...And i get to the LaGG-3 and its mods... Seemingly none of the different varients have much in the way of strengths or advantages.. they all have a laundry list of things that are a disadvantage to the plane and its pilot in a fight... was this a stop-gap measure at some point just to get some sort of air to air defence?? Has anyone had any success in the sim with the bird? i am curious as to the history behind the aircraft, cause from reading the pdf... it sure looks like a mess.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

It was better than what they had before. It could better attack incoming bombers.
It could better even get to those fast bombers. Would you rather try to stop those
with I-16's?

Compare to P-40B perhaps?

I have one book that tells the Il-2 first models became the premier interceptors when
they deployed, for lack of better. I like Il-2 single seat for guns but I think the
LaGG-3 early model is still the superior dogfighter. Compare those.

What did they have before the LaGG-3's? I can see if it was better than nothing, because anything is better than nothing, but im sure that quickly there after, another aircraft came along and replaced it... and im curious as to all the mods, and if anything helped it.

kinda interesting reading all the information in the PDF file, especially looking from one version to another of a particular aircraft.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

MiG-3 and I-16, some I-15 and I-153 made up for the bulk of the fighter force when the LaGG was introduced. The MiG handled like a pig down low , burned easily and had insufficient armament. Also was just being intropduced. The I-153 was a biplane and the I-16 a first generation monoplane. The LaGG was about 100kph faster than both of the Polikarpovs. From the engineering point, it was far more advanced than the I's, featuring retracting landing gear and a closed cockpit. Radio was there, too.

Fire up the sim and fly a campaign against AI F4s with an I16. Then try it with the Lagg. You`ll see why the laggs were a better alternative. They can at least catch a jerry plane most times...<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I just don't know - well it's just me, most likely - but if I make the mistake of picking up a LaGG-3 I'm a dead man every feekin' time http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif I just plainly _cannot_ catch those Franzes in one - never did, never will! I just wonder WTF is wrong with me...

But then again I'm a ground pounder anyway, not a fighter ace so maybe it's just that... I can shoot an average AI G2 down if I'm flying a Yak-3 however http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Maybe its just a mood and I soon will feel better, but I think I feel offended by words like 'jerry' or 'Krauts' or 'Franzes'... why don't you just use 'germans'?

And it don't helps me, if you tell me, that you are just referring to the AI pilots... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

And to add something to the topic:

No matter, how bad those LaGGs behave in air - they look very beautifull IMHO, compared with other planes of their age... just an optical statement.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Oh they did have something before the LaGG3 - the LaGG1 http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

LaGG3 was actually a JUMP forward. All it needed then was a good engine and more reliability...and maybe better pilots.

LaGG3S66 as a peak of its evolution was a good plane,nothing close to La5 but good.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Ah, sorry. What I was talking about, however, was the Bf-109F series Messerschmitt (F = "Franz").

I hope this clears it up http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif S!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Why should Jerry be offensive? You can call me Tommy if you want. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif I suppose someone else will complain that they don`t like German being associated with WWII either eventually.

Yah, just ask our Swedish patrons 'bout that one. I'm sure they'll gladly translate / explain the term to U http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Explaining aknowledged and apprecciated. Thanks and sorry for mistaking the 'Franz' (wasn't it 'Friedrich' instead?).

To others: I didn't say, everyone should feel offended. I said, I do. And as long as this is a official public room, everyones oppinions should be equal. For the same reason I don't use words like Japs or Yanks or whatelse. These are nicknames used in a war and I guess they where not meant friendly.

Just behave public correct.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
