I don't know about you but he seems kind of "green" to me, would you fly with him? Let me give you his track record of performance:

1) First mission ended with a belly landing and a destroyed aircraft.

2) He shoots his first aircraft down and gets shotdown in the process.

3) Takes him 41 more missions before shooting down another airplane!

4) Goes into battle many times afterwards and gets shot down an additional 4 times and and is hospitalized for a mental breakdown!

5) After he is back to duty, he finally goes back into war and is shot down and additional 2 times. Gets captured but manages escape.

Is this guy a bad pilot or is he stricken with bad luck.. who is he anyway??

It's Hartmman.

i would be his wingman any day http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

In May 1942, Nazi submarines sank two Mexican tankers, and Mexico declared war against the Axis powers. Thus forming the 201st Mexican Fighter Squadron equipped with the P-47D and sent to fight in the Pacific

Yes he did, in fact he really started scoring victorys after he had a mental breakdown and got some off-time to go home. He returned a new man a deadly new man.

It sounds like you are talking about Erich Hartmann. I donā't ever remember anything relating to a mental breakdown though.

Hartmman-352 confirmed

Kind of a good inspiration to those who ever feel like quitting.. Agreed? AXIS/ALLIED alike!

(you guys were quick to post, I watched Gutted's new movie and 5 answers were here already)

Hmmm...

Sounds a lot like my online flying record...

Right down to the mental breakdown shortly before hitting "Disconnect" in a rage.

Though, I rarely get better when I come back afterwards.

Deadly indeed. But not a new man. A nutty man mayhaps. Cause ya had to be a nut to do pull some of the stunts he did. A complete dis-regard for personal safety. He pushed the envelope, hell he broke the envelope, most times he took wing. But I guess most fighter jocks are a little off kilter..... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Have to disagree with you a little there. In no way did he have a disregard for personal safety. If he did he would have been killed and lost a pile of wingmen along the way.

A question for any who know. How thouroughly did they have to rehabilitate (I mean denazify his image) after the war to make him acceptable for the postwar west German Air Force. I do n;t think he was a complete Nazi nut like Rudel was but I bet we will never know the truth about Hartmanns fanaticism.

I read Hartmann was never "shot down" but in those instances damaged his plane beyond repair by flying through the wreckage of his victims.

Which LW pilot spent 3 days in the Kreigmarine as the capitan of his vessel and then when he got ashore wrecked a car and spent some time in the hospital?

Indeed, many other pilots started their careers as hopeless plane-wreckers. Think of Heinz Knoke! BTW, read his auto biography, it's pure joy reading. I also recommend reading Paul Ritchey (RAF) and Pierre Closterman (French in RAF). This is as good as it gets, Pierre also had a nervous breakdown, after loosing friend after friend after friend. Great read about flying with Spits and Tempests!

Dacripler is that guy you mean actually Hartmann ?

i have read many times at many different places that Hartman wasnt ever shot down

also he wasnt a pilot to engage in risky behaviour , if it didnt look good hed simply turn around & go looking elsewhere for a bandit

Technically no, but his a/c was shot up so badly that he had to crashland.

He did get shotdown by a AA unit in Aug 19 '43 and was captured but escaped.

Rajvosa, I am reading Paul Richey's "Fighter Pilot" at present, it's fascinating. The Battle for France is kind of a "Forgotten Battle" in it's own right and it's teaching me a lot of history! Great to read the bit about the Heinkel and Hurricane pilots who shot each other down having such a rapport! If you've not read it, I'd also recommend "First Light" by Geoffrey Wellum, another excellent autobiographical war diary.

Cheers, SSS

That's a nice book. Kind of a quiet read too, as I recall. I believe it was one of the first WWII autobiographies to go into print as it was based on his diary.. What's the first publication on it, i wonder...
