View Full Version : Stutter Problem

I'm @ my wits end. After the patch 3.01 I've had a stutter problem. (this continues into the beta patch as well). While running the black death track my frames are the same as always, but I get two or three instances of stutter each time I play it. The video gets choppy for a second and the audio sounds like a CD skipping.

Disabling sound eliminates the stutter, so I suspect it's sound related. I've done everything I can think of to tweak the sound w/o much effect. Turning down the sound settings helps, but doesn't get rid of the stutter.

Things I've ruled out:
I've got a great PSU w/ plenty of power
My CPU temp is mid 40s during full load
Sound and video have their own IRQs
re-installed sound drivers
MemTest run and OK
No Spy-ad-ware or virus
Nothing new running in background
On board sound disabled

Got to start and then run. Type in dxdiag. Then go to sound and set the sound to "no acceleration" This got rid of my stutters altogether.

From what I have been told on these boards that when your sound card is part of your motherboard you can't use sound acceleration.

Might be worth a look.Good luck.

I don't understand what you mean badatit, I just installed the latest 4 in 1's the other day, unless I screwed something up.

sopwithkennel, I don't have onboard sound, I have a Santa Cruz card. I've tried using every HW acceleration setting except for no acceleration, I'm not sure using no acceleration is a good idea, but @ this point I'll give anything a shot.

I've read that some via 4in1 AGP drivers are having problems with SP2. The fix is simple enough (to test). It might be worth a try.

if interested read here (http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.cfm?catid=30&threadid=62007&enterthread=y)

Another thought.
I had an "old" epox board, that simply would not function correctly, if the video, sound, and 4in1 drivers were not installed in a certain order. They can be tricky on some setups. Good luck.

EDIT:Also, you could experiment with the TB control panel install, driver version, and sound patches for your Santa Cruz.

For what it's worth, I get these stutters and hangs too (on-line). They remind me of the PRE-dedicated server patch days. I'm gonna see if "that" patch fixes things, before I start pulling my hair out. My system is pretty stout, and well configured.

Here's a stab in the dark! When I was using my Santa claus sound card, I had my best luck with a driver provided directly by Santa Cruz's website. Unfortunately, I don't see it available at their website any longer. According to the Device Manager information, it is driver 5.12.4193

I'd e-mail it to you, but it is kinda a big file. If you can't find it, get with me on MSN Messenger and I'll send it to you via MSN Messenger. I gottum cable so it will transfer well at my end at least.

chipset drivers- without knowing the chipset your mobo has, impossible to advise.

sound acceleration- NEVER emulate a sound card, (no hardware acceleration), unless an emergency. Your card should operate at Standard without problems.

Intuition- Since the release of PF, many people o/cing are experiencing system instability. Like you, some have sound issues, try to solve them, and fail. When they retrun to default settins, problems dissappear. The point of the analogy is PF is stressing system settings resulting in instabilty. Recheck settings and patch installation sequence. If its been awhile, a fresh install may be in order. Your call.
I also get a few brief studders in Black Death, as does everyone, but without sound errors.

I'm so with steve v on this overclocking thing. The game should be installed when you are at stock speeds and if it behaves funny when you overclock again, you need to back off. The argument that "it ran ok before" just doesn't make it. Think about this for a minute. The game is now more demanding of your PC. Then, over time, your CPU to a slight degree loses its ability to run at a certain clock speed with stability. This same thing happens with RAM and I believe it is the RAM in most cases that is flaking out when people run into trouble ovewrclocking. The fact that Cousin Billy's operating system hasn't thrown up an error code does not impress me. You have to get hundreds to thousands of misreads and miswrites before Cousin Billy will tell you a thing. By the time it tells you IL-2.exe is shutting down to prevent damage or you get a blue screen with error codes, you are way down the line on errors.

I'd advise anyone who has the capability to overclock who is considering upgrading RAM to get 3200 RAM even though 2100 or 2700 RAM will do. The latencies of 3200 RAM are not any greater and in fact, 2700 RAM is more expensive than 3200 RAM at www.newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com) at least. This way, you can overclock without wondering if the RAM is freaking out and just crank it up to the capability of the CPU.

Thanks guys.

My chipset is KT400

I've never overclocked anything on my rig

I tried no hardware acceleration, and the sound was dismal. I didn't keep this setting long enough to see if the stutters were gone, kind of a cure is worse than the disease deal.

I'm going to try the new Santa Cruz driver and see how that goes. Failing that, I'll switch to onboard sound and see if that makes any difference.

Version - 455vp1 is the correct driver package for the KT 400.

When I first got PF, had two solid lockups the first night using my settings for FB/AEP. Dialed the settings way down in both ingame and ati control panel to obtain stability. You may have to do the same.

OK, I tried the new drivers... no joy

I tried removing the SC and using onboard sound...no joy

on the Nvidia control panel I use

no AA
no AF
V sync on

I've tried turning down all the settings on the sound card, including forcing EAX 1 ... still get the stutter

I've tried using the lowest graphics settings (very low)... still get the stutters.

I'm pulling my hair out. I've already re-installed the game, but I'm going to do it again, this time I'm going to benchmark w/ the black death after FB 1.0, AEP 2.0, PF 3.0, 3.01, and finally the beta patch. This way I'll be able to determine if it's something to do w/ the beta or my rig.

OK, I just installed FB 1.0 and I got the stutters. So there must be something up w/ my rig.... it's got nothing to do w/ the beta patch @ all. I'm @ a loss however and don't know what to do next. Maybe I was incorrect about the sound being an issue. I'm going to try some new Nvidia drivers and see what that dose for me.
