Any one have them? I looked in my PF folder and all I saw were the usual suspects. I went to IL2 skins but they are down for now.

I highly recommend Elephant's skins! He makes the best to be for IL2 series, take my word, this guy is in the details!

Here is a little WiP of the new USN/MC pilots pack.
Well so far I've made the basic shirt/trousers uniform (sleeves up or down),two types of life jackets, five variations for both cloth and leather flight helmets and I want to add an overalls flight suit option plus multi colored cloth flying helmets and some tiny little details such as survival packets for the vests and may be rank insignia.Along with the DGen portraits it's going to be a huge pack with 32 personalised pilots like in real life.

Love your work man. Very well done!

One question/comment however. You show the life vest worn under the parachute harness. I'm no expert on WWII pilot's gear by any means, but if the vest were inflated before removing the harness, as is the procedures for jumps over water; when the CO2 cartridge was activated, the vest would tend to crush ribs and/or restrict breathing, not to mention making the harness almost impossible to remove in the water.

Are you sure that type of life vest (May-West, I believe) shouldn't be worn over top of the harness?

Again...great work. Can't wait for IL2 Skins to come back up to download them. S!

Thank you all guys!
Hi Stel,
No you are not right about the bail out procedure. The vest was not inflated before bail out(only the British wore their vests half inflated) because, first, there is a possibility to break if touches something sharp(which is very possible) and second it reduces pilot's agility a lot, during these critical moments. It was activated after the removal of the harness,in the drink. Here is a pic to proove the way safety gear was worn.

elephant - would you mind doing some Luftwaffe pilot "jumpsuits", too?

As you can see in these two pictures there are three types I'm interested in. The first is the summer version as seen in the second picture worn by the two folks on the right.
The second version is the winter/autumn version worn by Wilhelm Batz on the first picture. It is quite similar to the other version worn by Wübke and Sachsenberg in the second picture (and Barkhorn in the first, too), but it is not made of leather or at least not of a shiny one.
The last one would be the normal late-war leather flying gear (worn by Wübke and Sachsenberg in 2nd picture). I did look through your work when il2skins was still online, but I didn't find any to my liking - mostly because of minor details.

a) I would like some without any awards.
b) No rank insignia on collar (don't belong there).
c) Simplified rank insignia on left arm (as visible on Batz's arm).
d) No tie! (that just looks weird http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif).

Possible? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I got two sets of skins from two different people... I am not sure who but thanks. What I am looking for is exactly what Elephant has......

Hi csThor,
As a matter of fact my LW references are by far the best of all WWII pilot and equipment ones I have, just because I mostly fly LW.
You are talking about the K So/41 and KW l/41,two piece flight suits.
I'm revising all my older templates and for sure these two are on schedule(+ the late war one, with late war equipment).
I know were rank insignia could be,if, placed on these suits(commonly both arms).
About the tie issue it may looks weird to modern eyes but back then the way of dressing was much more formal than today's,so ties were not so rare as you may think(I have lots of pics to proove that but no scanner I'm afraid).
Remember that for a man to walk hatless, that times, was offensive.
I guess it wouldn't be a problem though,replacing ties with scarfs. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
Here are two full flight gear+tie examples I found in my hard drive. On the left pic it's not so easy to notice behind the Rkz, but on the other pic,on the guy on the left, dismounting the Me 210, is pretty obvious.

Well I don't know the actual designation of the flight suits (I can't know everything http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif). But I think there were many differences in wearing the uniform from unit to unit depending on the Commanding Officer. For example I have Peter Düttmann's book and most pictures show the pilots to be rather dressed down, even Barkhorn or Lipfert. And Julius Meimberg remembers a pamphlet from RLM (by G¶ring himself) which was complaining about the lack of uniform discipline of the fighter pilots and requested them wearing the standard uniforms (the pamphlet was completely ignored in Meimberg's Gruppe http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif).

Concerning the rank insignia (actual epaulettes and simplified LW insignia on sleeves) I trust you knowledge. Just don't choose something above Hauptmann - it would be quite strange to those who know how to "read" thise insignia http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

If you want to know the reason for me asking all these things you may contact me at csthor(at)hotmail.com ... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Yes you are right in a way.In combat everything is allowed as long as the wearer feels comfortable.I have seen myself hundreds of different combinations of clothing and equipment used in the war.My point was that what today looks formal (tie) these days was every day dress. Most of the times LW pilots ecspecially in winter were wearing their normal dress (Fliegerbluse for example)under their flight suits.Look at the pilot at the left on the pic posted above,he is, probably, wearing Tuchrock under the K So/34 flight suit.
Check your e-mail.

If you had loaded PF as standalone, there are Japanese and US pilots in there, someone said at least... I did the merged install....

Stelr, the Mae West was always worn under the chute harness. You had to release the chute harrness to get the Mae West to inflate. Reason.... if you stayed in the harness, the chute would drag you down and you'd drown. You had to get out of it as fast as you could if possible, and only then inflate the lifevest.

Elephant, great pilot skins. ~S!~

Hi Elephant_IL2 , where i can dowload your skins ? the link for il2skins.com not work . thanks

01-14-2005, 03:05 PM
Well you have to wait a bit, il2skins is down for now but will be back soon.

01-14-2005, 09:19 PM
Thanks Elephant_IL2 and GT182. I stand corrected!

Paratroopers wore them over the harness so that you didn't sink while struggling to get out of the harness in the water. Pilots probably had less problems due to less gear. I learned something new today! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
