It says here

http://www.uboat.net/men/hardegen.htm

That he sunk 10 ships off the US East coast in 1942.

It mentions in the section on deck guns that he had great success with it in this patrol.

What I want to know is, how many of those 10 ships (57,170 tons) did he sink with a deck gun?

It doesn't seem to say. All of them?

I can't say for sure but in general ships were very rarely sunk by deck gun only, it was far too dangerous because many merchants were armed later or called in help.

I have no idea how many he got

though i do know during the us coast hits the u-boats did some very werid things

shooting tankers up with deck guns included, once i think famsouly within sight of a beech with people standing watching

(atlantic command admiral for the US was an anglophobe and did'nt belive us when we said convoys matter)

Not sure of the exact number, but I'm reading the book 'Torpedo Junction' (About the US coastal U-Boat War) at the moment and it mentions that Hardegen was more prone to using the deck gun than most other U-Boat captains. He made quite a name for himself in using the gun, as many other captains thought that the gun was alomost useless and had it removed in preference to a little extra speed.
However, most of the gun kills from Hardegen were during the earlier part of the US caostal war, when very few aircraft or escorts were available to the US. There was one story that mentioned that Hardegen fired a few shots at a freighter, until the crew got the message - waited for them to clear the area in their boats and rafts, before commencing to shell the ship to oblivion!
