I hadn't touched the P-38 after PF until last night and I come to find out that its been turned into a beast. Granted I was playing offline, but I took on three Aces in 109G14s in the QMB and easily knocked them out of the sky with it and against zeros, forget about it, they don't stand a chance. I'm going to take it up online tonight and get some practice in against real pilots but I'm hooked.

We really should keep this a secret, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif pretty soon everyone will want to start flying the 38, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/351.gif then the lufty's will start calling it UBER, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/cry.gif and start calling us cheaters, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif heck they already are complaining about the single 20mm, http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif next thing you know it will become the next Spit http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I'd like to but that's about 9 where I'm at and I'd only be able to play for an hour or so. I've gotta be up by 6 to get to a legal writing class. I'd skip it but this is the only time I can opt out of certain days and times for oral arguments and I've gotta make sure I don't get a morning slot. Do you guys play on the weekends at all or even Wed. or Thurs would be better at that time.

Check my stats at Warclouds before whining about what I fly http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It lists all the planes I fly over there.

I'll have to check out these super-p38s one day on war clouds. I've honestly never had a problem with them unless I got caught on take-off/landing in a 190. I've never seen any model of p-38 follow a FW-190 in a split-s over 400 kph.

I guess if you (p-38 pilot) suckers the luftwaffe aircraft to fight on their terms and the German pilot forgets all the strengths of his aircraft it would be an easy kill.

Best case scenario for the 38 I see is a stalemate. Unless the enemy pilot doesn't respect it and thinks, "I can turn with it for a while, its just a p-38..."

It depends upon the altitude I think.

On the Ploesti missions I dominated P-38s even on the high skill levels with the IAR.80 hands down. Just don't stop turning and he's toast.

You betchya, when the 38 is flown in teams, the LW doesn't stand a chance.

I could care less about your stats, but I see the top pilot flys a P-51.

Do you guys use differential throttle? According to what i've read (especially Martin Caiden's great book about P-38s) the pilots who could master using different throttle settings for each engine could turn with 109s and FWs. Since that feature is in this sim now, I kinda wondered about that.

Is anyone doing a P-38F? That would be needed to do an accurate Guadalcanal cmpn, or most anywhere before 44 or late 43. I could redo my "87 Days of CActus" cmpn I did in MS CFS-2 if I had that. Well, that and an F1M1 Pete.

Never mind my stats, it was in response to a guy concerned about what I fly.

Check what plane has highest K/D. Then check it in few days, once all planes have kills and death in triple digits. Be sure MK108 will rule the server http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

P38 is already showing as rather pathetic performer regarding K/D, as it is virtually outclassed by every LW fighter available.

Who is the top pilot ? By what criteria ?

S!,
I must say that I'm pleased to see the p38 being used more often in a fighter role than the usual ground pounder. I've always like the performance of the p38j. If I fly the lighting, just for kicks mind you, I always take the J for DFing.

I'd also like to say that caliber of pilots flying the p38 has increased. No longer are they an easy kill when flying at altitude. There are some smart p38 jockeys out there now and know the meaning of NRG management. The p38, while flying in coordinated groups, is a tough cookie now. They are particularly good at using the 'drag & bag' tactic.

Just the other day on WC, I had the fortune of encountering 5 p38s flying at 5km+ What a great fight! I flew into the swirling mass as a teammate was in trouble w/ those p38s. He was in a ta152 and was boxed in by this group. This group was disiplined and would not allow the Ta to extend and climb. Diving in from 500m+ advantage, I was able to get some solid hits several p38s. None of the hits were critical, but I did manage to smoke/fuel leak 3 of them and get credit for them after they successfully landed. I honestly can't say what the out come would of been if I had been in a heavily armed A9 (I was in my trusty A6 of course), but those pilots changed my mind about the p38.

I salute all of those p38 pilots in that group. The only one I knew for sure flying in that group was 310thMotrin.

PS, if you wonder why I don't fly the a9 w/ the 30mm, well, it's my personal crusade to use the 151/20 and do well w/ them.

That was Myself, Motrin, Rep of Tex, and I cant remember the other 2 ( sry guys ) we flew together all afternoon staying tight, it was a blast, I hate the RTB msg when you fly clear across the map and land yet your opponent gets the kill credit http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif good fight tho Hienz, I think we chased ya around most of the afternoon http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

Personally, I believe P38 benefits the most of its pilots. The plane itself isn't an easy plane to master, so naturally newbies are driven off.

Only enthusiasts remain and actually make the plane look better than it really is.

Same for P47. While P51 is probably a better plane overall, I respect P47 far more. It is usually flown by above average pilots who more than compensate for any possible plane shortcomings.

Still, stats are fairly reliable evidence on how a plane performs in the arena. So far, P38 does very poorly this tour on Warclouds.

S!,
Hristos, while the stats may indicate an overall trend for the p38, I wouldn't want to depend on them if Cuda, Motrin, Tex, etc are flying together http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif In all honesty, their performance as a group, in the p38, was top notch. They acted as a single unit and covered each other extremely well.

I believe we're starting to see that the p38, as it's currently modeled, isn't the dog most people believe it to be. Perhaps, a revolution is at hand? LOL. Anyhow, in the hands of an 'ethusiast', this plane can be quite deadly. It is definitely not a beginners plane.

I look forward to facing this group of men in my A6 while they fly the p38...the challenge is trak worthy http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm not suprised the hits were not critical, as this is quite normal with the current MG151/20.

With the MG round properly included, your hits would probably have been catastrophic.
