I have finished the campaign in SH3 and have decided to start over from the begining, and since its been so long since I've been at the start, I have forgotten if the following is normal.

I am now time wise at the begining of Jan/1940, and so far any battle encounters with destroyers etc, they have not depth charged me, pinged and tracked me yes, but no depth charge drops?
Aircraft drops yes.
Is this normal? It's been so long since I have been at the begining of the game to be honest I cant remember.
I am running SH3 stock game with 1.4 patch no mods yet but considering putting some in.
I am playing the game on 82% realism.

It's been so long since I've played an unmodded game, but I'll hazard a guess: even though they have searched for you [pinging] they may not have detected you. They are not likely to drop DC's without a detection. Which pinging sound are you hearing? The normal pinging when they search changes pitch when you are detected and you will get a notification from the crew that you are being pinged. I'm also guessing that since you are in the early war period, that the competency level of the escorts is rather lower than mid to late war.

A test you can try is to create a save point in your current patrol and then do something to be detected underwater, such as running at high speed near an escort, just to see if he can detect you. If you get killed, just reload from an earlier save, or use a "throwaway" career to test your game.

Thanks Kaleun1961,

The suggestions you gave as to the lack of depth charges, I have suspected as well, just wasn't sure.

The pinging (not sure of the tone, but seems slow) when it does happen is very short in lenght, and my crew occasionally mentions it, but have heard them say "destroyer in attack run!", hear destoyer pass over me, no depth chargeing?
Seems all or most so far is normal, except for depth charges being absent, but like you said its still early in the war, so I will continue and see if they get smarter.
Thanks for your help.

And the crew don't give you a "Depth charge in the water!" message during the attack run? That doesn't sound right...

Have you checked the external view of the destroyer to see if it actually drops any DCs in the water? I'm just wondering if there is a problem with the sound.

Maybe load up a single mission and get yourself depth-charged, just to see if it's a problem with the campaign only.

Like K61, I can't remember what destroyer behaviour is like in stock SH3... If you ever install GWX2, you will find destroyers to be more of a worry! (but still avoidable if you are careful. As you've completed a campaign and are now playing with fairly high difficulty, I'm sure you could do well with GWX2's more realistic gameplay.

Thanks VikingGrandad, yea I'm going to look into the mod, as far as external view is concerned I have it shut off, but event camera is on, and sound seems fine at least when aircraft drop charges on me, hear them real well, feel them too lol.
I just don't think the destroyers are totally aware where I am this early in the campaign, as I suppose if they were dropping the charges, and I had a sound problem, at least my sub would shake or sustain damage if they dropped them close enough.
Like I said I'm going to run it a bit longer to see what happens depth charge wise.
