Wow amazing to see these ships next to common day things , they seem so much bigger than when you see them alone http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Great pictures. What kind of aircraft was the Graf Zeppelin supposed to carry? Seems a very short flight deck, and oddly very high in the water, wouldn't have wanted to go to sea in the North Atlantic in it.

Given the weak undercarriage and poor configuration of the 109 I would think that it would be a poor choice. My money would be on the FW190

Very good photos. It would have been interesting to see if she would have made a difference if finally launched. Probably too late. Those string bags would have never gotten close to the Bismark if the Graf Zeppelin had been on station with her and the Prince Eugen. Oh....I guess the German ships were actually referred to as he, not she. Celeon, am I correct on that?

Still, a nice looking design. With all that artillery, I guess old Adolph wanted her to be a pocket battleship/cruiser/aircraft carrier.

Nope. She

Ships with names are female in german.

To the airplanes : The Graf Zeppelin was built after rather outdated carrier design doctrines.

She was supposed to carry only about half as many planes as comparable american and japanese carriers.

The reason for that are the big artillery guns and their heavily amoured ammo stores. They took away all the space that could had been used for more planes.

As the Graf Zeppelin was designed ,Japan and the USA had already abolished this design and went on to carriers which were fully dependant on a strong escort for their protection.

They moved on to a more modern design and traded possible artillery guns with a higher amount of AA guns and space for as much airplanes as possible.

Here is a model of the Graf Zeppelin also showing the planned Kriegsmarine-Version of the Ju-87 with folding wings. The folding wings of the japanese Zeke fighter were taken as role model for them.

There was second carrier named "Flugzeugträger B" (Aircraft carrier B as no name was chosen yet) in production but it was cancelled in a very early production state and scrapped afterwards.

I think there is one exception... the Bismarck. Captain Lindemann declared that such a powerful ship should not be referred to as "She" but as "He".

Excellent work Celeon! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/10.gif I think VG may be correct about Bismarck being referred to in the masculine tense.

Heinrich505

RJ and VG,
I'd read that too, and got the mistaken idea that it applied to all ships. Hence the question.

After the finding was confirmed the german government declared that the Russian Federation as successor state of the Soviet Union , is the current owner of the Graf Zeppelin.

Just in case someone should declare the wreck to be an enviromental hazard. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Old thread resurrected

For good reasons.

The german federal archives have recently donated over 100.000 historical photos to wikipedia.

Among them are several photos from ww1 and ww2. Many of them have never been published before as they came from private archives http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Im still digging through them (they dont seem to be sorted yet) but ive already found some good ones.

Celeon,
Some amazing photos. You are absolutely right, most have not been published. I only saw one or two I'd seen before. Really slick post, or should I say re-post. Thanks for resurrecting this one.

The shot of Field Marshall Rommell pushing the stuck vehicle was really neat, and completely in character.

Oh yeah, subtle babe attack included. Nicely done.....I don't think anyone noticed, muhahaha.

Here are some pics that caught my eye

Foehammer knows what this is http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

- First we built the generators for it

- Then the soviets blew it up when we came and flooded dozens of square kilometers

- So we repaired it and got it running again

- And when the soviets came back we blew it up and flooded dozens of square kilometers......for a second time http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

- Then the soviets repaired it http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

It does look like a Lightning but, given its source, I'd say that it's a photo of the similar shaped FW-189 (which apparently first flew a year before the P-38)
