Hi guys,

As usual my searches never seem to bring anything up so I'll ask instead.

Last night on HL I was flying several US planes but predominately in the F4F vs Jap zeros and Ki's (something like Ki anyway). Each time they'd settle in on my six and I couldn't shake them. I'd try diving, hard turns, etc all to no avail. It didn't help that i had to manually keep an eye on my opponent and there's not much rear view in the F4.

I understand each plane has it's strengths and weaknesses, so what can I do in an F4F (the one with the manual glanding gear) to beat these two planes that seem to turn much better than me?

Thx http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

in real live the Wildcats won because thier pilots fought in teams http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

btw , max dive speed of a F4F is around 860km/h IAS.
Zero -21 is ~650 , -32 is ~700. Ki43-I is ~660.
only Ki-61 is dangerous, it can go ~880 !

and keep always one rule in your minds :
dont dogfight japanese planes - keep your speed high http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

if you are low and slow in a cat, you are mostly dead.

Flying in teams is going to be hard in HL without voice comms.

What advantage does the f4f have over the ki and 0? Can it climb better, dive better, accelerate better or turn better?

I've read that it was team work and comms that won the day for the F4F, but I have neither to help me - does this mean I'm doomed and should select "ramming speed"?

Oh and Thx for your reply http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

At least you wont have to worry about cranking down the manual landing gear very often.

Hey maybe I could learn to drop fuel tanks from a great height? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

you have guns, armour, better max dive speed and better elevator response at high speed (than Zero ! not Ki43 and Ki61 ! ) , so..........

maintain altitude, watch down, if you see an japanese plane , dive, let him get a short burst and climb again - dont turn !
it is like it is - if you want join a WW1 kind furball, a cat isnt the best choice against nimble japanese fighters.

if a Zero is catching you at the same energie status, you could considering yourself shot down in the most cases ! perhaps the your very stab√¬∂e plane can safe your life - the Zero -21 has only 60 rpg in its 20mm canons - and the light MGs are not very lethal against a Cat.

Great thx, so dive on the zero, but against a Ki just bail out?

well, wich Ki ?
the japanese army called ALL all planes Ki-!
the number is important !
Ki-43 , with radial engine, dive . never climb ore turn http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
but it has very weak weopons, so it can shoot at you , very seldom it has an effect http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Ki-61 , the one with inline engine , well. not easy ! the early ones have also weak weapons , so you have a chance to escape in a dive. in reality they seldom ore never meat eachother in aircombat http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

As you said every plane has it's goods and bads...For example zeroes are much faster than the us planes and they have cannons!!! The only thing you can do to beat a zero is the loop maneuver or maybe a good "split-s" but it's quite difficult to do that. If you manage to get in the back of his tail you have to face another problem: us planes don't have cannons so you'll have to aim one of his wings. BUT be sure that when you start firing he will go down!!! If you don't do that you will have an ANGRY zero chasing your ***...

Japanese fighters are SLOWER than the Wildcat. Especially down low, not much though. A Wildcat will leave all early Zeroes and KI-43s slowly behind. At 1000 meters, all Wildcats are a lot faster at max power, so this is the best altitude to leave the fray. Also 6000 meters the Cats are way, way faster. But anything in between those two altitudes they are on par with each other. Try to remember that.
