When ever I patrol I usually end up coming home with my aft torpedo tube still loaded because I never seem to find a situation when it comes up that I could get a good shot off with it. So I was just wondering do you use your aft torpedo tubes very often and if you do in what situations do you tend to use them?

I use it, when a I am being chased by a destroyer, or, when I hit one ship with my front tube, but she doesnt sink, only stops. At that time, I use aft torpedo, to sink her.

I try to intentionally use all but the last one on my way to the objective area, generally on merchant/cargo ships. This way, I intentionally use them at my leisure.

I leave the last one for the way back to port for the same purpose or as mentioned, just in case I meet a destroyer.

It would be a pity not to use them.

I use them quite a lot. I almost always come home torpedoless, unless my sub has sustained significant damage to the point where continuing the patrol becomes unduly hazardous.

I typically use the aft torpedos once I sneak my way into the center of a convoy, where I can wreak havok on adjacent colums simultaneously. I'll also use the aft torpedos if my fore torpedos have been expended.

Besides, D¶nitz looks at me funny when he learns I've returned home without expending all torpedos aboard the sub. Then I end up peeling potatos for a month whilst the remainder of the crew drink beer and chase all the fr¤uleins around. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

I come home with torpedo and with zero deck gun ammo if weather permits. My sub is not allowed to go home with rounds chambered.

SO last night I destroyed an entire convoy alone with the escorts (minus the neutrals) but had to follow the convoy for a week because weather would not permit the use of the deck gun.

Came home with over 120 HE rounds and zero torpedoes for 90,000T in ships sunk with a VIIB Sub. I€m sure I€d gone over 100K Tons if not for the weather bugs.

I currently use a type IX so I get two aft tubes which is a real bonus in convoys. What I'll do is get in the middle of the convoy and fire at ships both in front and behind me. I can generally sink 3 ships nearly simultaniously. With a Type VII they are much less useful however as you only have one tube and there isn't much you can reliably sink with just one torpedo. That single tube is useful against destroyers and small merchants though.

I've sunk a couple of destroyers using aft tubes. If you are being hunted and find yourself heading away from your pursuers you can normally get into a perfect firing position for an aft shot. Of course firing a torpedo will most likely let them know your new position.

I was under the impression that real life submarine commanders would fire the fore tubes, at a convoy for example, and then turn around to bring the aft tube to bear and fire that as well.

Happy hunting!

I usually use rear torpedoes on isolated merchants. I line up my sub facing away the target's plotted course, and fire my aft torpedo from close.

If you have time to prepare the position, you can use those precioussssssss torpedoes and save the fore ones for more cubmersome situations

I agree. I use the aft tube when I have plenty of time, and I know the ship will probably go with a single toropedo (I'm using a VII-B, so there is only one aft tube). Generally, I try to rid myself of all-bar-one aft torpedo one minor targets on the way to the patrol zone, before taking on the major target (convoy, harbour, etc.). And then, if I still have any aft torpedoes, I try and loose them off at some small freighter on the way home. Having two aft tubes would be a major bonus (which is another reason why I can't wait to get my Traum-U-Boot: a IX-C), as I'd then be able to take on larger targets with the aft tubes. Generally, I find that it takes too much time to turn about while submerged, which means it is difficult to use both fore and aft tubes on the one target (unless they are dead in the water - which occasionally happens).

For a convoy attack i like to position near the middle, so i can fire my fore/aft torpedos at the same time.

If i'm doing a side on attack, after firing my fore torpedos i turn hard so to let loose my rear fish.

This is pretty cool. Its good to see ships fore and aft going up at the same time. Being in the middle of the convoy makes it harder for the DD's to get to you as they are dodging all their own merchies.

I like to use the aft torps in convoy attacks and maybe on the way back to base. I hate to dock and have to explain why I returned w/ torps still on board..... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

I find it more fun to attack w/ forward and aft tubes from the middle of a convoy. If the ship hit w/ the aft does not sink it can be used as a hat to hid under and let the escorts run in circles looking for me. Can use the time to reload or quit and hide. Using Electric torps and it makes it even harder for them to tell where I was when I fired. Ships start blowing up all over the convoy. Its fun....
