I am just wondering. Wasn't a bad flight sims at its times beside the fact that there weren't many planes in the air at the same time and the airspace felt somewhat squeezed making vertical maneuvers more difficult than they should be but the graphics were great and it had (or perhaps still has) a good community and ground attacks were just great in this game.

Will fire it up over the Christmas holidays just to get the feeling of "old school" flight sims.

Anyone else still having it installed and flying it from time to time?

If the AI was better, the flight and damage modeling weren't so lousy it would still be a contender.

The Mission Builder is second to none, and the graphics aren't half bad for a 6+ yrs old CFS.

I've still got it on my WInXP drive. After the IL2 modeling and AI "the dog just won't hunt".

Is it still playable with XP and SP2?

If so I think it's time to fire it up again and install all the mods. At least it's still playable on HyperLobby for MP.

Yeah, Janes WWII Fighters was a great game for the 'time'. And it still is not a bad game. Although, i can't run it because it doesnt support Windows XP. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Diehard,
I have run WWII Fighters on XP quite a bit. No problems here, mate, except some graphic driver issues with the in-game text, and it is still readable.

I've got it installed on mine but I never mess with it. The mission builder never worked right, never was able to work with the properties thing and the text in the mission briefs were all fouled up.

I've heard that SP2 for XP kills WWII Fighters. I run it just fine with SP1 however.

If you haven't found the community site yet, go to ww2fighters.org (http://www.ww2fighters.org/). I heartily recommend Rammjager's P-51D(v2) and Spitfire XIV, and Hammerd's FW-190A-8, Bf-109K, and P-47D/M. Those mods alone improve the visuals of the basic game 1000%.

One issue we've found is that if you're using an Nvidia graphics card, the older MX series causes 'tearing' of the horizon and with the GeForce Ti series you can't use drivers more recent than 4x.xx (I can't remember the number exactly -- 42.70?). There are threads at the board on this.

As said, the mission builder is second to none because you can create 'triggers.' Gameplay is fun but compared to IL-2 is undeniably arcadish. Admittedly, my favorite feature is the picture-in-picture target view ... it just makes ground attack soooo sweeeeeet! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It was the first game where you could hunt deer, long before the fad.

Yea, it was way ahead of it's time. Still very nice to look at and I really enjoyed starting the engine and being able to taxi into position. The great "swing" music added real atmosphere. Too bad Jane's didn't continue the series.

I loved WWII fighters. One of the coolest looking WWII flight sims. The flight model was pretty good to up to the point where you should be going into a spin. It would stall, and flip over maybe, but then they self recovered.
It was really cool looking too using 3d glasses.
The campaign was weird though jumping from one kind of plane to another without any continuity between missions. It did have somewhat of an arcadish atmosphere, but it also had a good WWII era atmoshphere with the music. I always felt that it could have been tweaked into a really great sim.

It will run just fine on XP SP1 or SP2. If not then just set its properties to run under Win 98 emulation. With all the beautiful skins by Hammerd and others, they put new life in it. Truly a classic sim.

I fired it up a couple weeks ago and it ran like the wind all the settings including realism up to maxxx. Bring back some good memories. Probably the best flight sim on the market even today besides maybe EAW, CFS2 and the IL2 series of course.

still run it from time to time. Loads and loads up updates from idividuals that makes the game much diff. than out of the box. Although I have to say my video card is not liking it, some wild effects.
