These are some screenshots I took from the FPS game Pacific Assault, specifically from the part where you take an SBD and attack an airfield on an island, and in the end have to sink a carrier. I had to use a mouse and keyboard for flying - I couldn't wait to get back on the ground again, even if on the beach of Tarawa! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

First I got the tail gunner's job, shooting down an incredible amount of Zeros (probably more than all SBD rear gunners in the real war combined http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif). Then the pilot bailed out (everything is scripted, of course) and I had to crawl across the canopy http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif to take his seat...

The Island, after my attack. Radio tower destroyed (with a single burst of my machine guns, mind you) and also some bombers on the ground (also with MGs).

Finally, there's the carrier. Wait, that's not ours..? Attack! (Hey, I suddenly have bombs and a torpedo!)

http://img72.exs.cx/img72/4788/mohpa0962ww.th.jpg (http://img72.exs.cx/img72/4788/mohpa0962ww.jpg)
I better clear that flight deck before those fighters take off and start to chase me. Meanwhile my SBD buddies are dogfighting the Zeros, and quite successfully I might add. The trick for sinking the carrier was to take out the six AAA positions - I sunk the carrier with guns only! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif There was a cruiser next to it, I spent a few bombs on it and it sank easily.

Mission accomplished - finally! Don't be fooled, this took many tries and reloads. Very frustrating. After this I was ready for a real flight sim again, maybe more difficult (on the more realistic settings) but more rewarding as well. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Anyway, fun. Or not? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yeah, I've got MoH:PA too.

And no, that part was no fun at all, at least not until I got used to the controls, but by then it was over. Though I never figured out how to drop any bombs, but I was told that my SBD was carrying both bombs AND torpedoes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif.

It was fun to have it behind me, at least. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I had to browse through several forums to find out what the keys were for dropping your bombs, and how to beat the flight sequence; and then I had to execute it perfectly in the right order. After you sink both ships you have to fly the right course towards your own carrier, but you don't get a clue as to the right direction! I followed the rest of the squadron but "ran out of fuel"; once I had figured out (after much frustration) I had to ignore them and just turn left, I could finally finish that part of the game. The ground combat is hard too, but at least most of it makes sense. The flying part did not. Flying in PF after this was a relief! Of course I was shot down (I was just riding in the back of an SBD), but I felt much better about how it happened. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I read somewhere on a very popular internet gaming site that the SBD portion of Pacific Assault was ludicrous, and your story pretty much confirms it...

Pretty funny. I hope EA never manages to buy out UbiSoft. Imagine Oleg under pressure to include lasers and guided missles in all aircraft.

I remember seeing some lower budject pacific fighters type game...
With Hellcats sporting D-day schemes fighting the Japanese planes http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Heh heh, if you think PA was bad with the whole 'superhero' innacuracies, you should have seen the MoH: Rising Sun game - the 'version' of PA for the gamecube/playstation2.

You get to spend Pearl Harbour as a gunner on one of the cruisers, and in the process shoot down over fifty zeros (that fly low and slow, for some reason) singlehandedly. Funny when the Japanese lost, what, under 20 planes in the attack? (and most of those Vals).

Eventually your ship gets sunk (what? The Yanks lost ships at Pearl harbour? Never!), and you bail out where you get picked up in a zodiac dinghy type thing, mounted with a 7.5cal (I think) machine gun. So you shoot down another 10 or so zekes before you beach.

Later on you singlehandedly (oh wait, you have 2 team-mates) kill the entire IJA population of Burma, and in that level you shoot down up to 3 zekes with your trusty Thompson sub-machine gun, as they fly overhead.

I mean, I know the Zeke wasn't the hardiest of aircraft, but there's a limit to anyone's credibility, eh?

I wasn't crazy about the MOH:PA SBD missions either, although the strafing of the island base was kind of fun. The carrier bit gave me some troubles, not because of the bombs or torpedos (I had that figured out right away) but because I didn't know I was supposed to take out the AAA positions. I kept bombing the flight deck and destroying all the fighters on deck while getting creamed by flak ... but confused as to why I couldn't eliminate the carrier from my objectives.

I didn't see the AAA positions on the carrier at first because there was some kind of bug with my vid card (I guess) where half the carrier was invisible. The gunners were sort of floating next to the carrier, and I ended up strafing them out of frustration just to end the flak that kept killing me.

This part was in MOHPA (as it's commonly abbreviated) as well. My total score in Pearl Harbor was 46. In reality they lost 29. Well, it's a Medal of Honor game, not a sim...
