The year is 1937, and the world is a dangerous place to be. Tensions between the Industrial and Confederate States of America are steadily rising. Great Britain is expanding her borders, continually putting new fleets out to sea to combat the resurging threat of Piracy. Russia has begun another civil war of it's own, attracting mercenaries and privateer gangs like moths to flame. Pirate gangs roam the world, making travel more dangerous than ever. With the advent of Zeppelins, trade, and with it piracy, have boomed. However, another, more recent, technological marvel is adding a new twist to the old concept of Piracy: The Aircraft Carrier.

Meet Nathaniel Hawkins, Captain of the Sea Dogs, a ragged crew of outlaws, pilots for hire, former squadron members - Otherwise known as pirates. Based from the Gemini Star, a commandeered escort carrier and their headquarters, the Sea Dogs traverse the known corners of the map, raiding, aiding, or working for the highest bidder. Follow their adventures and escapades as they tangle with the Royal Navies of Great Britain, battle over the snowy plains of Russia, and fly the crimson skies over North America.

"October, 1934: The Soviet Union, in its quest for oil, has invaded the Alaskan Territories, and Alaskan forces rush to meet the threat as Juneau is surrounded and besieged by the Red Army. The Industrial States of America responds by providing arms and machines to the Alaskan Militia. The Red Army continues to exchange blows with Alaskan troops as fighting steadily escalates...

December, 1934: After a period of quiet on both sides, the Red Army launches a series of surprise attacks along the frontline, and heavy fighting between the two armies breaks out over a small, remote airfield. With the Soviet air forces (the Voenno-Vozdushnye Sily) in control of the skies, the Alaskan Milita calls for pilots. Among the recruits is a young, shiny-faced pilot by the name of Nathaniel Hawkins...

Follow his adventures in this confused and disjointed 11 mission prequel to the long-overdue and still-to-be released sequel, Sea Dogs!"

I'm in! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

A perfect use for the rarely seen biplanes.

I like the skull and crossbones insignia. You should move the wing insignia to the center of the wing...more menacing that way.

Awesome idea, I like it!!!

But you should have the privateers in F4Us. It's only right. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

what about using seaplanes to board enemy Cargo ships?

or to bring good to hidden locations :-)

also, make some strange planes work on the carrier,
hangland have proven that nearly all planes CAN land on a carrier

Crimson Skies, anyone? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I jest, although it does have a few similar elements to the story. I can honestly say that when this is released it will be the first alternative history campaign I will have played for IL-2. (who would say no to pirates?)

Divine-Wind
06-28-2007, 08:54 PM
Aye, one of the main reasons I made this was because I was always interested in the idea of a "realistic" Crimson Skies.

Maybe afterwards I'll do a ninjas campaign! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Hey guys! Just thought I'd let you know that I'm still alive, but progress has been put on hold real quick-like, as I've been on trips and vacations and car rides for forever it seems like... (For instance, we just got back from my great-grandmother's 100th birthday yesterday, all the way in Alabama...)

But I'll be right back on the campaign as soon as possible. Provided Hurricane Dean misses Texas or doesn't rip our house apart when it hits...

As long as you don't try and think of the logistics/economy it can sort of fly,
but the pirates really don't stand a chance of holding their own on their own.

Of course if you went with backed by some nation and having better equipment ala the bad guys
in LXG then they'd last a bit longer.

The thing being that when you destroy so heavily, there's not enough to raid away to cover the
attack and maybe the next week's needs. Even the AVG needed constant support plus ground troops
to stay effective and not be overrun.

Of course if you had a nation like China or India using planes, mercs and converted freighters
as carriers (which many US escort carriers and some Japanese carriers were) pitted against real
pirates with perhaps small Japanese backing and mix in some British RN -- keeping it small....
Or even Netherlands, they had some islands colonized and producing before Japan got to them.
Heck, even France out of Indochina... could have Allieds giving support from bases, but not
to pirates but rather against them --- Mercs vs Pirates!

Divine-Wind
08-29-2007, 03:53 PM
Bah, since when are pirates bound by the laws of physics? Besides, they're really more like guidelines anyways. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

But you do have a point there. Well as long as people like the idea. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

In any case, first update in... A month? Golly. Thanks to FlatSpinMan for help on this current mission. (I owe ya one mate) And to a buddy of mine (He likes to be called Paasky... Crazy Finns...) for helping test this 3-part barndance.

Currently thinking up the middle part of the story, and still in need of skins (Yes that is very subtle *hint hint*), although Beebop and aforementioned friend are contributing a bit. In short, if I may use one of my favorite quotes:
"Do you ever wonder if he plans it all out or just makes it up as he goes along?"

Right now this is mission 8 of what I'm planning on being a 22 (or more) mission campaign. So you have that to look forward to, I guess. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Anyways, that's all for today. Tune in next time for 'The Great Escape - Part III!'

Hallo there! Just a quick update here. (No screenshots)

Working on finishing up the current three-part mission, and I went back and changed the storyline a bit so it's not as random and disjointed as it would be.
After this I think we'll hold up on the missions for a bit and work on all the air forces and other pirates that'll be in the air, as well as the planes we'll use and how certain things will work out, etc. If any of you have ideas for that, I'd surely appreciate it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Will get some screenshots up in a bit, just thought I'd give the thread a bump. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

ZOMG SCREENSHOTS!!

Sorry it's taken so long, but Filefront was doing maintenance on their gallery, so bah. No screenshots of the latest mission, mainly because we haven't really made any new ones (We being myself and me buddy, Paasky), we've just been making radical changes to the story line, so now it's even less disjointed and dismembered and deodorized. So, I will now proceed to stuff in your face a small preview of what I plan on including in later missions.

(Note that none of the skins shown are what'll be used... Well, except for the Seafire, Beaufighter, and Sea Dog skins, but besides them everything is still being worked on)

Yes, I am considering using the 109Z for the Sea Dogs in the later parts of the campaign. If not the 109Z maybe the Tempest. (It's a well-rounded plane, with a big engine and big guns, and well armored... Looks like pirate stock to me!)
Quite a few Japanese planes will also be stuck in. The Rufe is already in use, along with the H8K.
Seafire and Beaufighter are a definite yes for the RAF/RN, and the Heinkel is a maybe. If not stuck with the RAF then it's headed for the Luftwaffe pile.
The Arado, MiG-9, LaGG-3RD/Yak-15 (Not sure which), Ta-183, and Lerche, to name a few jets and exotic/weird aircraft, will also be included late in the campaign, but I'm not sure who'll get them. The Mistel will also be used once ye get to [Wait I'm not supposed to tell you].
But, there will also be plenty of cr@p plane action in the beginning though, so you don't need to worry about all that nonsensical B&Z vs. T&B stuff, at least not for a while. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Quick and dirty is how I like my dogfights, I never say.

Also expect to see a bit of life in the backround once you hit civilization, like airliners, shipping, land traffic and fender benders, etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc. (Man is that fun to type) If Il-2 had zeppelins I'd throw in a cockroach litter's worth of those, but unfortunately we've only got weather and barrage ballons. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

We're still making up all the pirate gangs and mercenary squadrons and militias and air forces as we go along, so that's fun. For example, the Corsairs' Alliance is one I thought of halfway through a mission, though I haven't stuck them in anywhere... Yet... Maybe when we get to 'Frisco. (You didn't read that)

So, that's about it for today. Now my fingers are hurting from all the typing and copy-pasting I've done.

On a side note, it randomly started raining just now, and... Wait, it just stopped. Nuts! And I thought it might get exciting outside... On another side note, Russian music is fun to listen to. I'll never get the Russians' thing for whistling, but it makes for lively music. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Okay, now I'm done.

Update time!

So first off, I finally got the first part of the campaign done. (Good-bye Hawaii!) It took me just over two months, but I has an excuse http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif - I got to find out all the intricacies of the FMB, I had to make almost all the skins (Thank goodness for templates), and I was still making up the story at the time... And now another buddy of mine, Cadyshack is what we call him, has started testing on the first 10 missions.

So now, it's on to North America. Speaking of which, a peek at San Fransisco International:
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/s/SkyCaptain/96302/fhktlgttmr.jpg
Seaplanes docked at the, well, dock

http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/s/SkyCaptain/96302/vksmonhqcb.jpg
One of two terminals at 'Frisco Intl.

http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/s/SkyCaptain/96302/siqebfdeje.jpg
A wideshot of most of the airport... Note the pretty blinking runway numbers!

http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/s/SkyCaptain/96302/nhkcfjpsjp.jpg
Terminal 2, and assorted privately-owned planes

And that's only a small peek... To give an idea of how much time and effort went into this:
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/s/SkyCaptain/96302/hsxqwvkjdx.jpg
Fully zoomed out in the FMB... There's A LOT of traffic on this map, some of which will be taken out when the Sea Dogs and assorted pirates arrive.

However, I cannot claim responsibility for any of this. Paasky did all this, all by his onesies. The idea to use lights for the runway number was his idea, as was the idea to use San Fransisco's growing airport in the campaign. He's also helped out with getting the list of planes in order, and has put up with all my story changes and at times forgetting to fill him in on what was happening.

Right now I'm trying to get an interlude track put together, although getting the camera steady and stuff is a bit difficult during lag spikes... Not to mention the physics go weird when I record... I've also gone back and added soundtracks into the briefings, so maybe the gang will have a bit of life now.

So anyways, that's about all for now. See you next time!

A very cool update for the 19th of September, also the "Talk Like a Pirate Day."

Divine-Wind
09-21-2007, 06:28 PM
Haha, I'd completely forgotten it was Talk like a Pirate Day...

Well, anyways, a small update. I've rethought how the Sea Dogs (And consequently other pirate gangs) are marked and distinguished. Instead of the usual number/letter system, planes will be distinguished from each other by way of personal markings, from noseart to paintschemes to the various markings decorating the plane. I think it looks a lot better than a bunch of planes flying around marked with D, 1, etc. And besides that I figure it fits into the pirate way of things.
I just finished on the 109Z, and I'll be starting on the Gladiator in a bit.

The downside to this is that I have to come up with a noseart or set of markings for each and every Sea Dog. On the upside, I finally got around to naming the other pilots in the gang.
Lets see how many of you can spot the references and puns I've stuck in. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

So, without further ado:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">Meet the Sea Dogs
Captain Hawkins
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/vfajwoelut.jpg
Personal Insignia: Gryphon (Segreant)
Bio: The man responsible for the Sea Dogs, Nathaniel Hawkins was born in the Industrial States of America. He wandered over much of the known world during his early years, working odd jobs to stay afloat, everything from fisherman to security pilot at a Boeing plant, before enlisting in the Royal Flying Corps when Britain entered the Great War. In 1935 he reappeared, having acquired an abandoned escort carrier and a crew to run it, the Sea Dogs. For the next two years the pirate captain pulled off a series of raids, from the Republic of Texas up to the United Soviet Socialist Republics, before catching wind of a sunken treasure off the coast of one of the Hawaiian Islands.

Jack
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/hisqwbbpwv.jpg
Personal Insignia: Sparrow
Bio: Known by most as simply Jack, Hawkins' friend from grammar school stuck by Nathaniel on most of his ventures, until he learned of his parents' deaths when their ocean liner, the Lusitania was sunk by a German U-boat. After he and Hawkins separated, with Hawkins leaving for the Royal Flying Corps and Jack enlisting in the Royal Navy, he survived having two ships torpedoed out from under him, the destruction of HMS Dreadnought II, and ended the war on board the HMS Ark Royal. After he caught wind from Hawkins of new venture, Jack joined his partner in crime (As he called him) and helped form the Sea Dogs, along with Fishe and Crockett.

Fishe
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/hybmsggwrm.jpg
Personal Insignia: Crowned Fish above the line "KingFishe"
Bio: Raised in the Republic of Texas, Robert Fishe spent much of his early life in the Gulf of Mexico, fishing, shrimping, sharking, and flying on the side. He joined the Texas Air Militia when the Dixie Border Wars ingnited between the Confederate States of America and Republic of Texas, where he met his future captain: Nathaniel Hawkins, who had been drafted after singlehandedly (Well, with the aid of Jack, that is) engaging and driving off a squadron of Confederate fighters attacking a convoy of Texan merchantmen on the Gulf of Mexico. After the skirmishes died down, he left Texas in search of Hawkins and bit of adventure, meeting up with his former wingman in Sea Haven and agreeing to join in his venture.

Crockett
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/ggsblgrgzj.jpg
Personal Insignia: Crossed Muskets
Bio: The self-professed great-grandson of Davy Crockett, James Crockett is certainly a fair shot when it comes to dogfighting. Not much is known about Crockett, unless you make the mistake of asking him about his history - He is known to spin yarns nearly as fantastic as those told about the more famous Crockett. He first met with Hawkins after being rescued by him when his plane was shot down over Louisiana during the Dixie Border Wars. After saving Hawkins' skin during an engagement with Confederate forces he was officially part of Hawkins' inner circle, along with Fishe and Jack. After the border wars ended he stuck by Hawkins and Jack, becoming Hawkins' Third Mate when the Sea Dogs were formed.

Rogers
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/cwuafcuxkm.jpg
Personal Insignia: Modified Jolly Roger
Bio: Called 'Jolly Rogers' by those who know him, Jonas Rogers often has a grin as crooked and toothy as the leer on the Skull and Crossbones. He'll laugh about anything - A downed opponent, a particularly foamy mug of grog, or the way his smile really does resemble the on stitched into the torn flag hanging from his mirror. He joined the Sea Dogs in Sea Haven, after having emptied one too many mugs, in order to pay off his debt to the bartender - An impressive $56.42.

Martlet
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/eflossiupo.jpg
Personal Insignia: Martlet (Trussed)
Bio: Edward J. Martlet is of English descent, was raised in Capetown, South Africa, and possesses the accent typical of the area, which leads to some occasional ribbing and at times some confusion. While his siblings all pursued arts, music, or literature (Or that which could be pursued around the Cape of Good Hope), he was of the more rambunctious sort, and left Africa when he could for a life of sailing. Martlet signed on with the Sea Dogs after being rescued from the island of Java by Hawkins when the merchant vessel he served on was stranded by a hurricane.

Flinn
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/apirhyliiq.jpg
Personal Insignia: Cutlass
Bio: Fancying himself a master of cutlasses, Robert Flinn is in fact rather good at quick and dirty dogfighting, even if his swordsmanship is subpar (For a pirate). Stuck in Sea Haven looking for work, broke, and desperate, he joined the Sea Dogs, mainly to get away from the enormous debts he owned in Sea Haven. Since then he has become a proficient pilot, and a permanent part of the crew.

Klaus
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/ugganazuuo.jpg
Personal Insignia: "Flying Dutchman"
Bio: Only those close to him know his real name. To the rest he goes by the Flying Dutchman, Dutchy, or just Klaus. Of Dutch descent, it seemed natural he should work for the Dutch East India Company as an escort pilot, where the large, quiet Hollander gained a reputation as a daring, honorable pilot. Shortly after his arrival at a trading outpost on Java, he was shot down by Hawkins during a raid, and after the fight rescued when the Gemini Star stopped to pick up survivors. Once on board he recognized his attacker, and his hospitality, and in keeping with his own peculiar code of honor signed on with the crew when asked.

Kole
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/eifcxxvgby.jpg
Personal Insignia: Pickaxe and Coal
Bio: Johnathan Kole is a tough, brawny man and a skilled fighter. His roaring laugh and quick wit is hidden underneath this very well. He worked for several years as a miner, delving into the earth in search of coal, gold, silver, ore, you name it. Once his superiors discovered his talent for flight, they reassigned Kole from the sweltering tunnels of Virginia to the cold world of a transport pilot, where he flew everything from the hulking liners of the sky to the nimble bush planes as he ferried his precious goods across the world, from Russia to Mexico, Alaska to India, from the Confederacy to Africa, pursued by rival companies and pirate gangs. Stranded in Sea Haven and down on his luck after losing a shipment of ore to pirates, he saw an possible escape from his troubles with the Sea Dogs, and promptly joined up. Out of all the pilots, most of the crew consider him one of the top three.

Jinkins
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/qzceodnvdw.jpg
Personal Insignia: "Lucky 13"
Bio: The 13th crewmember to sign on with Hawkins, Ryan Jinkins seems to be plagued with more luck than he can handle; He can survive being chased by three bandits in the morning, only to lose his earnings in a card game in the evening. During lunch he will be stuck with a month old can of tomato soup and fresh meatloaf. For all this, he is the best mechanic onboard the Gemini Star, a skilled pilot, and is generally thought to have the best eyes on the ship. But he still gets shot down the most.

Ravenscroft
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/aflilqdcyf.jpg
Personal Insignia: Raven (Trussed, and bearing an unknown symbol)
Bio: ?

Tex
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/xspguuwbhn.jpg
Personal Insignia: Crossed Pistols
Bio: Hailing from the Republic of Texas, and very originally dubbed 'Tex' by his peers, Dexter Irons has a steady hand and a very good aim. He joined the Texas Air Militia when he was 19, and flew for several years, surviving the Dixie Border Wars, the forays made by Louisiana into Texas, and the constant Mexican and Indian border skirmishes, before heading out into the wild blue yonder. He met up with Hawkins at Sea Haven, and signed on with his then newly-formed crew. Since then he has been with the gang on almost every major raid.

Sparks
Personal Insignia: ?
Bio: A down on his luck navigator in Sea Haven, Jimmy Hayes is the helmsman, master, and chief caretender for the Gemini Star. Stricken with chronic airsickness, he is doomed to a station no higher than the Gemini's bridge; Any higher and he is plagued by a light head and a queasy stomach.
But that's just fine by Sparks, helplessly lovesick with the sea.

Great skins! A excellent choice of plane for the pirates.
You have spent a bit of time on this and it shows. Those pilot profiles make a great backstory.

Do you know what time it is?

I know, 'WTF he's on an update rampage!' But now that I've gotten the first part of the campaign done (North America will be really fun to do... Trying to find maps that are big enough but still fit the landscape will be kinda tough) I can't seem to stop putting stuff together. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/shady.gif

Anyways, today we've got some screenshots of the Sydney Ducks hidden base.
"The Sydney Ducks, having grown from a small-time gang of ruffians and delinquents to a full-fledged pirate organization spanning the state of California, have relocated from San Francisco to the Barbary Coast of California, a stretch of coastline that is plagued with piracy, villiany, and a host gangs, from small-time pirates to some of the largets pirate and mercenary gangs and organizations in the known world."

That's all for right now. I'll try and get some screenshots of the pirate town, situated further down the coast. Right now there are about 30,000 objects sitting in the pirate town, which makes for really fun loading times.

Quick update from the mission I'm working on.

I'm sort of going backwards (Last I checked brave Sir Paasky was working on the Sea Dogs' entrance into San Francisco), so things are a little funky right now.

As you can see, Corsairs and 109Zs make for an interesting mix - One can't turnfight for beans and the other has 6 peashooters compared to 4 (5 with the gunpod) deathstar lasers:

Hey guys, small update. I've taken a break from mission building as it seem's I've been struck by a bad case of writer's block - I'll sit there to think about what the mission's going to be about and I end up thinking about what's going to happen on the weekend or where my Medal of Honor case is (I need the code on the back to install Breakthrough, so of course the case is missing), or some other totally unrelated topic.

So, no screenshots, or new editions of Air Action Weekly, but! I did doodle up a new poster in the meantime:
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/ubttsmpfrp.jpg
(Would've been about 200 pixels bigger and have a lot of little details stuck on but I had to keep resizing and editing it to get it under Filefront's 750kb file limit...)

I also have a revised version of the poster on the first page. Not that much was revised... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

So, that's all, and hopefully next time I'll have some real news for ya'll.

Hallo thar, gang! I've slowly begun to work my way back into the mission building process. Slowly because I'm still working out the kinks in my new and improved (At least I think so) story. Jeez, if I thought it'd be this hard to make a script, I would have made an historical campaign. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Anyways, while I was taking a break I jotted down all the missions I planned on doing (With a stylish black fountain pen), and of course that list has totally been disfigured now. So now I'm going over the missions I do have and am fixing all the little things I messed up or left out. I also made a bunch of new skins (As in 5-6) and redid the ones I've 'finished:'
New Beaufighter skins, in RAF and FAA variations!

http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/ppabxbnrpj.jpg
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/yrlcepmtzf.jpg

http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/wcqrcrxfqj.jpg

New Blenheim skin!

http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/ampybkgsom.jpg

Finally, a decent Gladiator paintscheme! (Though I forgot to get the lower surfaces painted) I know the roundels aren't exactly right, but screw that. A fictional campaign set in another universe is entitled to at least 50 historical inaccuracies!
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/vblgdaknsl.jpg
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/dwzqzwjejt.jpg

And lastly, a Sea Dogs Corsair:
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/ayxknijgok.jpg
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/apotvpdqrh.jpg

I know, I said I'd decided on the 109Z, but when I thought about it the ridiculously cool plane that is the 109 zwilling was just too much of change from the J8A - It was fast and sucked at turning while the Glad was slow and could turn inside a one-winged pigeon.

So anyways, that's about all for now. No new missions to talk about (Yet), just skins and an update.

Oh, and I've also gotten a sketchy release date for this blasted thing: (Are ya ready kids? Okaaaay!)

May 1st

That's prone to change without notice, but hey! At least it's out there. That gives me 7 months, more or less, to finish up the 30 missions I have planned, the 30-odd skins I'll need to finish, and the hundreds of hot pockets, bowls of dry cereal, and drinks I'll have to consume.

I've also got an idea I've been kicking around for another campaign, provided Sea Dogs does okay:
http://static3.filefront.com/images/personal/p/PillsburyComman/97299/fhhxdtqvvw.jpg

But first things first - Sea Dogs has gotta be finished and booted off my computer before I can begin to contemplate creating another campaign. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

That's all tonight (Or this morning, for those of you in Euro-land, I guess) folks. Next time I'll try to have something remotely interesting. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Thank ye. I forgot to mention that Serval's Corsair template provided the, well, template for the skin. (And just about every other Corsair paintscheme) Still adjusting some of the weathering effects on it, so when you see it next it'll look better.

On that subject, thanks to Turnipkiller for his awesome Glad template, Jester for his Beaufighter template, and Imme for his Blenheim template on Flying-Legends.

And that doesn't begin to cover the enormous amounts of templates I've used and gone over...

D-W,
Don't know if this is important at all, but in the "Parade of Aces, Pt. 1", first installment, you've written, "Best known known for their role...." I only mention this in case it's stuff to be released with your campaign. And it does look great!

Divine-Wind
11-01-2007, 08:20 PM
Ah, that was more of meant to be a bit of history. You won't actually see the Dixie Border Wars (Seeing as how they're already over), but you'll hear about them.
But the Groundhogs will play a part in, well, nevermind, you'll see when it's released. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif So yeah, that stuff sort of will be in the campaign in a way. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered with the skins and the attempt at making it look like it was scanned from an old magazine. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Bump.

This looks awesome and I can't wait for it.

Though I have to say that I am disappointed by the change to the over-hyped, over-popular ensign eliminator. Far too cliche and boring. Far too many fanbois for that clean-up detail glory hound that didn't do any real work.

The 109Z was a far more interesting choice. And if USN planes are required, the Hellcat would be more logical I think - more plentiful, easier to maintain, easier to fly, easier to land, more manuverable, better visibility over the nose (well, IRL anyway - just not in Oleg-world, but nevermind), and of course, cheaper (which gets back to easier to maintain (and acquire)).

Anyway, I still look forward to this release. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Heh, thanks for the bump. I just sifted through eight pages trying to find my thread before I thought that someone might have posted in it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

I suppose the Corsair is overhyped, but I wanted to get all the exotic, strange, and semi-cool planes in game. The Corsair is fairly radical looking, as is the 109Z, but the F4U is equipped for carrier landings, which the 109 is not, and it handles sort of like a newer, faster Gladiator, which the 109 also doesn't.

Plus the F4UC has four death-star cannons, which makes for some pretty fast dogfights, and that's mainly what most of the action in the campaign will be like. Also, it carries more payload variations than the Hellcat: Tiny Tims and napalm as opposed to the standard rockets and bombs. And, you know, Corsairs and Pirates, as someone mentioned earlier.
And besides that, VF-17 (the first 'Jolly Rogers' incarnation) was the second squadron to recieve the Corsair, and one of the most successful.

That's just my reasoning behind the Corsair, anyways. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif But you will fly the 109Z in the campaign, rest assured. I just have to figure out where...

This is a great idea !!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif i really hope to see it soon (apparently not). looking forward to it anyway.
I like those with a lot of imagination.
I am not sure it was mentioned in the thread. there was a "Crimson Skies"-like mini campaign released some while ago called "Feu celeste" (12 missions). It had great skins and a good story. The campaign focused more on navigation than on fights.
Unfortunately the briefings are in French.
I thought I had found it on the Checksix website but apparently it is not there.

A couple of stupid questions I have. I'd be really indebted if someone could help me out here. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

1) I've been recently experimenting with the FMB and downloaded a tutorial, but it doesn't mention how I can "turn" planes around so that they face a direction of my choice. Anyone know how to do this?

2) Those V2 rockets here, are they already included in "1946" or does one have to download them somewhere. If so, where?

Thanks! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Divine-Wind

@Cawimmer:
Heh, thanks!

1) If you're trying to change the direction of static aircraft, use the numpad keys. (I.e., 7 to rotate left, 9 to rotate right, 6 to go right in bigger chunks, etc.) If you want to get a non-static plane to go a certain direction, set another waypoint in the direction you want to go.

2) They're under 'Objects,' though I forgot what number.

@ Carella:
Thanks, though it's been a pain sometimes to get things to look interesting. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Do you think you could get me a link to that campaign, if you find it? (You can PM or post it here, my e-mail is still more p0rked than Porky the pig)

1. If you are speaking of taking off..."Think like Oleg" (-Zeus-cat).
This was the advise I got from him when I asked the same question many moons ago. Place the takeoff icon at the end of the airstrip you want to planes to leave from and the second waypoint in the direction you want them to fly. Yes, I know, the planes line up on one end of the field and you would think that's where the takoff icon belongs. But no, since they become airborne further down the runway, you place the icon on that end. Make sense? I thought so. (That's what I thought too)

2. Rockets and launchers are in their own separate category in the "View" menu. Look for "Rocket".

Hope that helped.

As of now, May 1st '08, at the extreme latest. This way I'll be able to keep myself to a schedule (Or something like one) so I won't be all over the place and have it released the same time BoB is. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Probably sooner, though. Most of what's been taking so long lately is my story... First it was random raids... Then it was a search for a lost treasure... Now, well, now it's something between random raids and a search for a lost treasure.

Of course, just when I could use a good story all the Hollywood writers go on strike!

I have a question. Who would be allied with who? I imagine the South and the United Kingdom would be allied with each other, and the USA and CSA at an uneasy peace. However, I don't think the CSA and Texas should be at war, as the CSA was founded on the right to leave the Union and would be awfully hypocritical for being at war with Texas over that. Then again, maybe the Texans wanted something. Or the Texans were really the aforementioned Ninjapirates out for revenge. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Hai

Still working on it here and there, but it's going a lot slower than when I started... As you might have figured out by now... Anyways...

To be honest, right now I'm on a bit of a sub kick, so I've been spending a lot of time tooling around the atlantic with SH3. (And wishing I had a computer that could tool around the pacific with SH4) But! Sea Dogs has not been forgotten... I've got too much time and computer space poured into it for that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

So just a small update, nothing life-changing. You know, like a hurricane. (Possibly even one named Dolly)

Oh, and to answer Mobious22's question: I just kind of figured that maybe the CSA would be looking to expand a little, and maybe Texas would make a good place to start. Or something. Not like a major war, just little land feuds and skirmishes.

To be honest, I really don't know. I admit that I haven't worked on this for... Well, a while now.

I'd hate to disappoint everyone I've gotten excited over this, but to be honest, I'm starting to lose interest in this myself. Well, maybe not interest... More like my inspiration. I hopped into the mission builder yesterday and sat there for 5 minutes wondering what to do.
I guess it's not so much "What the eff do I do," it's more, "How the eff do I do this?"

So at the moment I'm trying to get things going again, but for now I wouldn't get my hopes up about this. What I would get my hopes up about is FSM's newest campaign, which looks fantastic [shameless plug]. In fact, I think I'll go play it now, as soon as I figure out what I need....

Release the stuff, man. You've done lots of work on it. Tidy up a few loose ends, make a quick fill-in-the -gaps mission or two and get her out there.

And by the way, what's so bad about half-arsed campaigns http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif?

Haha, I can get pretty half-arsed mate. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif But thanks, I just might finish this yet!

Edit: Also... I'm debating possibly doing this with teh mod. I have no idea how people would feel about this, but there are so many planes that would be open for use (the little U2VS!!! comes to mind) that would be perfect for this.

Thoughts? I am/was/were making this for the community, after all.

So I spent 2-3 hours easy last night, putting together a cargo run mission involving C-47's and a massive ground assault and trapped defenders and hundreds of those awesome new soldier models shooting it out like little brown army men. And then I went to bed without saving.

So of course this morning I discover that a power surge or something had reset my computer during the night. http://www.battlefield.no/forum/style_emoticons/bf/iiiiik.gif

Yay, I loved crimson skies. This is awesome. Now, if we only had magnetic missles and huge zeppelin models (I WANT ZEPPELINS).

I loved the customization of the planes in crimson skies, from the loaded to the brim huge bombers (of which I flew a lot, mostly because they were almost indestructible...) and the feather with a engine "buggers".

And being able to determine the load order of the ammunition so you can have beeper missle then seeker missle then beeper etc.

I always wondered what a Crimson Skies flight sim type thing would be like. This is great stuff.

Can't wait for this to be done.

To be honest, I don't really have any truly finished missions. I just knocked out the basic frame for each one then moved to the next, that way I could figure out where the bugger I was going.

On the topic of zeppelins, I hopped on over to AAA the other day and asked about a possible zeppelin object. Not a working, movable aircraft, just a static object. Still waiting to see if anyone is willing to model one, but several people have said they'd love one.

Even a static zeppelin would add so much to Sea Dogs. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Nothing to show?? Look at this thread! 8 pages, 150 posts and almost 17000 views! And a lot of screenshots as well! Please, mate, don't feel guilty! Everybody who's taken a look at this thread knows that you've put a lot of hard work into this campaign. It would be a shame to give it all up!

I would be very interested in flying Sea Dogs, and I'm pretty sure a lot of others would too! Remember that the excited posts are only the tip of the iceberg. A lot of people have viewed this thread, but they didn't all reply. That doesn't mean they don't like what they see! Also, there are even more people that haven't seen this thread (yet). I, myself, for instance, only stumbled accross this thread yesterday, and I've been browsing these forums for years. My prediction is, that after you release the campaign, the word will spread very fast accross the community and - given the amount of work you've put in and the "awesomeness-factor" - there will be a lot of positive comments, encouraging even more players to download and play. Heck, some virtual movie makers even might be interested in making a movie out of it! I sure as hell can see the potential!

So, I beg to you, good Sir: please please please finish this campaign! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Don't worry about the time it will take you. We all know that quality products take more time to produce. If you are suffering a "writers block" just step back for a while and go do something else. It's evident that you have a very creative mind and I'm confident that you'll be able to finish Sea Dogs and that a lot of people will be very grateful for it! wow this is a cool idea.

if you just have the skins and some basic concepts and storyline, anyone could put together some missions for you, maybe be a group project.

what planes were you thinking of using, and what maps?

I like to tinker around with the FMB a lot, if I could figure out how to import skins and had some guidelines, I might want to try and make some missions for this. only problem is I haven't really tried any player-made campaigns yet so I don't know what people like to encounter when they play.

maybe try and release one mission just to give a flavor of what you want the campaign to feel and look like, and see if anyone else wants to help. it's such a cool concept.

I liked the carrier based on land, I would create more interesting stuff with the objects menu but they all are so confusing because they say like "object 202"...is there a program out there that gives you a name of what they are?

If I could just get some skins installed for the pirate insignia, I would love to make some missions for this.

Have you made any missions at all that are available? I didn't see whether you have completed any in this thread but I didn't read every post. It might be good to just put out one mission to whet peoples' appetites.

I thought an interesting starter mission might be to have some CSA transport float planes (Ju-52's) flying to meet an imperial Russian submarine, which is offshore waiting for the CSA to deliver some gold or scientists or something. Shoot down the transports to deny them their satisfaction, yarr, but they be escorted by plucky CSA fighters. etc.

Hey I have an Idea for a quick misssion with your basic plot but I dont know if it will fit in

Ok it is 1940 and Russia is invading a major port in alaska and you are hired to defend the port along with the Alaska milita (B-17D's)who's air base is up the coast 10 grids. You and your crew are incharge of destroying the russian long range maritime escorts (TB3-SBD with I-16's) and the head escort cruiser while a fleet of pirate boats attack the enemy Battleship while they wait for the alaskin navy (one cruiser)

You are in I-153's and U2's

D-W ... fascinating concept, shame we never got Gibbages flyable PBY it would have been perfect.

If you have any use for prewar historical RAF Gladiators I am working through a series of skinpacks for a few different sqdns incorporating 3 plane VICs of A,B and C flight for each squadron.

Feel free to use these or any future prewar skinpacks in your project.

The current WIP is 72 squadron hopefully uploading next week.

Already completed - two skinpacks for 3 Sqdn based at Kenley (1937 and 1938).

Does anyone know if there's a way without mods to "break" the way planes are split between red and blue teams in Il-2? It would definitely be cool to have the pirates flying 109Z's and Corsairs, but they'd have to be fighting different teams in each mission.

Also if I get started on this I'd like to find some CSA skins, I'm sure there are some out there. If anyone has a link that would be good.

Divine-Wind
11-19-2008, 05:18 PM
Not sure what you mean by breaking the teams, but if you want to pit red planes vs red planes/blue planes vs blue planes, all you need are skins.

You can find some excellent CSA skins here (http://www.balbo-net.org/). Just go to 'Downloads,' and then on to 'Vigilantes C.S.A. Skins.'

Ok well I quickly put together a mission...nothing special or very complicated. I tried one with the Gladiator but damn if I can't stand that plane...instead I made a cheesy pirate skin for an I-16 and flew that instead...

The gist is that you take off from your carrier with the mission of downing some Confederate States of America Ju-52 float planes that are delivering gold and nuclear scientists to some Tsarist Russian submarines stationed in the Mediterranean. The Soviet Russians (who sold you the surplus I-16's, VERY CHEAP COMRADE!!!) hired you for this mission to aid them in their quest for eternal revolution, but really all you care about is the booty and glory!!! Ba5tard5word
11-20-2008, 01:12 AM
That was the cannon one, I think the SPB. I can't stand planes that only have 7.62mm loaded in, takes forever to take anything down.

I dunno about the pilot skin thing, I think the game may be really picky about the images. I just tried messing around and making a Porco Rosso one by pasting his face on a pilot skin, and it wouldn't show up in the menus when I tried to select it in the game.

And thanks for the kind words on the CSA skin...I looked into skinmaking and it looks complicated and it requires decent design software that I don't have and don't feel like buying, plus I don't really have any artistic or graphical design skills anyway (looks like you do though!) so I think I'll leave the skins to others unless I'm really desperate and just want to do a copypaste of something simple.

Ah, I myself love the green jellybeans. Not sure why, although they do look awesome. (A bunch of 4x Maxim AAA artillery unit scattered around a map really add to the atmosphere of a mission, even if it doesn't really do a whole lot of damage)

As for skinning, you might want to check out The GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/), it can be just as good as PSP/Photoshop. A good template can also make things easier. (Check out Simmer's Paintshop (http://www.simmerspaintshop.com) for some, as well as good tutorials)

Interesting base setup, nice details.

Well I messed around some more and here's what I came up with...

PIRATE BASE ALPHA!!!

Well it's not much to look at but it took a while to put together and I found some cool objects. As you can see, there's a Palace where the pirates hang out, a sports stadium where they can exercise and play rugby, various fuel storage things...I couldn't figure out how to place AA so it would be on the surface of these things, so I just plopped in some destroyers...unfortunately they got overzealous when they saw the enemy and ended up blowing up the palace and the water storage... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Ooh, very interesting. You both have quite a flair for object placement. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

By the way, you might want to check out this (http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/50910533/m/5491082192) thread for ideas, or to see what you can do with objects.

Well, I finally bit the bullet and decided to finally make my own skins again. Finding generic yet marked Russian I-153's and I-16's is so difficult. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Hopefully the Curtiss P-36's and TB-3's you see will also be properly decked out when this is released.

Now I just need to find a CR-42 template...

Alright, well I spent some more time tinkering with the FMB...pretty fun to do so, kinda like when I was a kid and I'd sit around all day making weird stuff with legos...

anyway...after Base Alpha was sadly destroyed by the CSA's Mediterranean Mercenaries, the Pirates retreated to their secondary base, Base Beta, situated in an undisclosed location in the English Channel (of all places)

Here we see the Pirates' pride and joy, a captured Russian battleship, the "S.S. Plunderer," moored at Beta's ornate northern shipyard...

Here is the Southern shipyard, where private cargo ships are loaded and unloaded...

And the Eastern shipyard, where more activity is seen...

Hmm...yeah 4.09 has some cool stuff and maps, I tried it a while ago but I didn't like how it slowed down the Il-2 menu for some reason--I'm hoping they fix that when the complete version is released (or has it been? or still a beta?)

Looks like the Slovakia objects have stuff that has something similar to sea walls..that is the one thing I wish I could use, like to create an artificial island. There are those weird jigsaw-shaped castle island thingy objects with a wall but I can't figure out how to put them together properly.

Turkey day update!

No screenshots, but I'm currently figuring out the last mission. I've cut it down from 15 missions to 11, because it's hard to come up with ideas for 15 missions, and also because 10 missions is too short. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

It will be a grandiose mission; epic, immersive, and incredibly laggy. There is also the chance your IQ will drop a couple of points after playing through it.

Anyways, after this I will take a break and figure out what to do with the actual campaign while you all poke holes in my teaser. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Hmm... Did you get the soundmod or the unified installer? I don't recall any problems with the unified version, but in any case, go to the Fixes/Patches section and download the English Career Language fix. That should fix your translation problems.

Gladiator is probably my favorite plane in the sim (though the JABO version of the Emil comes a close second) but it does need to be flown properly or it will bite you. Its not a forgiving yank and bank arcade monster but then again none of the biplanes are.

The guns may only be 0.303 brownings but there are 4 of them, you just need to get up close and personal (50 metres or less is good) and aim for specific spots on the target (rather than spamming cannon on the basis that a couple of lucky hits anywhere on the target is enough to take them out).

Actually the number of flyable biplanes to choose from in the unmodded sim is very limited (CR42 Fiat, I153, Gladiator) though that may change if we ever get the Avia rumored to be possible in 4.09 final.

Ba5tard5word
12-02-2008, 10:35 PM
yeah well I definitely suck at the biplanes...what I needed to do with the Gladiator was get high and then be able to keep up speed, instead I was dumb and flying low and then trying to catch up with enemies who I didn't realize would be flying way higher than me. Is the Glad withs skis modeled to fly slower than one without, or do I just stink that bad? Seemed very underpowered, but again this is the only time I've tried flying one for more than a few minutes. I did ok with the Fiat though.

No idea whether skis effect performance in game.

The Fiat has 150 more horsepower, is faster at most altitudes, climbs better and has heavier guns - a pair of 12.7 mm Breda.

The Gladiator turns way better and has more (albiet lighter) guns and ammo.

In a sense the CR42 Falco is the B&Z plane in this match up. The Fiat is probably the better plane I just personally prefer the feel of the Gladiator.

Note that the Gladiator *IS* underpowered for 1940. But not underpowered for 1937 when this scenario is set. The problem is we are missing most of the early 30's planeset that the Gladiator would easily dominate. In game it often ends up matched against later model aircraft and is outclassed.

Hehe, you're not the only one with biplane troubles, BS. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif I find it fun to mix it up in Gladiators and Fiats, but the peashooters and somewhat limited views mean I can never get more than one or two kills before I'm either out of ammo or out of luck.

As with Galway, I'll generally take the Gladiator over the Falco, partly because I can never score hits with the Bredas for some reason. Also, the lighting on the Gladiator is much better. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

As for skis, I don't think it affects flight, but on takeoffs it seems to slow the Gladiator down a lot.

Anyways, glad you liked the mission layouts, at least. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif If you really get into it, cr@p plane furballs can get pretty exciting, and coming out on top is pretty satisfying.

This is roughly what you need in the way of markings .. similar to the Brits but different order for colors in the roundel (RED BLUE WHITE) and a large white center.

http://www.century-of-flight.net/Aviation%20history/photo_albums/images10/58.jpg

I am sure someone on the Russian forums would have done a WWI hack but finding it may be tricky, try posting on the paint schemes forum here at UBI.

By the way another excellent source of colorful skins for a more general alternative history was the Spanish Civil War as you had literally dozens of factions to choose from.

Anarchists fighting Nazi's anyone ?

For example ...this colorful p11C hack is a Republican Aero A102 I knocked up a while back ...

Thats the problem with mission building you end up having to becoming a skinner as well.

Microsoft Paint really will not work that well. If you want to have a go at making your own download a program called GIMP - its free. Then go to simmerspaintshop and read up the basic tutorials.

BTW ... if you are pasting the roundels on to someone elses unmarked skin you need at the very least to acknowledge where the original skin came from when you publish the campaign.
