View Full Version : Unable to authenticate original disc...

I just bought Myst V (Limited Edition) and have installed it. The installation went smooth, but when I try to run the game, I get an error saying:
Unable to authenticate original disc within time limit.
Try again?
I hit Try Again and get:
Original disc could not be found or authenticated.

This has happened several times, and continued after restarting my computer and re-instering the disc. My system specs are more than enough to run the game. I may also want to mention that this is happening as well with my most recent game, F.E.A.R., so I am thinking it is a problem with my CD/DVD Drive. This problem occurred once before in the past, with Half-Life 2, but after a few tries it worked and hasn't happened again. Every other game I have played hasn't given me this problem, and I find it very odd that my two most recent games, bought this weekebnd, have given me the same problem.

If anyone know howto fix this, or any suggestions if this has happened to you before, please let me know ASAP. I am going to search for any new drivers for my CD/DVD Drive, and then re-install the game. If anything changes I'll post back here.

UPDATE:
I have tried re-installing the game several time, nothing changed. I searched for any updates for my CD/DVD Drive, there is now new drivers for it. As for F.E.A.R., securom released an update to the exe file that fixes the problem for that game, and now that gmae is working fine. I'm pretty sure my problem has something to do with an incompatibility between Securom and my DVD Drive (since it's a DVD Burner). I have emailed securom and I am waiting for a reply back with (hopefully) something helpful.

Thanks, Gabe

P.S. Here's my dxdiag:

HI,

We had a similar problem. At installation with the cd drive, we had not noticed that the full install path was done by using the dvd address.

After many hours of trying much high tech moves we almost decided to sent Myst V to garbage. A friend had a good intuition and said : try playing with the other drive ( in our case, the dvd drive ). And the mystery was solved.

prod_gy,

Suggestions:

1. You have a couple of virtual disks installed, F: and G:. SecuROM often doesn't work with virtual disks, so you should try uninstalling them using Task Manager, before playing EoA.

There are also some other "in general" considerations for EoA, which can apply to playing the game as well as installing it. Look under Installing and Re-Installing EoA With Win XP in Myst V: Clean Boot Install/Re-install With Win XP (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/3471054943/m/6171031163), one of the stickied topics at the top of this Forum.

2. If you haven't already done so, download and install the latest BIOS update (version 3.14, released 9/8/05, sp26572.exe) for your Presario, available here (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?dlc=en&lc=en&os=228&product=441650&lang=en&cc=us&softwareitem=pv-28445-4) from HP. Follow all of HP's instructions *very carefully*!

3. The latest firmware update (version 9H10, released 10/20/04, SP26401.exe) from HP for your Philips DVD8421 is available here (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=pv-25051-1). If this isn't the version you have, download and install it. Follow all of HP's instructions *very carefully*!

BTW, the driver and software downloads for your Presario SR1010Z (PJ623AV) are available here (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?dlc=en&lc=en&product=441650&lang=en&cc=us&os=228).

Have also DVD burner (LG GSA-4082b). Strange thing was that myst actually worked for 2 days, then PC crashed and from then on that annoying "unable to authenticate disc" was all i got. Followed nearly every tip in the forum, nearly downgraded my system (to a simple dvd drive), started to study russian - but found it just a bit too absurd to have to download an illegal crack for a legal game. so had that brilliant - well, suggested - idea to try UBI support and good news. they replied same day and supplied me with a patch. Incredible what good support can do. I am going to forgive them for all the imperfections of the game and just go and enjoy it one last time.
