Thanks for the quick reply, but I have seen literally every youtube video that tries to explain it, to no avail http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

I can do what that guy does but that's just doing the effect quietly, not really making it a scream. This guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ttML8kZlzg) really has it down but I can't seem to figure it out.

I played it way back in 7th grade but I wasn't too interested in music back then, so I gave it up. I really want to start playing again but I just can't afford a cello, I got a cheap violin on Ebay for $50 so I could see if I wanted to really play but you can't find cheap cellos like that.

Hopefully in a few years I will have some kind of income and can pick up cello again...it's probably my favourite instrument of all. And I agree, it's much easier (and more fun http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif) than violin.

I play piano and guitar. For the guitar I'm playing lead in a band at the moment, we've had songs on a couple local project compilation CDs and we've done the odd gig round and about. Watch this space!

I play the drums (A hi-hat, double bass pedal, snare, hi tom-tom, mid tom-tom, low tom-tom, a ride, and two splashes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) and i have been for about 6 years.

I also play the guitar (a Fender Strat Sunburst which is like 50 years old that I got from my dad) and I have been for the past 3 years.

And I can play piano haha but more like keyboard for the band because we play very heavy stuff.

So yeah I play loads of instruments, but in my band (One Nuclear Winter) I'm on the drums, we've had atleast 5 gigs, and people say we're good http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I also write the lyrics for most of our songs

I play drums a bit. Mainly due to my dad being in a band and his electric drum kit is out the whole time. Most of it is Roland and Yamaha. But I love listening to music, mainly alternate rock, metal and classical (weird mix http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif )

I agree, they're definitely not bad, but Alter Bridge is still a thousand times better http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. In my opinion at least. Yep, I'm a musician.

I've been playing guitar for about 13 years now, acoustic and electric. From jazz, blues to black and death metal. So that's my main instrument.

Next to this I also play bass, a bit of drums, piano and keyboards/synths.

I study Composition, Music Production & Studio Technology.

I just use that term because everyone knows what you mean by it, where not everyone knows what "deathcore" is. And anyway "screamo" covers anything with screamed vocals not just the subgenre of deathcore.

That said, I hate the word screamo and I dislike most labelling, but it is a necessary evil for ease of communication.

MeAltairLol
07-24-2009, 06:00 AM
Well Screamo covers Deathcore, Metalcore and Grindcore... and Deathcore is the only true "screamo", as much as I hate that word.

Metalcore is simply watered down Deathcore, and Grindcore is just pathetic http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Btw, godsmack, does that mean you don't like Slipknot?

Metalcore is not "watered down deathcore" (even if that may accurately describe it) and grindcore is not "just pathetic," they're different styles of similar music. I really can't tolerate musical elitism.

There's no "only true screamo;" the word can be applied to all these styles.

This is why I don't like labelling, it makes it easier for people to look down on certain genres. My philosophy is, metal is metal http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif

MeAltairLol
07-24-2009, 07:05 AM
I'm not looking to start a flamewar, but Grindcore is essentially mindless screaming to a simple beat made on a computer, with lyrics that can be compared to Soulja Boy. It contains no talent whatsoever in my opinion, just go and listen to Brokencyde and tell me that's to be compared, or listed in the same genre as, Lamb of God, or Despised Icon.

As of Metalcore, I like that genre, but it is a true description of it. "Watered down Deathcore".

Metal isn't just metal, because that means you can say that a band like Stone Sour is similiar to Dark Funeral, which are Metal and Black Metal respectively? You just can't tell me they are similiar.

Therefore classing bands in subgenres isn't the same as labelling http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Regardless of how much talent it requires, it's still elitist to say a certain genre should not be respected.

I am not telling you that any two bands should have to sound similar to be counted as metal, I'm saying that metal is a mindset and a style that comes in a lot of forms but that nobody has the right to say anything is "not music" or not "true metal" because art is subjective.

Dictionary dot com defines a label as "a short word or phrase descriptive of a person, group, intellectual movement, etc." Subgenres of music fall into that definition; therefore, genres are labels. Labelling is not the same as discriminating. I'm fine with labelling as it makes communication easier, but when people start judging something based on its label is when there is a problem.

Thank god http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yeah I agree just because a genre is different doesn't mean it's not good, but both me and you, and everyone else are entitled to our opinions, and I don't think Grindcore is as good or as talented as Metal/Deathcore, simply for the fact that there is no instruments involved, which for me doesn't make it a subgenre of rock, but more of hip-hop. (Just for the record, I love hip-hop too http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif) If we use that philosophy, where Death/Metalcore are rock and Grindcore is hip-hop, surely they shouldn't be brought together under the banner Screamo?

I mean yes, they both 'scream' their lyrics, but the whole mentality of the genres is different. Grindcore is more about showing off, again, similiar to hip-hop, whereas Death/Metalcore are more about death and revenge.

And I agree with labelling in that respect, but sometimes those labels are misused or misunderstood, or actually lead to discrimination/hate. For example, ALOT of people nowadays class almost ANY metal as "Screamo". Is that fair? Should bands like Slipknot or Muse be compared to Bring Me The Horizon or Suicide Silence? I don't think so.
In that respect, I don't think musical subgenres are the same as labelling http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I used to like Slipknot, but when they realeased, All Hope Is Gone Album, I never really listened to them again, the album sucked in my opinion

Oh and JustinHeron you made an exceelent point, Metal is metal http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/metal.gif
Then theirs Country, rap, R&b, Pop. etc, I swear to god, you will have too pay me to listen those

I would've guessed by your name that you're a fellow metalhead, godsmack! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif

Fair enough, All Hope Is Gone is pretty commercial, obviously alot more than Iowa... Let me take a guess and say that you hate KoRn? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

And to be honest I love all types of music, including, yes, some country. The only music I despise is Pop and Chart Music. Talentless crap. "I can't sing so I'll make my computer do it for me." http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

Do you guys like His Infernal Majesty?

Rap and pop...Theirs not effort in it, besides the lyrics, which are mostly about...what, having sex with people, bragging how rich you are.
Most of the beats are made on a computer, then we have these people in bands who try soo hard to make it big, and they actually put effor into making drum beats, guitar riffs, lyrics, etc etc,
the only thing I like about contry is that they actually make their music...

I totally agree, godsmack. I respect country more than hip-hop because it actually takes creativity and finesse like rock does, but mainstream hip-hop is just the same shallow rhyming and cheap sampling over and over.

Alright you make a good point, but I feel that the term "screamo" was made up by people who don't appreciate metal and that it describes anything with screamed lyrics, this is why I don't like the term but I feel it effectively encompasses any music with that vocal approach regardless of the mentality. So I find it useful but I don't like it for the very same reason you don't: it bunches together very different types of music.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">And I agree with labelling in that respect, but sometimes those labels are misused or misunderstood, or actually lead to discrimination/hate. I think you are assuming "labelling" to mean "stereotyping," where they are different things. Labelling is just calling something something, making categories, and stereotyping is where people start to judge things based on the label instead of on the thing by itself. This is why I say I am okay with labelling because it makes it easier to describe a band, song, or musical taste, but labelling so often leads to stereotyping which is why it can be a bad thing.

Oh man I hate that XD I was practicing some death metal vocals recently and my mom walks by and is like "you're good at screamo" or something like that. I was like "I can't do screamo" without realizing she meant the death growls.

Exactly, you two agree with me hip-hop wise, well, modern hip-hop anyway. The classic stuff, like Dre, Tupac, and even early 50 Cent stuff was just amazing. I mean, even though you don't like hip-hop, I'd give 'The Massacre' album a listen.

Also, the point you made about computer made beats is exactly why I don't like Grindcore. The lyrics are also, like you said, about having sex with someone, or about money they suppossedly have, or just plain showing off. On top of that, purely based on the fact they 'scream' their lyrics, they don't need AS much rhythm as rappers do. Basically, they fail on both sides.

And, Justin, I see where I was wrong with the labellinghttp://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif You make a good point, sorry http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

But that's exactly what I mean, I don't know where you live, but over here in England we've got these people who are called Chavs, and I know this is stereotyping, but its true, and they won't touch anything that contains a guitar in it. I was speaking to one of them in our school, and I went "Have you heard Electric Funeral by Black Sabbath?", which I almost instantly regretted, seeing as Electric Funeral is remembered for its guitar http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/88.gif... If you haven't heard it, hear it now. Anyway, he replied "Black Sabbath? Ain't they screamo? Screamo's for grebs mate" to which I just walked away.

I really don't like that word.
