View Full Version : Suggestions for a good name for the Maddox BoB 'Storm of War'/ 'Cliffs of Dover'

The suggested title 'Storm of War' doesn't really appeal to me. Does anyone have a suggestion for a better name for the forthcoming Battle of Britain sim by Maddox and 1C?

It has to be generic to the whole series and not just to represent the British fighter pilots in BoB.

Something like "Steel Birds" would be better, IMHO...

I have to confess...no offence intended...that "Steel Birds" is in my opinion slightly weak...partially because the planes were not primarily made of steel at all

What's wrong with 'Storm of war'? The flight sim community didn't seem to have trouble with figuring out what 'Il2 Sturmovik' was, or what 'Forgotten Battles' was. I forsee no problems with product recognition

I think (IMHO http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif) that the name should have two parts...something like 'Pilots of War: Their Finest Hour'. Then you could change the second part of the name for subsequent releases ex. 'Pilots of War: Pacific Excursion'. Oops!

BTW Taylortony 'The Few' is an excellent title for the BoB release.

I don't really care but Storm of War abbreviates poorly as

SOW

People will call it 'porked' or 'it's a pig' or
'what a hog' or something derogatory like that.

I think all of the above suck cheesy ones....surely you guys can come up with something more meaningful,
Steel Birds http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif ????
Pilots of War http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif ???

what has that got to do with the Battle of
Britain???

Something along the lines of.... "Tides of War: Battle of Britain."

This allows for both the preceding Battle of France and the subsequent conquest of the LW over various theatres.
I am sure though someone else can come up with something even better, bearing in mind that a phrase in another language may not translate into english with the same strenght as it does in the original language.

I think the 'Storm of War' is not a bad name for a series, and I'm sure they considered many names. Maybe something that indicates an Air War but Storm of War works for me, as the ground actions are modelled.

Storm of War " The Battle of Britain "
Storm of WAr " The Mediterraen Theater" (Sp)
Storm of War " The Eastern Front"
Storm of War " The Pacific Theater"
Storm of WAr " The Western Front" etc

Storm of War " The Battle of Britain" will also have the battle of france and I think poland done by third parties. Either at release or sometime after.

I think that the 'Storm of War: xxxx' is a great way to title the series; however my prefrerred series title would be 'War in the Air: xxxx'.
Simple and self-explanatory. 1C:Maddox could use it for every other conflict too, WW1 to Iraq.
Of course, if it's been used before, then disregard this post!

Cheers!

I'd be happy with "Full Blown Pacific Theater With All the Bells and Whistles Possible" for the title of Oleg's next sim. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

That said, I like Storm of War as an intro title, Major, but agree with Waldo that the SOW abbreviation would be a problem. I like the "Tides of War:" suggestion.

Also, what about....

"Warplanes:" (Warbirds being taken, I believe)
"Air War:"
"Total Air War:"

........something descriptive of the war itself.

I like Storm of War. But I would rather have something which makes it known that it is not a first person shooter and has no tank or naval combat, but is strictly air.

I think Storm of War is the best that anyone has come up with.

I can't wait for the pacific add on: 1492: Columbus's Midway Inquisition.

Not sure how they sound in Russian but in english they have NO relation whatsoever to The Battle of Britain, sound more like some cheesey titles for a cheesy shoot 'em up.
You have to remember for many in the British Isles the BoB was a DEFINING moment, an ICON, equating what was "their finest hour,(the few)" to a cheesy pc game title just SUCKS.
It needs to be a DIGNIFIED yet strong name that can withstand use as a launch pad for a series of additions both pre- and post- the actual BoB.
To me Storm of War sounds CHEESY and CORNY, Tide(s) of War,Wind of War or some other phrase I think sound MUch better....imho.

Along the lines of a more non-specific title system that could span the entire series, I would suggest 'Airpower' as the base name, provided there were no copyrights etc. (pretty sure there's at least one show with the same name) It is sufficiently succinct that you know what you're buying right away and yet not limited in it's scope to just fighter combat or a particular plane/engagement. Oh, and for those who like looking at stuff alphabetically, it will be a the top of any list! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Then you could attach either descriptive or familiar terms to describe each particular expansion.

e.g.
"Airpower: The Few" for the BoB
"Airpower: Blitzkrieg" for a Poland/lowlands/France expansion
"Airpower: BarBarossa" for when we revisit the first half of the Eastern front
"Airpower: Desert Sands" for a Med expansion
etc...

I like the name. Much better than the "Storm of War" one. So, we can have:

"Tides of War: The Battle of Britain "

"Tides of War: The Western Front" etc...

I like Storm of War as the cover title for a whole serise. Quite a dynamic and forceful name.

I do really hope that they plan out their planesets with a little more care this time around though.

What I want is a really intensive theater specific simulation realeased for each new add-on. So for BoB we get all the relevant mpas, flyables and AI. Then they take those existing flyables and AI and move fowards/backwards in time to the next most relevant theatre and map(s), so that they don't have to model too many new planes and leave any holes in coverage.

So say they go: BoB-->France-->Poland--> ?Spainsh Civil War?, each as a seperate release, which would give you an excellent base plane set for the huge leap to Barbarossa 1941.

Or, another option would be: BoB-->Malta/Meditteranean-->Nth Africa-->Sicily, which gives you Brit/US carriers and some US planes, so that you have a good base plane set for the Pacific 1942.

Things I don't want to see are 1. The 1943-1945 ETO as one of the first add-ons after BoB.
2. The Pacific as one of the first add-ons after BoB

Things I do want to see:

1. France/Poland/Spanish Civil war, from all sides. I get way more enjoyment out of the early war stuff than the post 1943 stuff.

2. Finland/Baltic campaigns. Still relatively unknown, even among flight simmers. Supporting the samll boat war in the Baltic sea in a Hurricane II against Fw 190s would be intense.

3. China 1941-1943 and CBI 1942-1945.

What about:

"Case Yellow: Battle of Britain" or
"Fall Gelb: Battle of Britain" or
"Battle of Britain: Case Yellow/Fall Gelb"

an Eastern front expansion would then be

"Operation Barbarossa: Case Blue/Fall Blau" or vice versa

might be too blue-ish for some http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Well I think what they are going for here is one Main name for the sim, and then a subcategory, like:

[fill in the blank]: Battle of Britian
[fill in the blank]: Med war

If the sim gets a new name for each stage of it's development, that will cause some confusion

Why not call it ""That stupid game", and the sequel "That stupid game again". This way the ladies would get it right when they whine "Don`t tell me you`re gonne spend the weekend playing that stupid game (again)"

hmmm....BOB will only be about the battle of britain with maybe the battle of france and poland thrown in by a third party. I'm also sure you can use the existing map for coastal attacks into France 1940-1941. I would over time expect add-on aircraft to expand these attacks.

Storm of War ' The Battle of Britain '

Then the next in the series will come out...probably the Med theater.

Storm of War ' The Mediterraen Theater'

and so on pick a theater...probably in order of year.

I think thats what you meant Chuck...or I may have miss read your post.

I know alot people still don't get it. I still think the 'Storm of War' is a good title for the series of theaters.

"For King and Country" - UK sales might be good at lreast.

"The Colour of Death"....maybe too much drama...

I don't know if anybody has said it yet (as I have not read every thread, but how about something like:

Storm Clouds On ............

Or:

Storm Front On .............

Or:

Ill Wind ...something.....

The spaces could be filled in as the series continues, such as ......Dover, or ....Mermansk, Berlin, Moresby.

I think that to have a catchy recognisable beginning will instantly tell you what it is and who it is from, with the last bit describing the actual location. Storm clouds, or Ill Wind has always been a way of describing trouble coming to a location after all.

Oh, Buggered if I know. Gotta think some more http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Well ONE thing that MS got right was the title... "Combat simulator" is VERY generic... as the title "WARBIRDS".. I would go for something similar but also a title that makes it clear for the buyer what it is.

how about a title like:

"Airmen - Battle of Britain"
"Airmen - the Mediterranean Theatre"
"Airmen - Blitzkrieg"
"Airmen - 1939"
"Airmen - The Pacific"
"Airmen - Red Front"

or

"Aces - Battle of Britain"
"Aces - the Mediterranean Theatre"
"Aces - Blitzkrieg"
"Aces - 1939"
"Aces - The Pacific"
"Aces - Red Front"

or similar..... It should be easy to understand the product, it is easy to say "I play airmen" or "aces" and people understand.."Storm of war" says nothing...and also.. it is ALWAYS good with a product starting with an "A"... beeing listed up high is product listingshttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

How 'bout " Threatening Skies: Channel Front"? This allows the theme to be established for each point of the war where someone's looking up fearfully for an enemy aircraft, ie, 'Threatening Skies: Early Flames' for the Polish and Winter War campaigns, with possible inclusions of the Spanish civil War, the Sino-Japanese conflict or the Nomenhan Incident, for one example.

As others have mentioned, "Storm of War" doesn't quite ring true for a WWII flight sim (although it works for a tank sim IMO).

The problem is that with a world wide, and therefore multilingual, market, it's gotta be tough to find something that sounds good (or at least not real cheesy) in every major language group.

cheers

Given that there will be an aerobatic aircraft included (and hopefully more of them in add-ons, and as third party aircraft) it seems that they have again chosen a name that is too confining.
