I have been enjoying flight sims ever since they were first created for the home PC. I have to confess to being a big fan of Microsoft's various flight sims, but for some reason have never got round to trying IL2.

Until now. IL2 is by far the best flight sim I have ever flown bar none. Absolutely incredible. I started of with IL2 FB and have just added AEP. Are there any flight sims coming in the near future that are going to better this? They've got a very tough act to follow.

Better than this one? Battle of Brittain, developped my Maddox Games, new graphical engine, planes more detailed, physics engine more complex. It should be the first of a series intended to cover all of ww2.

Welcome and enjoy. It puzzles me how often newcomers already have MS CFS3. It must be the way MS is able to promote its products on the web and in the stores.

If you do a web search on "flight simulator" combined with "WWII" or "combat" you will not find IL2 immediately. And if you go into a shop still CFS3 has a more prominent position than FB/AEP even though it is older and not as good. A colleague of me actually had a hard time finding the IL2/FB game - all shops had AEP but not the game.

So Oleg and the gang are great game developers but for marketing Ubi has a way to go. The big portion of the market that are not fanatics or very well informed will tend to end up with MS CFS3 first. Hopefully they will buy IL2 next.

Nice to have you around.

IT's never too late to play FB, cause it's a long live products. At least from the day i start with the original il2 til now. In between this days i play and stuck with other games but still i go back to play FB.

Or maybe his join date is for the UBI site, not necessarily for FB. He could have been playing other UBI games all this time.

Anyway, it's no help in store presence either that the CFS series has all these 3rd party products lining the shelves too. From the Abacus and Strategy First add-ons in the US, the JustFlight add-ons in the UK, etc. They just overwhelm the few boxes of IL2, FB, and AEP that are on the shelves.

In the movie library in my town they do have a copy of Forgoten Battles for rent, but they don't have the MS FS.

They do have the Star Wars series, though.

tenmmike - nothing gets past you does it? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Yep, joined the UBI forums in 2001 (I new nothing of IL2 back then)

True what others have said here - IL2/FB/AEP software is usually buried under all the MS products in most stores. Crazy as it's far superior to those sims.

IMO the thing that honestly turned a lot of American people off with IL2 in the beginning was the fact that it was an Eastern sim and didnt have the planes everyone was familiar with. Plus when it first came out it needed a decent rig to run right. I considered it when it first it the shelves but I had a PII 233 with a 32M video card and so I put it back on the shelf. Once I upgraded for CFS3 I ran into a guy who suggested it and so I got it and I have been hopelessly, shamelessly hooked ever since. FB is just MORE intense than IL2 was/is. For better or worse many people tend to stick with what tey are familiar with. We have had an influx of diehard CFS guys over the past year. I see seceral old names from the Zone that I was flying with and against 2 and a half years ago. FB is a great sim. The FMs,DMs,AI the whole 9 is just off the frickin hook. Sure it could be better... anything can always be better.. but right now the bar has been raised. I heard CFS4 is coming but I was burned by MS with CFS3 so it would take a crowbar, a hypnotist,a million dollar bribe and a hElluvs good product to make me jump ship. Even then...Id be a visitor....... and Pacific Fighter is coming soon too??!!?? PFFFTTT!!!! Carrier landings, Corsairs, Helcats, Kates and Georges.... The Marshalls.... YEAH baby... you will be here for a looooong time. I bet you are still having the jaw dropping moments.... LMAO.. I still do too occasionally ... every other time Im just going "D@MN this sim is great!! D@mn this sim is great!! D@MN this sim is...... Hi,

I imagine the main reasons why Il-2 was largely ignored were:

a. The developer.
b. The box design.
c. Initial difficulty.

i.e. Most people has neither heard of nor seen them before. You might notice that they stick a P51 on the box now; I wonder how many more people even get as far as *picking the box up* now just because of that?

I downloaded it is a demo, ages ago, but it wouldn't run on my twerpy P200 machine. Purchased CFS3, returned it, then purchased Il-2 with the refund and never looked back.

Cheers,
Norris

About the original box design (for IL-2), IIRC when UBI released the game the box looked like it was part of the "Commander Series" (was it ?) of games (i.e. Luftwaffe commander, Destroyer commander, etc.) with the gold band on top.

Having had a less than pleasurable experience with the "Commander series", I thought IL-2 was more of the same, so passed over it at first. But a co-worker gave me his used copy and I was forever hooked. Just shows you "you can't judge a book ...and so on" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif .

I stumbled across it by complete accident. I was going to buy CFS eventually, but I saw "IL-2" on the cover, and knowing a bit about Russian planes, I grabbed it. I've been spreading the word to whoever will listen.

It's probably the best word of mouth game ever, wouldn't you think?

I had to upgrade my computer before buying a flight sim. After I did I compared IL2 with its competiton. I remember the first time I saw IL-2 in the stores I knew what airplane it was but I thought the IL-2 was the only plane flyable. After I purchased IL-2, FB and AEP I have been very happy. Can't wait for the new patches and upgrades.

Night_Sniper, glad that you finally found the Il-2 series! As others have said, not perfect, but what flightsim ever is?

One thing I can say about it, from the first demo, it has never failed to run properly, no crashes! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif All the patches (a gadzillion of them it seems) have been free, and most contained add-on planes, as well.

I came over from mainly EAW, and while that was (and still is) a GREAT WW2 flightsim, when I ran the demo, I was hooked!

Just a great sim, no doubt about it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/heart.gif

I got the game the same way. I saw it when I was looking for CFS3 at local stores, and I even went as far as to pick up the box[I had seen it reviewed in Air and Space] but I went for CFS3. A few days latter I picked up IL-2 with the refund.

The last flight sim I played was European Air War back in '99-2000. Last November I was looking for add on software for my brother (He plays Flight Simulator 98) and stumbled across it on a Google search. Read some reviews and lurked here on the message boards. Voila! Guess what was under the Christmas tree!
