View Full Version : The GWX First Impressions Thread

I thought it a good idea to concentrate all our first impressions of GWX in one thread to avoid many scattered threads and posts. Whilst not all forum members will use it, it's fair to say a lot of us have been waiting with baited breath for it's release...so when it's here.. post your comments, good and bad, praise and questions here. At time of posting, one mirror for download is up! Christmas is coming early!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

On the Subsim forums I was definitively informed that the GWX mod will be out

any day now.....

That's about the extent of the data. Last I heard they were uploading to mirror sites....

But that of course just means more

any day now......

I am very flusterred waiting for this Mod as are many..... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif

The manual is large and shows many improvements.
Let's hope the code is up to the anticipation generated...

Just had a brief look throught he manual- WOW this is going to be a brand new game, I can't believe how much work has been involved with this mod. I really think the modders have done a truly wonderful piece of work, and that's just going on the appearance and content of the manual. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Is anyone informed as to where the mod will actually appear and be downloadable? I know several mirror sites are to be involved but where and what are they?

A lot of folks are going to be swamping the places so would be nice to know what sites are involved.

If this mod lives up to expectations, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ubi hiring a few "work at home" developers. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

S-Katze, that would be nice, but I doubt it. Did they hire any of the modders for SH4? They'd be asking for trouble if they did. I can see the scenario where they hire some modders, such as the folks who are producing Grey Wolves, and then tell them to cut out this or that feature in order to hurry the release date. They'd have an employee rebellion on their hands. No, they use the same people that all the game companies use, underpaid and overworked slave wages who do not have the luxury of defying their bosses, since they need that next paycheque to feed themselves and their families.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I've started a new career '39, in U-108, type IXB.

-menus look cool and fresh.

-looong load time (longer than GW1.1)

-better prestations ingame than in GW1.1, runs a lot smoother

-Weather has its impact on uboat. Targeting in heavy seas was difficult, I still got my first shot right http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

-flying elmo boats!

-nice new sounds & textures

I'll be off now, have fun everyone<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Just a heads up. Maybe i'm wrong but i tested gwx and found out that destroyers can now "hear" you at 3 knots. You have to go down to 2 or maybe even 1(not sure). I was running away from one at ahead slow and he followed me for like 5 hours. He was not pinging me or anything, didnt even have depth charges, but he followed me. So you wanna watch out. That rig for silent running order is not effective anymore seeing as it only lowers your speed to 3 nots http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

anyways, that was my first "discovery" although i could be all wrong. And well, i dont know if i like that change or not so i wont say its good or bad, time will tell.

Was lucky that the downloads of these
files went smooth.

My first impressions...

I don`t know to tell.

I have done one mission in the beginning of 1940.
Got 2 large merchants and 2 destroyers.

After that i got jumped by other 2 destroyers
who found me in the dark when i went silent running....

I was able to load up my old career (and laugh at those of little faith), continue it, and was pretty impressed so far. Nothing all that different, that I've noticed--a lot more ship types, which is good, and a lot of cosmetic changes (is it just me, or is the guy at the hydrophone station WAY too shiny?).

The red loading bar hangs at about 95% done in the loading screen to let me start my first patrol. Mmmm. Not using SHCommander for the trial run but will do when all is bedded in. Perhaps I'm inpatient but to me it seems to hang, as opposed to taking a while to load. I might be wrong.

Is it just me, or did the GWX modders decide to remove the autoaim feature? I get within 1000 meters, 90 angle off the bow, only to find my torpedoes hit the exact same part of the ship every time, so long as 'Lock' is hit....no more precise shots.

Kaleun1961
12-16-2006, 06:56 PM
I would think that a deliberate action on the part of the modders to make the experience more realistic. After all, real life skippers had no magic device that said "shoot here." You don't have to shoot at the locked point; you can unlock the scope and point it at the part you hope to hit. Once you have your target data input to the TDC, it keeps an updated solution. Swivel the scope from the locked point and fire when ready. If all goes well, the torpedo should hit fairly close to the aim point.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Yes, but real U-Boat skippers were aware they weren't the only U-Boat in the North Atlantic. There are certain issues of realism that can't be fixed, unfortunately.

In any case, I'm going to keep looking for a way to turn it back on...I sort of wish they had mentioned it in the manual, since it was still active in the previous version of GW. I'll admit that I was spoiled by the feature, but lining up the perfect shot in SH3 was one of the things I most enjoyed.

Let me know if you've got a similar case with your copy of GWX...I tried different careers, and found that it didn't help. If it's not a problem of my specific installation, then there should be a way to turn it off.

You have to go as low as two knots to be silent, no more silent running cloaking device. And go as deep as you can, or you are toast! (Bolds are more important than ever)

The outboard download integrity checker was a very nice touch.

Only complaint about the mod is the inboard mods don't have thier own readmes so you can evalute their usefulness more easily. and not all of them are in the expansion manual.

But on the great side :

It puts the down periscopes inside their protective housings +++
(stock game and GW1.1a they stick up a bit)

And the existing campaign seems to work
(test one thing at a time) ++

Nice graphics ++

Don't know if it comes with the res fix like GW did, but it still works at higher resolutions. ++<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Only one word to describe it really - Awesome

I'm amazed that the game could look and sound so good - I hope the SHIV Devs are paying attention, in my opinion the guys that brought us GWX should be on the dev team for SHIV.

At least we would get a product that is finished properly.

Anyway, GWX looks amazing and the boat actually responds far better than before, the extra ships are mind blowing - take a look through the recog book - shed loads of possible targets to sink. I can't wait to start a new career.

I do like the menu movie bit - actual footage WOW!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I'm with everyone else. You guys did a great job with this mod. I am astonished and my fiancee upset, because I've spent more time with SHIII today than her, but I'll make it up later with some roses and wine. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif But really, this was an awesome job. I've had no problems with it and I don't expect to either. Now that the Americans have entered the war I have some new ships to sink.

Good luck and Good hunting!!

Downloaded, installed, played.....WOW!!!

Very impressed with neat touches applied - neutral ships showing lighs at night (never seen that before), new ships and skins, some superb secondary explosions - I took out a Pyro freighter with only 10 105 rounds, with secondaries going off more frequently than shell hits. Attached are a few shots to whet the appetite...

Thanks, RJ!

Yes, it takes alot of time, but like anything else it goes faster when you have done it some times before. I guess it takes 3-4 hours to make one. (Besides playing)

I use Ulead Videostudio 9 to edit footage collected with fraps. (Windows Movie Maker is a free option)

The music is generally found in soundtracks, and most are made by Hans Zimmer. That guy can whip up some epic stuff.

Actually, the music is the most time consuming part, to get it to fit the footage, and even the coolest looking movie looks pale and boring if the music is wrong, so thats the hard part.

Give it a go! (And just ask if youre stuck)

I'm mid patrol so far with 92K of tonnage racked up - you will notice that the tonnage values have been extensively changed for the better, so expect lots of 100K patrols.

Secondary hits are something to see - they sound and look like fireworks going off. The deck & flak gun sound effects are very cool.

Great Screenies Goose!

Two initial impressions: Firstly the damage model does indeed seem to have been tweaked in our advantage because first enemy vessel I came across was a Pyro - which I depatched using the deck gun only - it really didn't take many hits at all to make it blow (waterline shots only of course) - and then how it went up! oooh PRETTY!

Could be a late night methinks!

Secondly, and only a minor criticism, it takes an AGE to load, and I'm running 2gb PC3200 ram, but that I can live with - it's worth the wait!

I have a question - where are the screenshots held? I've looked around the SH3 folders but can't seem to find them http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Installed SH3 with patch 1.4 late yesterday evening and tested the XXI in the single mission (1944 and 1945) to make sure the propulsion worked; GWX was installed today. Ran the XXI single mission and the propulsion worked here too- this was not the case after installing GW as the XXI's props wouldn't turn no matter what I did with the engine room staff, so this bug has been sorted (proving once and for all that when it comes to ships, ONLY engineers matter http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ). Haven't had time to do anything else really, but sorting this bug alone makes GWX well worth installing. Thank you, GWX team! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/11.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Cheers RJ

I agree with some of these ships, the Pyro may have had it's GRT cut down a bit but that is made up for the easy kill - took me 15 HE rounds to kill one. Also aim towards the front with your fish and you will get satisfying results too.

The screenshots should be in the SH3 directory, had no problems there myself.

I'm now running the game at 1280x1024 - and it looks so good

I have the same speed RAM as you RJ but I think the mod takes about the same time to load up as with the NYGM TW and GW mods, although the front loading screen seems a bit quicker though!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

My first impressions.

I will start with the negative things about GWX

1) Would have been lush if we had an option for marker on or off. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

2) Time compression. I have noticed that I cannot really exceed 256 for general ocean going cruising or else it gets all jittery and slow, but hey, I can deal with that. Those are the only two flaws.

So I am back in my 'dugout canoe!' U-1. But when I return to dock she will be U-3 as that was my first U-boat when I started playing SH3 stock. I patrolled my square, not a thing. So I decided as its 1939 and radar is no longer and issue for me I decided to go to HArtlepool. There I saw a nice stationary medium merchant. Formally known as a C2.

I put 3, yes, 3 direct hits into him. And he still floats! So feeling a bit disheartened I turned around to leave before sunup. Next thing I hears the Boatswain from Das Boot shout and a cheer! The navigator reports, "shes going down!" Oh good I thought. I noted in stock game 3 Torpedoes would have broke a c2 in half, unless I was not hitting a vital spot, but hey, it sank anyways! Even if it was not in spectacular fashion.

On my way out I encountered a Trawler. Had to close range on him due to his weaving about the first torpedo which was a perfect shot missed his screws by a matter of feet. So I am now on my way back to port currently dodging an armed trawler nearby.

The weather alterations are very very noticable, and my fuel consumption has been right up. Which is alarming as IIa U-boats don't exactly carry a lot of fuel. I am also loving how much quieter the boats are submerged. The Way the boats look too is very very good.

I love the grey underbelly, the green was ok, but I like grey better. I'm also looking forward to meeting my first milk cow wherever it may be. Question: ARe supply ships and Milk cows marked on the navigation map? And does re-supplying there count as a patrol ended?

On a more frustrating note, I have gone from the sports car of pre-XXI Uboats, the supercharged VIIc to a IIa, which, at flank speed, is only 1 knot quicker than my old U-95 was at 1/3. Its going to take a bit of adjusting, wish me luck. Because I have quite some time before I will be able to jump back into a VIIc again. And don't even get me started on the IIa's useless submerged endurance, what kind of battery is that thing using?! a single duracell double A?!

But I like Grey Wolves, I need to get used to it, which is why I am going back to beginning. But I like it.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

As part of the german contingent here I fee; I must give my first thoughts.

in a word.

WUNDERBAR!!

What I like most is the new variety of ships and the addition of american capital ships. The new radio traffic is cool too. As is the reduction from the old GW where every 5 minutes a U boat wold report the sinking of neutral vessels. I started all an all new career not knowing how the existing ones would have held up and am looking forward to what lies in store with future campaigns. SH3 is finally the game it should have been out of the box. I couldn't even imagine playing the game OOB anymore. As for the loading time. I read during the loading time so it's no big deal. It takes no more than 5 minutes for the mission to load.

http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Rather pleased with it so far. Still trying to assess the 8hr fatigue model I selected, but it seems manageable. I started a whole new '39 career out of Wilhelmshaven, and while approaching the English coast I managed to bag a freighter/passenger.

I initially suffered from the black sky bug, something I never had actually seen before. I found and applied the fix, and all seems well.

I am impressed with the new hydrophone sounds. Quite realistic, I think.

Things I have noticed:
Interesting ship modelling/behavior in harbors.

If the use of 16km atmosphere is said to have reduced frame rates, I have not noticed much.
The poorest rates are in harbors, but still reach 21+. I am running ATI tools at full quality. No need to reduce settings in my view. Average rates are considerably higher.

As far as I am concerened, frame rates are going to directly correllate to the quality of one's platform. So if GWX developers have chosen to be more agressive in what is displayed, then they are simply operating in anticipation of improving platforms. There is no point in grumbling about frame rates.
Anyway, ATI tools or similar tweak utilities can help most everyone reach a satisfactory level of performance.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Let me know if you've got a similar case with your copy of GWX...I tried different careers, and found that it didn't help. If it's not a problem of my specific installation, then there should be a way to turn it off. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>What is Bit Torrent?

Nothing better than a Wiki to provide you with an answer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I found large convoy and inside two ... submarines http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
http://img472.imageshack.us/img472/7347/l5tu4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
I was not sure enemy or ally (part of escort) so fired torpedo but she didn't sink
http://img472.imageshack.us/img472/2826/l6jv1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
after a while luckily I sunk Norwegian Whaling Factory ship
http://img472.imageshack.us/img472/1748/l7bh0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
and at the same time submarine opened fire (on rough sea !) against Black Swan

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/7294/l2la1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Both sunk so I could hunt more effective

Have you already seen (GWX) other U-boot's in convoys ?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Mariuszj - did you change the settings to get your flak gunner on deck in that weather?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Judging by the model of the sailor crewing the gun it's one of the AI subs.

Well I find GWX does add a new dimension to SHIII- I espacilly have fun with the new deck gun system and the boat rocking in stormy weather.

And Pyro ships burn and explode purdy.

Yes, there are Wolf Packs in GWX. They fire deck guns, flak and virtual torpedoes on enemies.

Really fun to attack a convoy, and suddenly get help.

I found a tanker on my first gwx trip out, it blew to bits after several well-placed deck gun rounds.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Get this! While raiding Poti (in the Black Sea), I actually sank a Small Merchant with 1 Deck Gun round. It seemed to hit ammunition stored on deck, which caused the impressive GWX specific secondary explosion fireworks display, followed by a "She's going down!" message - even stock never sunk a ship after just one round.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Really? That by itself sounds very enjoyable--unfortunately, seeing how you can't really organize communications between boats, it's just a matter of being at the right place at the right time, and the same being the case for another U-Boat.

Though, given that they're inevitably surfaced, they probably don't last too long against convoy escorts.

Other AI u-boots can sink some small ships and destroy escort. I saw three sunk small cargoships and damaged two DD. Hunting in much easier http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Ever noticed after a torpedo impact, the searchlights switch on immediately, right on your boat?

Let's ask to get a mode to allow you to use your flak gun to exinguish these searchlights...

That would be a useful mode and interesting...

Do you like getting Depth charged in GWX. Didn't last long after this! Much more intersting GWX than stock or any other mods!
