Ok, I'm purchasing a head set and have teamspeak downloaded but haven't tried it yet. I read somewhere here that there are online groups where learners like me can join and get some tuition and advice from more experienced flyers. I'd appreciate somewhere to fly online where I can learn in a more systematic way not just fly around trying to hit someone. Any groups I could join specifically for training?

I was also wondering about this question... is a headset a "must have"? I don't have one, what do they plug into? How cheap are they?.

Quite a few years ago, I flew a few times online at the UBI site (I think) and I didn't have one then. I "think" we typed in messages? Been so long ago now.

I quit trying to fly online due to us having dialup, and also, our computer at the time was really slow and always lagged.

A headset isnt required but it helps.

You plug it into a usb slot normally and use a program like ventrilo or TS to communicate with others.

Some headsets just plug into your soundcard like headphones with a microphone plug. I prefer USB so I can have coms on the headset and game sound on the speakers. If you don't have the money to get a headset but have a pait of headphones then just run down to the local flea market, there's always that one guy with all the really old computer parts and he always has a box full of those old gateway or dell boom mics on a stand selling for like a buck, lol.

Deskpilot, come and join us on the Ubizoo coops of a Saturday night.

Check out the thread here or at the top of Off topic. Always a good laugh and you'll get the chance shoot down Urufu_Shijiro http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

If you can fly this sim offline you'll have no problem with coops. Got a headset? Fantastic. Come and join the fun with plenty of nice people to talk you through it.

Deskpilot. If you need any help setting up Teamspeak I can send you a How To Document I wrote, which is in layman's language. I could also arrange to meet with you on TS to make sure you can hear and talk with others.

Lol, hopefully, as I'm getting fed up with running 'Dads saturday night taxi service' for the kids. If one of them dont pass his driving test soon I'm selling 'em off for medical experiments http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Thanks alot, guys. The Saturday coops sound good as does the flying school. I'm getting a head set tommorrow and may well need your help, blairgowrie to set teamspeak up. I'm looking forward to actually talking to folk. I love this sim and although after a few months of practising I'm still pretty rubbish, I'm determined to improve. Arthursmedley, I'm totally with you on the " dads taxi service" situation. See you online in the not too distant future.

Joint Ops would be great for you Deskpilot, but maybe at some time in the future. I took Basic Flight School at JO after 2 years of flying il2 and still found it very tough going.

As soon as you are comfortable taking off and landing 90% of the time, then you might be ready for JO. When I went through the course there were several washouts; not because JO washed them out. The guys just became discouraged and washed themselves out.

Online is "where it's at".

It's a more high-brow version of cybercrack and once you dive in, you'll never get out of the water.

COme on in...the water's fine.

When you get your headset and Hyperlobby account set, I would be more than happy to give you a few hours of time getting you up to speed on Spits vs. 109s, or Zekes vs. Wildcats servers. The planesets and missions are historical, featuring a variety of appropriate aircraft while maintaining a good balance. The pilots themselves tend to be proffesional and mature and are on average the best sticks in the game. The full real learning curve is a bit steep, however judging by the material you post I think you'll do fine and have a more rewarding challenge playing with the big kids.
I fly online as TS_Sancho so just look for my tag in the hyperlobby chat.I'm usually on around 5:00 or 6:00 pm PST.

I just took the plunge myself about 3 weeks ago.
I fly at spits vs 109s and i am getting my butt kicked every nite but i am learning also.
It takes awhile to learn the maps and figure out where the action. Dont be discouraged by your first experiences online it really is a test of ones fortitude, it is very humbling for myself.
I fly as norton74 so maybe i will see you out there.

Yeah and I'll bet you sound like The Master Cylinder to your TS mates....... http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

DP... get a USB headset... that way you can have comms going through your headset and the sim through your speakers.. TS will see a USB headset as a seperate sound source.....
