The Uboat Commanders Handbook, stresses the importance of being able to accurately estimate range, and having your crew constantly practice range estimation.

I know as a tanker, who need a similar ballistic solution, we spent a lot of time training in range estimation.

It seems that this would be the most common method, because in most situations the mast head method is not practical, just takes too much time, and is too dependant on long range visual sightings.

How difficult is this to model on a 2d computer monitor?

I think estimating the distance to a ship on a 2d-monitor with the current restraints on resolution and detail is quite difficult. The problem I see is that for an accurate fire solution you need very exact data, otherwise your rather slow torpedoes will miss their target.

For a tank with a high-velocity gun and a rather flat trajectory of the rounds fired minor errors in estimating the range are not a very big problem.

one of the biggest disipointments of Manual Firing in SH2, was trying to estimate range....what is being done about this???

You can easy estimate range of a ship, if you have mast head height data from the contact book.........

We introduce a precision reticle into SH2 periscope, real reticles was not accurate li8ke this introduced.......

But some german periscopes was fitted with a double image optical device, which permit you rise up one image up to put the floatation line of one over the mast head of the other........ and then you read the angle..........

Knowing the angle Tangent, and using mast head height as sinus, you can easy obtain the range wich is the cosinus.

Due to the fact of this device was not present in SH2, we introduce a new precise reticle to can make a good angle reading.......

Here the procedure to estimate range with this new add on..............

I am not sure what the team are doing to measure range, but will be good to be able to have a real method or almost be able to introduce a precision reticle as add-on...... to maintain the present high level or hardcore level of manual shooting obtained in SH2.......

You can find an illustration how double-image optics wors for range estimation here:

Did you have links to share with technical data from German Periscopes from that age and early ages Bruno ?

Regards, Red.

Unfortunately, not really. The case, however, is not lost yet. Why don't you try Axis History forum. They've got technical sections as well. I am sure, when you find something you'll share, won't you? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hey Red,

YOu have addressed this many times and I have read your toutorials through Subsim.com forums before. I was speaking more on the lines of a more acurate Stock periscope than what we saw in SH2 (not talking about your add on). Something we can actually use..without moding .....and without pauseing the game and doing math problems (which is just not good enought for me).

I understand well you Finchou....... and I am completletly agree with you.........

As I wrote above, I am interesting in to maintain the hardcore level we had reached in SH2 in SH3......... from the box.......... without need to expend months of job fixing the sim wich one we pay for......

Completely agree with you............

If you practice, in few time you will able to do the maths calculations with "no pausing" the game, even without have dedicated calculator rulers...........
