View Full Version : Randomisation for IL2: Fog of War [ video link ]

Hi!

If you build missions, you're probably 'haunted' by the fact that when you fly them, you know where everything is in your missions and how many there are.

An upcoming utility, Fog of War, will enable mission builders to incorporate randomisation into their missions really, REALLY easily.

http://www.il2-fullmissionbuilder.com/images/fogofwar/blog-example-1/fowmain.jpg

If you're interested in the idea, check out an example I've posted at my new...
Fog of War blog (http://www.il2-fullmissionbuilder.com/fogofwar/).

That's all I have time for now.

Now we can fly virtual air combat missions in the traditions of our ancestors. You have our gratitude http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Can travelling tank etc. columns be randomised into a staggered line or does this only work on static objects ?<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Thanks for your hard work.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

"Why, of course, the people don't want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece? Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along. The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." - Hermann Goering, April 1946

Well, by looking at the GUI, I could see how you could use that with UQMG, for example. You create your mission, then point the Random generator to the UQMG mission directory, now you run it, and then your UQMG missions has the parameters you designed plus whatever changes the Random generator creates... this is seems like pure genius... I can't wait to try it when it comes out.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The thing about DCG and DGen however, is that they already have the Random generation as a part of their engines (For example, start the same campaign in each... you will notice that the missions are not really exactly alike.). This is much more useful for static campaigns and for single missions, on my opinion... unless of course, you want to add a random layer above the randomness of DCG or DGEN, or NGen for that matter.

The static campaign "engine" in IL-2 adds some randomness on the way of "OK, you can have several choices for the next mission", but it will be that already created mission. By that I mean, say your campaign has 10 missions total... well you could make it so that for each missions you have 5 choices of mission... you would then have to create 50 misisons from scratch, and although the sequence of missions would be different each time... if you played the same campaign say, 30 times, you would start recognizing the same missions... I hope I make sence...

Now... say you ran the randomizer before each mission... that means that each mission would definitely be somewhat different, even in a static campaign... it is very nice, because even if you designed the campaign, it would not be the same as you designed.

And for the example I gave with the "semi-random" static scenario, the randomness would be even greater...

Yeah, very neat idea for a program. Like I said, cant wait to try it.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Rgr that... I think the UQMG was one of the most asked for but never delivered changes from 1C. Not to detract from 1C at all mind you, but it is one of my all time favorite usermade utes for the sim. For me between you and Crazy Schmidt..... I really dont use either of the mission builders too much anymore since my time is so limited now for the FMB and who needs the QMB when I have the UQMG & MM?.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Bearcat, I think you under-estimate the power of the IL2 force!

Seriously, look at the following EAW still has. Even with BoB, I can see IL2 lasting 5-10 years at least. I mean with all the add-ons, missions, skins, Uberdemon software, Mat Manager, etc, etc, the game can last for years and years.

Also with PC upgrades in the future IL2 will run smoother and smoother and not forgetting too that BoB will initially have no US aircraft (my favourite saddle) for the first year of release at least.

Yes I know BoB has better graphics and flight model, but without the '47 and '38, I will, in fairness, buy BoB, but online I will be taking my American planes into the skies of IL2.

As for this programme, looks like another worthy addition coming for Bearcats 'Sturmovik Essentials', cheers, MP.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

It'll be interesting to see what DF servers can do with it. Imaging if a DF server could load up the "same ole" mission, and all the vehicles, ships, static planes at airfields were different each time. Would make a lot of the "THAT map, AGAIN?" go away...

Regardless, can be fun for offline as well.

Very very cool, indeed.

Let's say the BoB comes out around January of 2008. It could be a full 4-5 years after that before we have the variety of maps and aircraft we have at this point in IL-2.

Not I. Too crude. Decent internment time ASAP. Lack of 6 DOF (and being able to have it in Shockwave's B OF BRIT, FS9/X, KNIGHTS OF THE SKY, and, of course, the Maddox BOB) is the deal breaker for me. Utterly predictable AI another demerit. I'm sure the online people will keep it going for long after its time is over, but online is the realm of gaming, not sim-ing.

Hi,

It should indeed be as cool as you all think. I'd hate to have to fly unrandomised missions again. It'd be like flying without TrackIR. Imagine that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

Public Beta in February I think, private Beta testing is going on now. Only static objects for now, but even that is way cool. Time & Weather will be in too.

The next example will show fully what the user needs to do make it all work. Monkey easy, I promise. Should be this weekend.

First off it has been ready... secondly it is in the sim... under Full Mission Builder...

Secondly... I would advise that you consider Nutcas's guide... and also learn the sim first. It isnt a point and shoot FMB.... it is a little complixcated at first but it gets easier with use...

Thirdly... if you are doing a PFcampaign there may not be too many folks to fly it... most of us re merged to 4.07 or .071.. soon to be .08 I think... and those who arent soon will be.

I thank you for the explanation, Bearcat. I've sure not been clear enough, but English is not my mother's language and it's not so easy to manage it somtimes...

Don't worry, I'm not a nooby in that gaming world. I've been playing it since 3 years.
What I try to do here is to get some informations in order to enhance the way of playing with IL2. I'm helped in that project by a lot of friends from several active squads (because most people like the game but are bored with the mission generators in usual online campaigns).
So I'm studying what have been done before, just to avoid to redo the same...

For information, I first need to know what are the formats of several types of included files of the game, in order to determinate the limits of what I can get from them. If you know someone ready to help me, just let me know.

You should all know the Big Picture. I've also started an FAQ page and a version information page (incl. pics) which you might find of interest.

The Big Picture is here:

The text formatting on these pages is a bit screwed up - what's up with WordPress? No time to fiddle with that just now. Hi Rickster and all,

Yes FOW will work with any mission or campaign, but will usually require that extra objects are placed for each group of objects, so you can have a random effect. You'd want to SaveAs first then...

For example you have a previously made mission - whether your own or someone else's, from Fall Blau or where ever - which has 3 IL-2's at an airfield. Place IL2's in all the possible positions, probably in the same area of the airfield, but possibly scattered in different areas of the field.

Do this for all the various groups in the mission - groups of static aircraft, ships etc.

In FOW, set a Min/Max etc for each group you want randomised and set the Properties (Facing, Sleep, Skill etc as applicable).

Hit Randomise and "BAM" - a random mission (or campaign) that has basically infinite replayability because...

...if you want to play it ten times, make 10 randomised missions.

And if you're randomising a campaign, select say 20 copies per mission (in affect 20 entries per line in the campaign.ini) and after dying in a campaign, even replayng the same mission will result in a 'different' mission - a different randomised version of that campaign mission. Actually, to do this you need to exit the campaign then return. Hitting Refly will load the exact same mission.

I hope that's clear. If it's not, wait for a screenie or video example *coming soon* (as usual) and you'll see how easy it is.

There's a slight proviso to what I mentioned above about turning a static mission into a randomised one, but I don't want to add too much at once. It's all highly doable and the effect is veeeeeery much worth the effort . A video example will be much better.

Randomised Time & Weather is up and running + generating Player Targets, e.g. Recon which allows for realistic Search & Rescue missions - yep, in missions you've made yourself. Way cool. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/partyhat.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

I haven't gotten around to making a second example, so I'll post the Beta 2 Beta Testers vid instead. It's bit long - almost 200MB, and runs for 25 mins. It's an unrehearsed vid made quickly to get out, but that's how things get done, so don't analyse every word too closely. Also, some things have changed, like having textual Skill, e.g. "Rookie" rather than "0". The lists are all raw FMB lists for now.

The link is here:
How Fog of War works - a video (http://www.il2-fullmissionbuilder.com/fow/dl/fow-intro340.avi)
It's probably best to download it with the 'Save to Disk' option. It took me nine minutes to download it, with broadband.

You'll probably need to download this codec to view it:
TechSmith Screen Capture Codec (TSCC) (http://www.techsmith.com/download/codecs.asp)

Hi Ibis, Bearcat,

Kind of tragically, all the important functionality has been working since February. Anyway, after a long break , it's back on the *front*-burner.

I'm going back to NZ for a months holiday, but my laptop will be with me and I'll try to finish it off there.

It's nice to know there's still a bit of interest. Apologies for the loooong delay. The feedback from the beta testers has been rather generous. Quote from a beta a tester, replying to my query about whether he had been randomizing time and weather:

"This program is totally amazing. I have been fiddling about with it
just about every day. And Yes, I do make extensive use of the random
time and weather. This feature alone makes a mission/campaign come
alive. The one mission I mentioned before, that I fly as a "warm up"
flight has taken on a totally new dimension... it is now a almost
totally random single mission campaign! Weather can now range from Great
to Garbage! And you never know what time of day you will fly either, I
set it to a 12 hour span! LOL!! Where will those fuel trucks be? Oh,
**** they have barrage balloons up tonight!"

To quote Bearcat re peropherals and stuff: "Immersion Baby".

Will be in touch.

BTW Bearcat, the new address is:

I gotta say I'm a big fan of quick single missions that incorporate specific mission characteristics, and it would be really cool to add a randomization factor to these missions...

LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS!!!! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif
