View Full Version : Why do people use the acronym "OKL" to describe the Luftwaffe?

On HyperLobby, and throughout the FB world, I always wince when the Luftwaffe is referred to as "OKL".

Fess up, which doofus came up with that?

OKL stands for Oberkommando Luftwaffe, that is, Luftwaffe High Command. These are *desk surfers*, guys. Not the pilots, but the command officers and administrators. Pencil pushers.

What's wrong with "LW" for Luftwaffe, anyway?

Wouldn't know, but you forgot the "der" between "Oberkommando" and "Luftwaffe" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

OKL also means the forces in it's command, not only the HQ.

Technically true, but you just don't refer to a "Luftwaffe Bf109" as a "Luftwaffe High Command" Bf109", do you?

It's a misnomer, pure and simple.

No I wouldn't say so in english or my own language, but germans did.

In german military jargon OKL means also Luftwaffe in general just like OKW means also Wermacht in general. Report could state AOK (Armee Oberkommando) Norwegen (for example) does something - it means that the troops in the command of army commander/HQ "Norway" does something, not that the commander himself does something. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's a TLA. It _has_ to be better that way.

!!!!!!! I always thought OKL was a squad.

Like when someone says "Need more OKL pilots in VOW room 1".
