This is one of the flyables coming out I really know little about regarding it's operational role(s). I'm mentally trying to put it in a certain category with others but the whole dive-bombing thing just throws me for a loop. Is this like the German equivalent of an A-20, or more like a Mossie, or were the design parameters so unique it doesn't fit well into any certain category?

Its not comparable with anything on the Allied side on western.
Its a different concept on wich all the crew was put on a single compartment for morale boost.
The aicraft was able to perform dive bombing (an idea of the first WW2 german standards that all bombers should be designed to perform dive bombing), torpedo attacks when correctly equiped, level bombing, anti-shipping role and with some changes it could be converted on a heavy fighter.

It was possibly the most successful night fighter of the war!

As Flakwalker says, it was used in many many roles, and it served in pretty much every single European theatre, from Norway to Africa, and France to Russia.

It could dive bomb, level bomb, dogfight (although wasn't that great at the latter there), and was fitted as a zerstoerer as well.

Ju-88 is basically just a medium bomber. More like a B-25 than anything else...and just as adaptable to different roles or even moreso.

The thing about the Luftwaffe was that after the Stuka did so well, they got obssessed with dive bombing. Everything had to be a dive bomber. Even the He-177 was turned into a dive bomber...which ironically sabotaged the only Luftwaffe aircraft with enough range and firepower to damage Soviet industry.

So the Ju-88 is basically a medium bomber type with dive brakes. What it really gives the Luftwaffe in terms of flyable aircraft is another medium bomber that is higher performance than the Heinkel and probably with a few more options in how you deliver the bombs and what types.

I reckon the version we are getting is akin to a giant Stuka. Should be a blast - literally.

Will it have any nose fired guns? I see it is a glass nosed version and has a gondola under it...any cannons pointing forward the pilot can fire?

What kind of bombload will it carry?

never thought of JU88 as a dive bomber...insane http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Well if you look at the screenshots you'll see that the one we're getting has the appropriate window markings for use as a dive bomber, along with the same bombsight as the Ju-87:

As for loadouts, it's already in the game as an AI aircraft so you can check out the possibilities - it's a good bet that the loadouts available to us will be identical.

Thus:

28xSC50
28xSC50 + 2xSC250
18xSC50 + 2xSC500
10xSC50
10xSC50 + 2xSC250
4xSC250
2xSC500
4xSC500
2xAB500
4xAB500
2xSC1000
1xAB1000
2xSC1800
2xSC2000

(But not all at once!)

Of course masochists can also fly empty if the fancy takes them...

I posted some excerpts from "Junkers Ju 88" by Ron Mackay (which i highly recommend):

I think we are getting the A-4 version, medium level/dive bomber. As a pilot I think you can only fire the forward-firing fixed MG17 on the right of the windshield.

Right on target - the Germans themselves gave the nickname to the ju88 "The Big Stuka". It was a very versatile plane, a true jack of all trades. BTW, does anyone know if we get the gunpods with MG81s? That would be tremendeous fun indeed. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I have question about the Ju88 belly gunner:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v112/Rikupsoni/J881.jpg

There is no-one there, but the bot still shoots. Are we able to enter that gun though? Or is the back gunner only enter-able? Since the front isn't atleast.

And it doesn't have torpedos in IL2?

Depends on his mood http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Dunno, truth is that I don't recall seeing pictures of the belly gunner position... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

I guess we'll see when it comes out, but as far as I can tell the only gun that will be AI-ONLY is the right top gun position if I recall correctly.

The torpedo capable version was the Ju-88 A-14, I think (afficionados correct me?). The version we are getting is the Ju-88 A-4 which is the one currently in game. So, no, we wont be getting the torpedo version!

And on this version there are no fixed forward firing guns, only the flexible mount on the right side of the cockpit.

Awesome! I've been waiting to fly this baby! The Ju-88 is one of my favorite German planes of WWII. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

In one of my WWII A/C books, it states that a Ju-88 had enough performance to evade Hawker Hurricanes in the BoB- that is before the Luftwaffe started slamming on all this weight unto the thing in order to make it deadlier (and heavier and slower)!

When is it coming out or where can we download it?

On the real Ju 88 A4 it could be either fixed or flexible. There was a retractable support for the barrel that was used for fixed position. I imagine it isnt implemented though and we just get the flexible gun.
