Bearcat, this new thingy cost me close to $2,500.00, and I never got it for any other reason than to play FB. Sure, I am playing other games that would have run fine on most machines, but this is the only piece of software that really makes me breathe this heavy. Therefore, I must have good FR's.

It is the only game that I play all the time and yes it has cost me a ton to play it!!!!!

Easily over a thousand with PC components which otherwise wouldn't be needed.

I'm already saving for BoB ...and I think I'm pathetic.

Bear, I don't even really want to think about it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
If I do I may laugh or cry, not too sure
And I am holding off any more spending til BoB. Pathetic huh?

Also saving for BOB. My rig aint going to be up to scratch for that. It struggles at times now.

Do I update my car or get an all singing & dancing rig?

Rig of course. if the car stutters I call a mechanic. If my rig stutters I get shot down.

Not a lot in comparison to other hobbies. Yes, I've spent a lot upgrading to run FB well, but not just FB. And it's only done every 2-3 years or so. Compare that with what I've spent on Flying and Scuba diving and it pales into insignificance.

I wouldn't join any club that would have ME as member!

Same here. Never have I spent so much on a `game`.
The things I`ve done for IL2:

1. Bought XP. Mr Gates should be greatful to Oleg, I was om Windows 98 before and intended to stay that way. I`d ignored every other version till I saw proof that IL2 was actually faster with it.

2. Lots of better ram.

3. New Motherboard.

4. New soundcard.

5. New headphones.

6. CD Burner (to save skins packs, etc )

7. CPU coolers, fans.

8. PC care stuff (so I can fix it when it conks out....

9. New joystick (recently) and am looking for rudder pedals now.

It adds up to a lot and I`m NOT going to add up how much... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Soon... Very soon....

When I actually stop and think, it's quite scary.

A flight stick, new graphics card, new motherborad, processor and RAM. A RAM upgrade, new headphones, new monitor and TrackIR (2nd hand)... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/53.gif

With a bit of creative accounting I can roll my FB expenditure into more general "Aviation" expenses which include Cessnas and the like. Compared to that sort of thing, new hardware looks like awfully good value http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Between Hardware and software, much more than what you have listed on the poll. I use it not just for IL2 but other sims/games as well even though IL2 take up 80% of that time.

I bought a computer so i could play il2fb, so il2 cost me about 300,000 yen including track ir. Luckily my girlfriend bought me a ch setup so i didnt have to delay paying back my student loan another few years.

03-10-2004, 06:11 AM
I voted for 4-9 hundred, but that does not reflect the time spent as well, 3+ hours per day. I spend far less than that or I would loose my girlfriend as well.

03-10-2004, 06:17 AM
About $600 in upgrades. (Spent twice that to upgrade for Falcon 4 when it came out.)

I can't count what I've spent as I had the pc I'm running now before I got into FB. As it is, it's running fine but hopefully I'll soon be building my own new computer from scratch. It all depends on how much the wife lets me get away with and keeps her hands off the extra money I make mowing lawns during the summer. Every little bit helps when you're retired. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

But there is one thing you forgot to figure in Bearcat99. The monthly cost of Broadband, DSL or Dialup that everyone uses to play online. I went from 22.00/month to 45.00/month just to get Broadband so I could fly online and get all the download goodies faster. It was well worth it but the "Warden" had a fit at first. Now she's calmed down just a wee bit and calls the pc my "girlfriend". http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

So I voted 400 to 500 for now.

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gifSeeing as how I just got started, my answer is in projected figures. I know I have to upgrade my controller. Bigger CPU, more RAM. I have a monthly budget for my pc entertainment. If I choose to use it for software/games or simply hardware upgrades, so be it. While to some it would seem to be a substantial amount, I've exceeded it a few times since IL2 was released.

My list is similar to others':

1. New CPU (from 1.5 P4 to 2.8 P4)
2. New vid card
3. TrackIR
5. Flight chair
6. many additional costs that could be associated with it, but likely would have been realized with or without IL2.

Aviation, and in particular combat aviation has been a dream of mine since I was shortly out of diapers. Bearcat, I think I told you that the first model I ever built was the old Batman jet from Aurora in 1966? I was four years old at the time. I can not put a price on something that is for me priceless. ~S~

About 1 week after I first played with il-2 demo 1999 I started hardware upgrading, and never stopped... on the shopping list has been:

more ram then later again more ram
two graphics cards
three joysticks
usb hub
pci usb card
ch pedals
two trackir's
big monitor
history/aviation books

Certainly the cheapest part of the il2 get-up is the software!

I've built four computers after realizing my little 900MHz Celeron eMachines rig was incapable of upgrade; I've gone from 250Mb RAM to 1Gb RAM, I went from the basic Logitec Wingman to Sidewinder Precision 2 to Logitec Force 3D to the complete CH Products rig, I went from m-board sound to Audigy 2 + surround sound speakers, TrackIr, and I'm giving serious thought to Laser eye surgery...HEEEELLLLPPP!!!

Watch out guys for ordering from the States. With the new regs they have to hire a broker to handle the shipping and YOU are responsible for the fees.

Let's see...
new graphic card in 2002 : Ti4600 - 480 eur
2x512 SDRAM : 180 eur
new CPU P4 2.4 Ghz : 250 eur
X-45 80 eur + 12 pp
Monthly subscription at : Airforces Monthly , Combat Aircraft , Fly Past for 10 eur/month
Cable internet for 49.99 eur/month
Home networking kit to play with friends including cables , tols and soo on for about 200 eur
over 20 model replicas WW2 plane from which I've finished only 5 approox 100 eur
... and many more.
Do I regret? No way!Doo my wife complain? Not at all , sh knows that I'm an aviation nut and she loves to see me happy. Same way for me regarding her hobbies (xcluding shopping of course).Do my boyz complain? Not at all , they are too small ,although they are very curious and start scanning the ceiling when I do a F3 flyby in the Jug.
This sim opened a hidden thing in me.Didn't knew I've had this in me although I feel like having this "something" since I was born. Make no mistake , I've played other games regarding WW2 (EAW,BoB,CFS2 etc) but I was never interested in the historical events surrounding the action of a certain plane type. I knew by heart almoost all soviet & german planes in WW2 , yet sad that no sim had them in a pleasant way. Same for the allied ones.Well , here CFS , EAW did a good job at the time.
I sleep less today because I can't go to sleep knowing that our troops need us badly around Sevastopol. I don't feel like eating knowing that enemy was spotted by scouts. Amm I nuts? Could be , but I have a helluva fun!Beside , I made virtual friends and enemies , I browse forum over forum looking for that "something".
IL2-FB stays in my start menu , you turn on my computer FB starts immediately.Oh , and BTW , since I was doing that , I had to buy another comp for my wife , so add an extra 700 eur to the list above.

LOL.. I was conservative with my figures on purpose..LOL.. Since I started FB..just FB..not IL2.... or the CFS upgrades... I have gone through:

Windows XP

4 Case fans...
One CPUFan & Heatsink
Maxtor 120GHD

One Computer Chair
@$300 at Borders-Books & Mags...sim or aircraft related)

and stuff I forgot......
Im saving for BoB so I figure I should be good at least until it comes out. FB or FB related stuff is 90% of my computing. I have spent countless hours researching and learning about PCs so if I figured the time the expense would be even greater.

Just the question I've been waiting for...let's see- First I bought a whole new computer ( my old one was hopeless) to play Il-2 ( the original) & oh yeah to do valuable work in my profession ...cost =about $2000.00 with scanner printer etc.
2.)Il-2 Sturmovik- Ithink that was $40.00 or so
3.)New Force feed back joystick about $125.00( & worth every penny - I think all the springswere about to go in whatever my joystick was...)
4.)Another $40.00 or so for Forgotten Battles ( it was so important for me to see
Leningrad from the air before I die!)
5.)Upgrade in memory from 512Mb to 768Mb to stop those maddening freezes , locks & shut downs over the lovely city of Leningrad in that dog of a Focke Wulf...
6.)Innumerable visits by my computer expert to try to figure out why game continues ( to this day ) to occasionally stop operating just after a very successful mission & theefore I don't get credit for same( needless to add this never happens when one of my drunken AI flight mates runs into me just after take-off or a lucky flak strike blows me to smithereens!)Cost / I don't even like to think ,but certainly pushing past $700.00 including heavier duty cooling fan & other gee=gaws.
6.)Aces add-on- I just gotta see the Bf-110 over Berlin & the P-38 over whatever island chain that is in the Pacific -$30.00
European add-on -purchased but not here yet- I'm not too sure what this will add but I don't want to miss anything!- 30 euros - not sure of current exchange...
7.)Time spent on internet figuring out how to download patches , skins, additions ,etc. Reloading evrything after somehow uninstalling everything... how do you measure such a cost in time - I don't even want to think...
8.)Watching movies from site ( see above)
9.)Cost of whithering looks from my wife you just cannot get it& wonders how I can waste so mch time when i could be working or repainting house or going out with her...Well just how do you vlue a relationship anyhow?
10.)Cost of playing the greatest flight sim ever with all its flaws & costs-immmeasurably FUN!

03-10-2004, 09:56 AM
Most of the voters are forum regulars. What results would you expect from all FB simmers, those who are casual, spare time fliers as well as the dedicated simmers who post here?

No question, this is an addictive hobby. But, forum-visiting, mission-building, skin-making and reading account for a big chunk of the time it takes for me...as well as flying and fighting. Now that I think about it, maybe I should re-vote.

There is no 'way' of winning;

I'm tighter than a gnat's chuff so I haven't event spent 200 quid inclusive of my copy of FB.

Notable purchases since Il-2, though:

RAM 256MB->512MB

Everything I've done as far as upgrading my computer in the last year has been for the sole purpose of playing this game, but my wife doesn't know that.

Lets see, about four years ago I started out with a 600MHz AMD, 256MB RAM, 32MB NVidia, 30G HD, Windows 98, MS Sidewinder joystick. Then I got the IL2 Demo and fell in love with the game. I knew I would need to upgrade eventually, but for the time being I could still run IL2 without too much trouble.

I knew I would be incabable of playing FB with my old system so I finally bit the bullet and upgraded last year. Now I have a 2.66GHz P4, 512MB 3200RAM, 128MB ATI 9800, Dual HD-my old 30G and a new WD 80G 72K cache, Windows XP Pro, 52 CD-RW, 550W power supply, new case, etc. Essentially I gutted my whole system except for the DVD drive. I figured it cost me around $1200.

As soon as I get caught up on some of my bills, I plan on getting another 512 of Ram, a bigger cooling fan, a new FFB stick, maybe some peddles, and definately Track IR.

For the most part I could have run the majority of my other games on my old system, but I had to upgrade to play FB. I don't know what I'll do when BoB comes out. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif Maybe I'll at least upgrade to a newer video card. I'd like to completely upgrade again in about 3 years, but this time I think I'll also go for a liquid cooled system.

This game has cost me precisely $5,295.27, from countless PC upgrades and improvements... I first got Il2 Sturmovik when we got our 1.3ghz Celleron PC... This was of course after we upgraded from a 486dx (lmao... used it for 10 years, never has failed)... But now I use a AMD Athlon 64 and 2 ghz of ram... It has been by far the best spent $5,000 ever... Thank you UBI, you have boosted the computer hardware market by 29% http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

03-13-2004, 11:38 PM
I use my computer for more than gaming but IL-2 was always up there for necessity-therefore it's difficult to ascribe all of the money spend on the computer, the sound system, and the extras (joysticks etc.) to ONLY IL-2 (fb and ace)-but if that's the case I've upraged mobo's 3 times from when the il-2 demo came out (was on a KT133 biostar board with 512mb PC133, and a duron 750-the only thing I still have from that rig is the pioneer dvd playerhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif).

So if you include the $ spent on two major upgrades and a third on in progress the total is about $4000:

The computer runs to an dedicated hometheatre system that's discrete 6.1 using TOslink (cost about $3000 excluding the TV)-computer and monitor about $1000 (home built by my company)-I consider the software negligable except that IL-2 is directly reponsible for me spending (in about a week) $250 on PS 8 (through a buddy).

New computer - 800.
More RAM - 40
New video Card - 100
Joystick - 100
Rudder Pedals - 100
Track IR - 75
Cockpit lamps (- genuine WW2 jobs - very nice) - 100
WW2 Cockpit gauges (for a bit more atmosphere) 100 (I'm working up to a working wartime cockpit clock but boy, they are expensive)
Books, WW2 maps, pilot's notes, etc - Rough guess, 400

Not to include models, aviation art, etc I have bought as a consequence of developing this interest.

I regard this as a mid-range spend - haven't gone for top range video card, haven't upgraded CPU, etc.

I've given up pretending that my main PC is for anything other than FB. It's liberating when you can abandon the notion of 'workspace' and configure your virtual cockpit properly http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
