View Full Version : What's wrong with AI in low-altitude fight? 2.04?

S!
I've never comlained when I encountered bugs in this excellent sim, but what's enough is enough!

I started to play an offline Stalingrad campaign with P-39, but it's not playable anymore. Once in every four flights or so half of the squadron crashes into the ground while fighting at the low altitude...

Last flight says it all, all 5 out of 6 Aircobras crashed while trying to shoot at enemy Macchi 202.

They just use barrel roll to disengage after attack in zero altitude!!! I could understand it with rookie AI pilots, not handling P-39 correctly, but with aces and veterans (10 - 15 kills)???

It seems to me that in 2.04 this behaviour worsened a lot?

You can see the track:

Hope this will get fixed real quick, it ruins whole offline game...

I've had AI problems recently too. They can barely keep the planes in the air:

12 on 12 109s & 190s v. Spits and P-51s. We (my AI teammates and I) downed most of the enemy while 10 of us survived. But at the end of the encounter, ALL 9 of the survivors crashed before landing. I tried it again and nearly the same thing happened (8 died and 2 survived along with me).

had the same problem with a stuka campaign. I got the big tankbusterguns .. 12 stukas set out .. I was the only one flying after 4 minutes, the other ones just went into the ground and my autopilot tried the same, enthusiastic about introducing me to earthlevel, apparently http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

the point is that IMHO it wasn't that bad in 2.01, was it? My impression, anyway...

anyone else who's not playing only online?

I think it's been like this for awhile.

Back before AEP, I was trying a JU87G campaign and the first tank busting mission, we went flying away at low altitude along the flat terrain near Kursk... All the planes except for me augered into the ground.. this happened EVERY time I tried to play the mission.

Then, after AEP came out I was playing a BF110 campaign. Our airfeild was near a rather large hill, and EVERY time we took off at least 3 of my flight would take off and turn right into the hillside..

Also, many times in the QMB when I'd set up a low altitude furball with a bunch of J8A's, I-16
s, and the like I cant count how many AI aircraft in their attempts to get away from me, would just auger into the ground.

This is a great sim, but the only problem I've ever had with it is the AI is so craptastic it's pathetic.. It's why I stopped playing offline unless I'm practicing my gunnery on "drones". I got tired of playing campaigns and having midair collisions for no reason, having my flights commit suicide via crashing, and of course I got fed up with the AI not suffering from any kind of flight model that I could see. Not to mention the fact that sneaking up on the AI also seems to be impossible because every time you put your gunsight on them, fire off your first rounds, they break off into some flash-dance stall out uberspin evasion maneuver.

I guess there is no chance for serious changes in AI. Let us just hope that BoB will be better http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

the other interesting thing is that if you turn with them for a while they eventually get bored with it and start to fly sraight and level towards their original waypoint and ignore you even when you sit on their six at 10 metres and pump them full of holes
