I recall that in the days before the game was released, they were various discussions here regarding a Grand Master outfit that the player would supposedly earn over the course of the game. Is such an outfit present in the game or were we all confusing it with the option to merely dye our clothes black?

It is called altair armor. You get it by doing all the six assassin tombs.

Yes there is a grand master outfit. It's known as the armor of Altair. After going through all the tombs and collecting all the seals you can unlock it. It has the colour of red and black, resembling something like al-mualim's armor. This must mean that somewhere along Altair's life, he became a grandmaster.
