Hi all,

Today I'm totall busy making some video as a part of my presentation at exhibition in Moscow next week.
We have a problem with beta binaural sound recording in AVI (crash....).
Anyway I decided to put one of the short videos.
And some screen shots.

Here is the video of Il-2 1946 just to remind all how much there are... and how great is still to play it with so many various of modelled theaters and things...

<object codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0"

And here some not so successfull attemp to record video from BoB (still some problems with recording over which the team is working right now) You may notice the help pop up line for novices there (traslation: to make light of gunsight brighter. By clicking there). Notice, there is stil the bug with WAIT instead of Watt... it is corrected, but will be in pre final version.

Next week probably we will be unable to post anything, but after next week - will try to post some new video and shots. But don't ask for each week video! That procedure takes some time that we haven't really!

Shots:
the first one show some of the engine features (for future game add-ons, etc)
Second - some light (it will wokrs by different way.... random and.....later will tell)
3rd - variant of damage at landing
4th - how map of London looks in Mission builder in 2D mode.
5th - Simply some details of important places in London (such several objects will be impossible to destroy that to have no problems with the laws in some contries).

I should remind everyone that it's still being tuned and de-bugged, and the shots were taken on the not-so-state-of-the-art rig that they use (mainly for optimization).

PS - the hurricane is being flown by AI (rookie). http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It's exactly what I would expect for a first timer. Also notice that the AI changes and re-adjusts its aim. This should take care of the "hose" effect which is done by the current AI where they either miss completely, or kill you in a split second.

The video, even though it is a work in progress build of the sim, is astounding.

It totally obsoletes IL2/46.

This is unacceptable, even for AI.. everybody can put a x-hair on a target, especially from 6, no matter how useless they are ???

You would be surprised.

You will notice that the pipper is kept on the Heinkel's wing and it looks like a hit was scored. If he kicked the rudder, then he would have raked the fuselage a bit...

The other Hurricanes didn't have as much trouble.

Anyway, Oleg hinted that the game would include a very complex AI that not only included rookie, veteran, ace, etc. but also would take into account cautiousness, aggressiveness, fear, etc.

Remember that rookie pilots would often expend their entire belts without scoring a kill, or even a hit. It's easy to forget that when we sit in front of a computer screen.

What I noticed is the Mission builder looks familiar.

And he was able to get inside the AI's pit for the movie.

That said, think of all the possibilities for movie making, if we can get into the opponents pit from the tracks.

I've asked for this ability for years from Oleg. If it is included on retail version, I'll be pleased.

Also for the movie makers, you'll notice he said you can record directly to .AVI from within the game.

I would think Spring would be the worst time to release it, but hey ho at least we wil get it earlier.

Shame it wasnt ready for Christmas this year. They would have got more sales.

I think this movie was purely to show the first sound. Which is why he only aimed for the wing. It was purposefully not to show any damage, which will come in a later movie.

Precisely. It's easy for any of us with 5+, even 10 years of IL-2 experience to forget how hard it was to score a single hit let alone kill a plane in IL-2 the first time. I was amazed when I showed this sim to a friend of mine (Airbus 320 pilot by profesion), who never played it before (and since, probably). He flew very well, took off with heavy torque in nearly perfectly straight line, landed better than 99% of my landings, but shooting... no way he could score a hit on an enemy rookie fighter, maybe he got some bullets home on an unarmed bomber. It's much harder than it seems, but we are all very, very experienced in virtual shooting compared to the experience of average WW2 figher pilot in real shooting. We have that "refly" button which enables us to retain our skill even after being killed afterall, in contrast with real WW2 pilots.

I agree. You could take any good CFS, or EAW sim pilot and he could immediately score hits when IL-2 was first released. Although there are many sim pilots who are not very accurate as they just don't fully understand convergence, bullet drop, and target leading. Atleast thats my experience flying on-line against other sim pilots.

While I feel I understand convergence, lead, and other nuances of gunnery, I still can't hit the broad side of a barn sometimes. My blood gets pumping after hunting someone for half an hour, and everything I know goes out the window as I spray everywhere. It really just has to be second nature, or you have to be a cold-blooded brute, who doesn't get excited. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Some of the greatest aces of WWII didn't have a great grasp of gunnery at all, and simply got close to make a kill - no convergence or lead to worry about from 10 meters.

BTW, it's really fun to watch my friends who have never played IL-2 before. Sometimes they can't even get close, and are surprised to learn that ammo is limited. "OK, what do I press to reload?"

One of my BlitzPig squad mates is in the USAF and has put at least 2 F-15 pilots at the controls of IL2. He says they were very good at gunnery, and all phases of combat flight, except they absolutely had no concept of conserving energy, as in an F-15 more energy is just a push of the afterburner button away, and that is where he would beat them every time.

hehe, that sounds perfectly true.

I think the F15 has a thrust to weight of greater than 1? So they can point straight up and keep accelerating!

WW2 fighters are massively underpowered compared to modern jets.

They got short-sticked in terms of the computers provided for the event. According to Luthier, they had i7 processors, and Nvidia 640 graphics, but only 2gb of RAM. So, they're forced to keep the players flying over the water to keep the frame-rates high enough for a demonstration...

On page 4 of the above link is someone's impressions of the game as it was presented. Google did a horrible job, so I won't copy it here. I get the idea from his post that the clouds are great, the smoke not so much. The AI is good, and doesn't snipe, and with full difficulty, one really has to be careful with how they manage the plane. Apparently he broke the engine in a few minutes because of mis-management(that's what I'm talking about! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )

Latest videos - lots of interesting features!!!

It looks like there are 3 versions of the Do-17, 2 of the Hurricane (both 3 bladed), 2 versions of the He-111, 4 versions of the Spitfire and a mystery plane...

You will also notice the Bf-110 in British markings.

Note - stutters occur when flying over terrain. As Ilya said, this is due to the fact that the hardware supplied for the event has only 2gb of RAM.

Well, this is what Oleg had to say on the matter (translated and annotated by Saqson)

quote:

All-in-all, there are so many [keyboard command - SQ] settings, that even I had to ask Roman [the functionality programmer - SQ] what it was all for... He programmed a f*king heap of realism for you... We should make some way to switch that f*king heap [of keyboard settings - SQ] off, so it won't show with normal [difficulty] settings... Or a dummy [a newbie player] would just fall off his chair.

Notice the game freezing up at the end of that video. It seems they haven't ironed all the bugs yet.

Cyborg EVO FTW http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

Pay attention to all the reports gents, the frame rates are low because the show promoters provided low spec computers to the exhibitors.

They were all i5, GTX 460, 2 gigs of ram.

Another 2 gigs of ram would have fixed the problem.

No no, it's not the CPU or GPU that's causing the slowdown, it's the 2gig of RAM. It was explained that the large game map needs more than 2gig of RAM, I think they said minimum of 3gig of RAM. If these pc's had 3 or 4 gigs of RAM the gameplay would be butter smooth. And these are high graphics settings too, when they found out about the RAM situation they had to choose between lower graphics settings and high FPS or high settings and lower FPS, they chose to show off high graphics!

Wow, just watched this, looks like they may have sorted the RAM issue, at least for this pc, that looks pretty smooth.
