View Full Version : I didn't think it happened in SHIII/GW

I just turned away from a convoy attack, after taking out a Blackswan ( one hit, one giant fireball), and after making good my escape using my patented evasion tactic, my sonar guy picks up two distant warships in roughly the same spot.
Rather than stopping, I check the nav map, they are both stationary at the position of the Blackswan that blew up. Are they picking up survivors? Or does this mean they are about to conduct a thorough sweep of the area and I should make myself scarce

Hi Huey,

I'll answer your question, if you answer mine! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I believe they have stopped to enjoy a pint of bitter and then plan on hunting you down like dog! Perhaps it is a simulation of picking up the survivors. The reason I say this is I damaged a merchant in a convoy. It was still making 6 knots and lagging behind the convoy. A corvette kept pace with it off the starboard beam and would not leave other than to chase me off as I went in for the kill. Sometimes I have seen ships just floating in the middle of no where apparently at the end of the plotted run set up my the developers. Perhaps that is the case with these two but I doubt as the convoy is moving on and logic would dictate that they should also go. Let us know what happens with them.

I swear, the Dev's of SH3 sure put their hearts into this project. Every time I do a patrol, or read the forum, I learn something new about this game. When does the realism stop ? I hope it doesn't, they have done a remarkable job, and can't be more pleased.

Also to add, the community they have inspired with this forum. Sorry to go a little off topic, but I felt it was another opportunity to say this.

Okedoke,
you've gone to depth for evasive reasons, use the knot meter and crank her back to 2kt. look at your nav map and follow the warship contacts. use the pencil to place an X every so-often to allow you to plot them. Find the one sitting still as he is the lookout, the others are just harrasing you hoping you'll give yourself away.
Move at the slow or still one. By the time you've got to him, he's already started back up and handed the lookout/listening job onto one of the others. He'll be heading over the top of you on his way to join in the hunt. By this time, you are too far away from the new listener, and the new attacker is moving too fast to hear you.
This takes time, patience, nerve and no sharp or sudden turns. Don't even lift your speed during the dc's because if you've done this right, the dc's won't be near enough to hurt you.
I will do a separate post next week c/w screenies showing how to do this. I did it again last night, it's no fluke

Hehe yah I was on a convoy and hit a couple of ships then went evasive, when I came back up one was dead in the water, and the convoy was almost over the horizon.

But sure enough as soon as I started my attack on the crippled ship here come the escorts.

Had to wait them out again which was easy as I was under before they got close, then pop up and finish the job. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

The RN were officially forbiden to remain staionary beside a sinking merchant in order to pick up survivors (google Zafaaran and Stocport too see why, or check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Convoy_rescue_ship). A corvette or destroyer is more valuable than those merchant marine sailors.
Unofficially, they did it anyway.

Is it just me, or does anybody else think "John Travolta" when they view Fritz Newbhoff's sig banner?

Hi K-61
To me it looks more like Robert Mitchum (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000053/)
