I have been wondering what the squad designations in FMB stand for, while I'm building missions...most of the time I just wing it.. but would like to know what the designations mean and what A/C types were in them....ie:

IAK
IAP
GvIAP
IAP KBF
ShAP
GvShAP
ShAP
ShAP TBF
MTAP
RAP
GvBAP
BAP
BBAP
TBAP
GvBAP KBF

Anyone actually know what these mean.. any and all help would be appreciated...

This is a good website giving details of most of the VVS units, what their designation was, where they served, and what aircraft they flew. But it's in Russian Cyrillic, so you'll need a tanslator.

That's helpful info, thanks!

In case someone didn't know, "Guard" was a honorary title bestowed on battle-hardened Soviet units (of any military branch) that excelled in a certain battle or campaign. For example, the 8th Guard Tank Army, which was one of the best units of the whole Soviet Army permanently stationed near the Fulda Gap during the Cold War, got that title after it took part in the Battle of Berlin AFAIK as part of the 1st Belorussian Front (= army group).

Also SBAP: Fast bomber aviation regiment. In the Winter War flew SB-3s.

My general understanding of the VVS hierarchy:

Air Army - "VA"; several Corps; (~1,000 or more a/c total).

Corps - Suffix "AK"; made up of 2 to 3 Divisions; (~200 to 600 a/c total).

Division - Suffix "AD"; made up of 3 "Polk"; (~100 to 200 a/c total).

Regiment (or "Polk") - Suffix "AP"; made up of 3 or 4 "Eskadrilya"; (~30 to 60 a/c total).

Squadron (or "Eskadrilya") - Suffix "AE"; made up of 3 or 4 "Zveno"; (~10 to 16 a/c total).

Flight (or "Zveno") - a 3 or 4 a/c group (Vic or 2 "Para"?).

Element (or "Para") - 2 a/c (lead and wingman).

So on that basis the Modern day RAF is a Division rapidly on its way to becoming a Regiment.......... Makes sense to me http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I glanced at the Osprey on Lavochkin fighter aces a couple of days ago and was surprised to read that early IAE's were only 10 planes and IAP's were only 20. I'm assuming that there were 3 x 3 a/c vic's in an eskadrilya and 2 eskadrilya's to a regiment at the beginning of the GPW.

As the War went on, IAP's rose to 30 planes - i.e. 3 eskadrilyas. I'm guessing that an eskadrilya then became 2 x 4 a/c flights with a command para.

Anyone know anything about this subject? It reminds me of Soviet armoured organisation, which was always much smaller than equivalent Allied and German units.

The numbers I give should be considered very rough estimates; I can't even remember what my sources were. I was trying to get a handle on the VVS equivalents to the RAF, Luftwaffe, and US organization. I do recall reading that often VVS units were grossly under supplied, especially early in the war (for obvious reasons).
