For the same reason that the Bs~109 takes 2 and sometimes 3 hits from a P39 37mm and continues to fly.

The IL2 code was derived from this software:

DOOD! i noticed the same thing last night. i hit a 109 two times with a P-63 main cannon. both times i watched the 109 spin out from the shot....then continue flying albeit a bit hurt...but its a huge cannon round. twice???

I wonder if its the same problem like Yaks, Spits,P47 that need 5x30mm rounds to get them down http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Some say the swaying side to side when using rudder is too pronounced.
I have filtered my rudder fully so it doesn't bother me that much, but perhaps this still should be reported in the bugreport so they can atleast take a look at it?

It's the same way the 190's used to be back in the day. I smacked Zen with 5...YES 5!...37mm rounds once online and although badly hurt, he kept right on flying. I was laughing because we were really duking it out for a few sorties and always have fun whether flying together or against each other.

Then I started thinking about it and thought..."hey, most BOMBERS shouldn't be able to take 5 clean, centered hits from the HE 37mm."

I realize they're not high velocity, but they ARE 37mm and had explosives.

Oh, well. I simply try to relegate its use to ultra-close range or go for the high-deflection shot as they seem to be more effective than the strikes from rearward angles.

While enjoying a lot of the aspects the patch has brought to the sim, I am disappointed that the Allied pilot is not "rewarded" for having his/her plane fully trimmed prior to engagement.

Every plane is different I suppose, but I can have a plane balanced and still be "bouncing" all over the place when using the gunsight and some rudder. Filtering you say? I would have expected better performance if the plane was already trimmed. Being more careful with the input doesn't seem to make that much of a difference either. It's almost like turbulence in that its a given regardless of what one does beforehand.

probably a k4, with wooden tail, same wood as la7 (be sure), also likely tobe flown by someone pretending tobe hero of teh luftwaffe, but his fantasy seeps into teh game code and 109 has become uber because of it.

Question. You may have to actually go back and check this because I didn't notice I was doing it till someone told me to check. How much do you use your rudder to correct your aim onto target? If its alot (like me) then you may have issues with sway...and there is a solution (that worked for me) - keep reading.

Back in 3.04 it was fairly easy as the rudder would just point the nose and you'd fire, let go of the rudder and the nose would snap back on the planes original heading (or a few degrees off). Now the plane has a more fluid feel.

My solution: Goto your control settings and check your rudder response. The default is 100 sensitivity right across the board. Try setting this to incremental levels (I'll send you my controls if you want to give it a try - PM me). This helps immensely (for me with a twist stick) with the bit of rocking back and forth that you get as the less sensitivity means less chance of overcontrolling your plane for a good shot. I noticed no excessive sway with the planes till I re-loaded the software with a unrelated graphical issue (4.0 to 4.01 install) and noticed my stick settings were reset and dang did everything shake back and forth.

It happens on some more than others...most with historical tendancies for lack of lateral stability but I think the issue is compounded by overcontrolling the rudder through the default setup.

If you can e-mail a track too: icefire (at) 3dactionplanet (dot) com and I'll see if you're getting what I'm getting or not. I'd love to see whats going on. It think this is user solvable.

You know what's also interesting?

30mm shell = 706.5ish square mm in area
37mm shell = 1074.4 square mm
20mm shell = 314 square mm in diameter.

5x30mm = 3532 square milimeters of hurt
2x37mm = 2148 " " " "
10x20mm = 3140 " " " "

this isn't accounting for length difference. 2 27mm shells probably hit harder than 10 20mm shells, as it should be. 5x30s are probably more than either, but still . . . don't quote math at me if you don't know it.

if we assume the shells length is in proportion to its width, we can calculate volumn. This number is useless by itself, but it works for comparing the three.

again, assuming length is proportional to width, we get numbers useful for comparison but useless for anything else. Thus I will not assign them units.

30mm shell = 706.5ish square mm in area - 21195
37mm shell = 1074.4 square mm - 39753
20mm shell = 314 square mm in diameter - 6280

5x30 - 105975
2x37 - 79506
10x20 - 62800

we therefore can say 5x30 > 2x37 > 10x20

as it is in the game, to my experience. . . .
