Any manouvering, even very gentle, slows you down. Using keyboard means that all your control inputs are extreme and slow you down a lot. Get a joystick as soon as you can, in the meantime choose fast aircraft whenever the option is available.
