Whatcha reckon? We're flogging a dead horse here. Should I spend 2k on a new computer in a show of lost faith?

Try to talk me out of it please. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif

Why not? You're bound to be upgrading again at some point anyway...

Apparently SoW will not be done this year either, so why upgrade? What game do you play?

Upgrade for one reason only, since Oleg is bound to IL-2's code forever it seems---KOTS. You know you love the fabric era more than aluminum anyway!

Ill be able to mod FSX into a combat flight sim before Storm of War ever gets released

Nahhh I bet it gets released in 2008, although the lack of updates is a little worrying.

I'm about to upgrade too. I've held out for quite a while, but there are other games I want to play and my current system just won't cut it anymore. You can never be ahead when it comes to computer hardware anyway so you may as well get on with it. Don't think I'll upgrade to Vista though. I'm with leitmotiv on KOTS! Really looking forward to this one.

If you know you won`t be able to afford a next one in the next 1,5 years then get a slight upgrade just to be able to play other games with good detail.I can`t believe the situation but it certainly looks that SOW is still way ahead, maybe even Christmas 2008.

If you gots old hardware, it`s a good moment to upgrade anyway.Lots of good games out there you`re not being able to enjoy I wager.

In my case, I`m upgrading just for SOW, so it won`t be until May 2008.

I'd go for it. Core2/DDR2 prices are good right now, and hard drive prices are plummeting by the week.

If you build a fairly stout rig right now (i.e. decent core2duo and sli capable), you'll still be in good shape for whatever may come out in the next year or so easily. You'll also have an excelent upgrade path for quad core and higher-end video cards.

I built one about 6 months ago when everyone was saying wait and my rig is a screamer...and I've had it for over 6 months. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

SOW is not dead. Do not upgrade. If you must go heavy on the RAM, ram is what counts.

I find it encouraging that they are spending their time building the sim rather than answering the same questions 400 times. I think they are just busy, that's all.

And I would far rather wait until it's finished and works properly than have a still born mutation like MS CFS2 that was never finished and never worked right.

I also discovered to my chagrin that my P4 3.06 won't play "battlestations Midway", so I don't get to play with all those neat ships. Grrr.Gonna wait a yr until I upgrade, as I have upgraded my current computer as far as I can with the fastest card I could fit and a bunch of RAM etc.

If you can get 25 or better frames in 46 as it is now on an average then Id wait. SoW may not be out this year... but it will be out eventually... it is far from dead.... and if you can run this sim decently unless you have other apps that are not being fed... I'd wait. If you have the money burning a hole in your pocket then stick it in a 6 month CD. In 6 months it wikll be worth more and PC prices will have dropped for the current top end stuff. Thats just me though.. and I rarely have money burning a hole in my pocket.

Less than $500 will get one a cpu, mobo, & 2GB of memory. Use the rest of what you already have & you have an upgrade worth every penny. Then resale what you are replacing & recoup a little of that $500.

Do your bit for the planet! Don't get caught in 'I gota upgrade every one else is.' mentality. Thats how the hardware companies take your money off you!

If your rig is going ok now, leave it alone, if not work out what you need!

My Systems a dinosaur by most standards (Athlon 2400XP) but a cheap upgrade of a graphics card is going to tide me over till BoB!

By then I'll NEED an upgrade. My current PC will shuffle down to one of my step daughters and her home work computer will get donated to a charity.

I'ld almost convinced myself to by a slick widescreen LCD, even had started getting prices, until this week. Our local council is having a rubbish collection day next week. as I came home from work I 'found' a ADI 19 inch CRT, in perfect condition lying on the side of the road. It's better than my bought one!

I've now got a dual monitor setup and saved myself $300, kept 7lb's of lead going into land fill and the world is smiling on me!
Its as almost though Gia wan'ts me to go into a simulated world and blow away virtual nazi's to save the planet!

Like most of you here, I was waiting eagerly for SoW when Ubi announced it would be released at the end of 2006. But after seeing plenty of trailers of Call of Duty 4 (Oleg should really learn form CoD4's promotion activity), it has become my most wanted game now. I think I will upgrade my rig for it after it is released. And I have been looking forward to flying FW190 in FSX for a long time. Even if SoW will be released at this Christmas, I won't have to many interests on playing it, because there are only a few planes to choose. I'll wait untill FW190 shows up.

I've got a 2.4ghz AGP system with 1gb of Ram and a 6800GT card.

I was thinking of going for a quad-core system with an SLI ready board and a 8800GT card. Plus 2gb of DDR2, with a view to getting a second 8800 in a year or so.

I don't really play any other games. I try to, but they never really hold my interest for very long. I'd like to get FSX and have MAW running sweetly, but it isn't very stable on this machine (I blame my crappy motherboard). It seems like there is more circumstantial evidence to suggest the demise of SoW than there is to encourage the notion that it will be released any time in the next 12 months. If at all. Oleg said himself (on the film interview that MysticPuma made) that BoB had to meet it's November 07 deadline. Who amongst us still thinks that it will? How can Maddox Games afford to keep it's doors open if it runs overtime?

Oleg, if you are reading this; now is the time to say something http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/halo.gif

I approve of this post. I'm sure we do not delay the frantic development of SoW by asking him to type a word or two in HIS forum. The lack of updates can mean many things, and none of them is any good http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

It has been suggested that Oleg has a gagging order from UBI re:SoW.
Maybe someone from ubi could give us a morsel then?
F1V, why bother waiting for something that might never happen? If you are in a position to upgrade, then go for it.

shuss..maybe we can just put a relevent time frame camo skin and squadron markings on it and call it a 109 like the skinners do with all the ww1 planes.. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Hay it's a radial engine version of the 109! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Heck, the luftwaffe really needed a long range plane then. I vote for the Zero in luftwaffe markings! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif

I recycle my hardware by making up rigs for my friends and clients. Older gaming kit makes great house comps, file servers and such. Taking the old Maxtor 40Gb series and converting from Raid0 to single use; there's many a good tune played on an old fiddle, as it's said. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

That 'old' Athlon 2400XP may hold you back from the full glory that's still to be found in FB - but it's quite capable of running a server.

With recycling looked after, well, each man or woman's money is their own business. If it's not too scarce then there are routes to upgrade by if you catch the right wave. I'm still on a 939-pin, AGP, DDR1 rig; but I've had a lot of fun up-grading it, it's my other hobby! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif It's now water-cooled, dual-cored and running average in the high forties, fps, and I love it http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/inlove.gif

I know I could be having an even richer experience if I upgraded, with more frames and yadda yadda.... but I've always preferred to keep away from bleeding-edge tech at vastly-inflated prices. I prefer to push what I have until it's at its best....and then settle down to enjoy it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

There is one problem with going for an SLI motherboard and upgrading to the second highend gpu at a later date. It usually very difficult to find the same gpu a year later. Hopefully SLI will accept gpus that are not exactly the same at some point in its developement.

Its interesting reading posts with the intention of weeding some information about BOB. Unfortunately none have been successfull so far. My favorite is...Its Vapourware...hoping Oleg will run in here and say "You is wrong" and heres the proof. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Just upgrade already. The game is going to have good graphics, but it's not like you're gonna have to upgrade again if you're running on a 6 month old system.

I think I've spent something like 27 years whishing "if only I'ld have a faster PC"

Now were lucky these days that the speeds of even mediocre PC's are enough to do 99% of the things you want to do.

Unless you want to play hardcore flight sims - that is! Thats the 1% that gives you that sick feeling in your gut that you need to upgrade.

Moores law tells us that prices drop by half every 18 or so months and the performance of technology doubles in the same time. ( a very liberal interpretation of his actual statements but it still holds true!)

Yes you will be able to run BoB in six months time. What it will perform like is anyones guess. It hasn't been completed yet. Not even the developers can tell us exactly.

Upgrade if you have to! But look at the advantages of waiting if you can do so.

1) Cost of hardware will decrease in 6 months time.
2) The Hardware you will buy will go through refinement. You will have access to revised versions of your Motherboard, Graphics cards etc.
3) DirectX 10 Graphics cards have not been tested with DirectX 10 games to test be able to do a real world performance comparison between cards.
4) New Products will be released with greater feature sets and performance.
5) you might win lotto before Bob's released and then you can send me a new PC! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif (I'll give you a performance apraisal! so you won't have waste your time if it's sub-standard!)
