RAF Leuchars airshow, Saturday 13th September, a short report:

Weather was dismal - low cloud, drizzle, very poor visibility. As a result not much got to fly, and what did was restricted to low-level passes. No BoB Memorial Flight (again), Vulcan was only allowed to do a mock take-off down the runway. At one point an AWACS which was in the 'neighbourhood' was persuaded to do a touch and go for the rather despondant crowd - it was quite a spectacle to see the huge AWACS loom suddenly out of the grey blanket in front of our eyes, streaming rain and water vapour from wings and fuselage, then touch down and off again into the gloom. The 'Role Demonstration' by a pair of Tornado GR4s, while also severly limited by the weather, was enthralling - they did some terrific low-level mock bomb/strafing runs past the crowd, full afterburner and wings swept back, whilst some large pyrotechnics were set off. The Red Arrows finally got airborne but again they could only put on a very limited display. The weather finally began to get better about 3.30pm, but by then a lot of the aircraft had departed or were stood-down. All in all, we were lucky to see what we did but very disappointing considering the great line up (http://www.airshow.co.uk/public/flying). Bloody Scottish weather!

Nice pics, but it looks like a XIV to me, rather than a XIX (recce). http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Thanks for posting those pictures Schwarz.13. I attended an airshow at Leuchars back in the late 1950's when they had Sea Furies stationed there.

Don't remember a lot about it other than the weather was considerably better than the day shown here.

Fixed! (thanks) http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blush.gif I was thinking about the Rolls-Royce Heritage Mk. XIX which was also supposed to be flying http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

The Spit flew around 4.15pm after the weather finally cleared up somewhat - it was bloody awful earlier...

Is it just the effect of taking a picture of the high speed rotating prop, or does that spitfire have more blades on the prop?

Beautiful Spit Schwarz 13. And once again excellent Pics. Taken in far from ideal Scottish weather!

"Stingray" The MkXIV has a 5 blade prop.

Well... looks like it has five blades... as it should (being Griffon-powered version!).

Schwarz13: Sorry to read that the weather was poor. You Scottsmen are not alone with this problem. Here, in this part of the Europe, 3 weeks ago I was walkin' in the sun, wearing T-shirt and enjoying summer. Now in order not to get my a$$ frozen I have to wear a sweater and a jacket. Bang! Looks like we've got premature late-autumn now, just like that! Gotta love the world climate nowadays...

Cheers - Art

Great pics thanks http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Why didn't we get the Spit Mk XIV in il2?

There was a reason but I can't remember it.

Best Regards,
